How do you view unsigned vs signed works?, by sashaz on Jan 28, 2009 19:14:18 GMT 1, Looking at the various issues and the main one being cost. Does the signature justify the extra cost of the print to you?
I ask because when I first started looking for art I said I would only buy signed peices but I see so many insigned peices at good prices. Am I missing out?

How do you view unsigned vs signed works?, by maadbeats on Jan 28, 2009 19:27:33 GMT 1, I think its pointless to buy a print without a sig. Matter fact, it pointless to print them. Unless it a basic poster your going to put tacks through the corners
I'll wait for a bashing

How do you view unsigned vs signed works?, by rillo on Jan 28, 2009 19:28:25 GMT 1, I took the line of only buying signed and only at cost. This was back when signed Banksys hung around on POW for several days. When the releases became more frantic I dropped my guard and snapped a few unsigned Bs as they where only option available and loved the image. I am happy to have my unsigned prints on the wall for the image but they don't compare to the signed ones I have. To me, the signature justified the extra cost (75 quid extra for some).

Many 'orginal' works aren't signed at all and I've seen a lot of artists display their very own cherished prints and originals by putting "tacks through the corners." It's we mortals who deify these prints.
As long as a work of at is an official part of the artists output (whether signed or not) it should be considered a work of art. But that said I'd much rather have a signed print. If that option is availableโsometimes it's not.

How do you view unsigned vs signed works?, by funyoung on Jan 28, 2009 22:36:03 GMT 1, The only benefit to signed (from my own experience) might be that then there is a name on the picture to stop people asking who did it. Printed tag on some of the older prints was a good thing in my book.
I really couldn't care less about a signature while it is on the wall - if it came to selling then maybe it becomes important?

How do you view unsigned vs signed works?, by howies on Jan 29, 2009 0:12:15 GMT 1, I have recently purchased my first Banksy and Yes due to the cost of signed v's unsigned I saved my self 1500 pounds by buying unsigned. I still have the image I want and with a COA it proves to me at least I have an original print by Banksy.

How do you view unsigned vs signed works?, by howlinjack on Jan 29, 2009 0:28:24 GMT 1, signed prints are rarer so they will always cost more. its up to you if you believe a signature is worth the extra expense. i tend to look at the image and not the signature. doesn't bother me either way.

Which reminds me, WIRED did an interesting little article about this last month:

How do you view unsigned vs signed works?, by sfdoddsy on Jan 29, 2009 15:22:26 GMT 1, It depends if you profess, like so many here do, that it is the image that counts.
If so, buy the unsigned.
However, given the price differential it is obvious that for most people it is not the image, but the rarity that counts. That price differential tends to increase as time goes by.

How do you view unsigned vs signed works?, by funyoung on Jan 29, 2009 19:32:16 GMT 1, if i was just buying for the image I'd take a hi-res photo of the print and print it out myself, and save a few hundred quid each time...
What does that mean? That you only buy for the 'value'?
If I was only interested in the signature then I'd get a crayon and sign what I've got!
