Nola- Discussion, by bert on Nov 20, 2008 18:17:59 GMT 1, Hero made a good point in the other thread regarding the rain - it doesn't look as though the rain is under the umbrella as much as in the street piece...which kinda defeats the point a little bit.
I still like it a lot though, wish I had got one and well done to those that did!

Banksy should really have done better. Kinda surprised he released it as it is. No disrespect to the big-guy but my tuppence worth.

Nola- Discussion, by raiden on Nov 20, 2008 21:48:38 GMT 1, What do you think the eventual aftermarket for it will be? One's been bid up to ยฃ1,750.00 at this point. I predict by January it will settle in at ยฃ1,500.00 given that an S/N S&S on the bay went for ยฃ1,300.00.
I would have to imagine that they would do what they did with Flags and Trolleys and release another Santa's Ghetto Edition of 289 as well.
I agree with what I've heard about no unsigned editions. There has been a move away from unsigned editions throughout the market and I've heard this reiterated by people too often - but when something sells out in seconds, I could see POW pushing for it.

Nola- Discussion, by thesewalls on Nov 20, 2008 22:16:57 GMT 1,
personally, i do not like the image. well, not as a Banksy print at least. it's historical context makes it a 'witty' choice for the artist, but to me it's tired and played out. that girl with the umbrella has been around for almost 100 years, rain falling under and all. Banksy used this very American image to comment on exactly that, but did so poorly (no pun intended) in my opinion. almost as boring (or as genius) as a can of soup. he did get the whole 'salt in the wound' thing down though, which i believe to be a big part of this images meaning. that and not so much the fact that it's raining under the umbrella, but that the girl is checking the weather outside of the umbrella...a world that is inches away, but lifetimes apart.
The Umbrella Girl through the Years 1914 The original Morton Salt Umbrella Girl appeared in 1914 with the now familiar slogan 'When It Rains It Pours". 1921 The second Morton Salt Umbrella Girl danced on the scene 1921. The twenties were roaring and the little Morton girl was still pouring.
1933 In the post-Depression years from 1933 to 1941, jazz was king. And as it reigned, our little girl kept pouring. 1941 The fourth Morton Salt Umbrella Girl was introduced to America in 1941. While our boys were off to war, our little girl was serving at home. 1956 Rock and roll was starting to shake things up in 1956 and our little girl was still filling salt shakers. 1968-Today Since her most recent makeover in 1968, the current Umbrella Girl has been with us through moon launches, hip-hop and the growth of the Internet.

Nola- Discussion, by froz on Nov 20, 2008 22:30:37 GMT 1, I like the image...i dont think that the rain is supposed to go under the umbrella but what it means is it is always raining on her hence why she sticks her hand out past the umbrella where it isnt raining a couple feet from her at all. I think it is a little bit more indepth than the Morton salt umbrella girl and I dont think that "rain" in the morton salt umbrella girl is coming from underneath...its an illusion to give depth...the rain that looks like it is underneath the umbrella is actually infront of it falling around.

I know which meaning I'll use to interpret it!
I think it's insteresting that it's a street piece as I can't remember the last time he did that - CND?
So does this mean he hasn't put that much thought into it and just wanted the money to pay for some of the other shows / ghetto etc OR is it a sign of things to come in that he'll convert more street pieces into prints?

Nola- Discussion, by weeble on Nov 21, 2008 0:52:52 GMT 1, So have POW changed the Banksy images on their site to reflect that Banksy has consciously moved in some sort of direction with the monochrome?
And, I always thought the Nola image showed it was raining inside the umbrella. But my wife has just told me don't be stupid it's just rain pouring off the brolly as per everday life. So there was I thinking it was, albeit slightly cheesily, conceptual, but... now, not sure.
On the whole though, love it! Proper Bansky stylie, real street feel with a his own style that some say is impossible to achieve through stencil work, but Banksy is still in a class of his own and unmistakable. This is what this forum was about for me - the master!
