ยฃ1500 CASH FOR YOU S&S OR NOLA, by snausages on Jan 28, 2009 22:41:49 GMT 1, For what its worth I agree with the negative posts. You can now (if you're lucky) buy signed limited Banksy's for $2000 and people are STILL negative! People act as if they're doing you a favor by taking your signed Banksy off your hand for $2000 because of course we all know they'll be worth nothing in a few more years. Right? Wrong.
I used to be negative, ...way back when Stop & Search was selling for $6000 to 8000!!! I warned people way back then but got a lot of criticism for it.
It already has been reflected in the market. Grin Reaper, J&J used to sell for $10000 easy on ebay, and probably have auction records of about $20000. You can now buy them for about $4000. I think the 'a lot worse' has pretty much hit.
I have been looking to buy Nick Walker over the last month or so and am now being offered canvasses LOWER than cost ? Yeah but that's because it's Nick Walker. I don't want to disrespect him or people who like him but his price rise was absurd and based on a fluke of an auction sale that was riding the tide set by Banksy and others. He has his following but he will never be fractionally close to what Banksy is in critical terms or worldwide following. The people who have something to worry about aren't the people buying a S&S for $2000 it's the person who bought an editioned Walker canvas for ยฃ45000 last year. Worst mistake ever.
Someone said the recession started last year, it actually started in 2007 they're now saying. And I don't expect things to bounce back anytime soon but I think the decline has already happened, we just didn't "see it" till now and imo we're pretty much going to be scraping along the bottom this year as things work themselves out.
I can understand apprehension about spending 2 grand even in good times but when everything has turned around and people are once again happy and self assured and feel ok with spending money on such frivolous things as art prints I'm sure these prices will be long long gone.

ยฃ1500 CASH FOR YOU S&S OR NOLA, by arcam on Jan 28, 2009 23:07:14 GMT 1, As strange as it sounds as a result of the recession many people are better off as the cost of living has gone down. The confidence is just lacking to spend.

Except for the millions who have lost their jobs (at least in the US). For everyone else you may be right but I think while prices are down due to deflation, stress and worry more than compensate.
As for Banksy prices, every month or two for the last year there is a thread where .info economists try to call the bottom, someone says "you won't see x or y go below z, then a few months later it does and the whole process starts over at a lower price. Remember when Nola came out? Many people said it would not go below GBP 2000 due to edition size. Now the discussion is GBP 1500! In a few months it will probably be 1200 or 1000 for some signed prints. I hate to say it but I think many people here are still in denial.

ยฃ1500 CASH FOR YOU S&S OR NOLA, by snausages on Jan 29, 2009 1:07:03 GMT 1, ^ I'm not stupid enough to call a bottom. But I am smart enough to know value when I see it.
It's just that I'm amazed by human psychology. When everything was gung ho everyone jumped on the bandwagon, were happy to pay ridiculously high prices and blindly walked off the cliff with everyone else. Now that things soured everyone is doing the exact opposite. They're psychologically crippled and jumping on the downer bandwagon. We've come a full 360 for sure.
Personally I like to think different. Arcam is right, the economy breaking down is a positive in a lot of ways. It's weeding out the crap businesses. It's weeding out speculation. Housing and energy costs are in decline. And you can now get about 4 times the amount of stock for your retirement than the same mount of money could buy a year ago. That's good. Those who can now hunker down, thrive, survive and start up in this weak environment will be very well positioned once we emerge from all this.
