Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by rockbeer on Jul 31, 2017 22:15:17 GMT 1, I also had a great day yesterday at Upfest - amazing to see so much inspiring work being produced, and equally amazing the way that entire corner of Bristol gets completely taken over by art and artists. Just about every available surface is painted with something.
And to crown a brilliant day, I couldn't believe my luck - drove down from London, arrived around midday, strolled into the Tobacco Factory fully expecting all the limited editions to have long gone... but they still had three of the standard edition Xenz prints available (alongside what looked like quite a large pile of unsold Queens of the Castle, it must be said), so that was the shopping taken care of. Really impressed by the Xenz - the metallic hand-finishing on the birds is glorious, and the whole piece feels like a genuine labour of love and care.
It's definitely one for the wall.
A few random impressions:
- Queen of the Castle looks better on a wall than as a print.
- Xenz and Will Barras should collaborate more oftenโtheir massive wall-sized image is stunningโbut they could both do with a bit of practice driving a scissor lift.
- Faces seemed to be this year's thing. Faces and eyes were everywhere.
- (For thomasmer) I was pleased by how much 'interesting' and 'meaningful' art I got to see. Lots of it.
- Moment of the day (other than scoring the Xenz): Narrowly avoiding being totalled by a wayward dinosaur tail.
- Most surprising/unexpected art discovery of the day: Pahnl's work looks really good in the flesh, especially their little canvases
I'll try and post some photos, eventually.

Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by Leo Boyd on Jul 31, 2017 22:21:41 GMT 1, yeah I have to add to the upfest love. That was a really great event. Lots of fun. Lots of paint spread about (sometimes on the wall), weird weather and hundreds of really sound people. I am just back in Belfast and knackered so I will post some pictures tomorrow. Leo

You're welcome, I'm glad you liked them!
It is incredible, I was a bit disappointed when I first saw it as it replaced the stunning PichiAvo Zeus from last year, I think they had a tough job to go over the top of it but pulled it off, there's so much detail, my photos don't really do it justice.
Cheo left the banksy tribute on his wall to last, on the Saturday I wondered why he had left him out, went back today and had a smile at what had been added.
It was a really good weekend, the weather was bad but there were still loads of people out, loads of artists hanging out, things for the kids to get involved with and it was really well organised, I'd definitely go back again next year.

Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by thomasmer on Aug 1, 2017 2:56:52 GMT 1, Did anyone paint anything interesting or meaningful, or your typically mute street fart festival? Whilst I would never presume to tell anyone what they can post on here, I think it will be a shame if this thread turns negative. Upfest is a great event, where lots of us meet up for a weekend of art, beer and catching up. Amongst price checks, sale threads and hype this thread can be a breath of fresh air. In the past the Upfest threads have been many pages long. We can draw our own conclusions as to why that is no longer the case. As for meaningful work, there was plenty. I would even go so far as to include my own lad's work as meaningful, whilst obviously being a fledgling artist. It was also a great opportunity to be introduced to artists I was unfamiliar with, and to meet them. I see your point, but I have a feeling that all artists are made to sign a waiver that they won't paint anything political, with a strong statement or offensive, I might be wrong? But this leads to very limp art, in a genre that should have some fire up its arse, especially at a time when global warming, politics and society in general is having a bit of a melt down.
Flowers, dogs, and girls with glow sticks.
Might be the reason for a three page thread.

I wandered around for a couple of hours on Saturday and apart from a couple of exceptions thought the art was pretty weak - largely due to the often cliched subject matter. If that's a result of instruction from the organisers then it's a real shame. The overall atmosphere of the event though was great and it would have been nice to spend more time relaxing with a beer rather than rushing around.

Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by Daniel Silk on Aug 1, 2017 10:07:39 GMT 1, I didn't go, but the impression I get from the videos, photos and peoples comments is that it's become an event for a lot of wanna be Banksy's. Of course a few good, genuine artists involved, but in general not really serious Street or even Urban Art.

Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by Leo Boyd on Aug 1, 2017 10:49:26 GMT 1, If there was a waiver form no one asked me to sign it. One of the worst things about working a festival is that you dont get to see anything else that is going on. On the saturday afternoon/evening it rained so hard that we got stuck in a pub. Terrible it was. I don't know how we survived. The next day got back to my piece to find a lot of weathering and drips that i dont remember doing. So spent day 2 tidying bits up and meeting people and having the occasional beer. On the way home I saw some really nice pieces but the festival was on wind down (and so was I) so again missed pretty much all of it. Again I say that was a really good festival. Really well run. Bloody nice people. Lots of smiles. People from all over walking about Bedminster (of all places) having a good time. Thumbs up from me.

All the emails from the organisers still come to me as my son first painted there when he was 13. I didn't see any such instruction or waiver.

Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by Harveyn on Aug 1, 2017 12:53:02 GMT 1, Well in my humble opinion it was bloody fabulous. Lots of very talented artists and a huge effort by all to make this a roaring success. The crowds just get bigger and bigger every year.
I only see Upfest heading in one direction. Its the largest in Europe already.
For me street art is not just about illegal through ups and political commentary. Of course for some it is but for many seeing beautiful images on the street is about brightening up their day or simple escapism. A chance to stop and contemplate. I am pretty sure that not all of the work by some of the greatest street artists ever was heavily symbolic (Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat).
Don't get me wrong this was not just about great artists from across the globe throwing up pretty pcitures (Buff Monster etc) as there were plenty of symbolic pieces with hard hitting messages.
It was great to see families and kids getting exposed to art, interacting and enjoying the whole experience.

Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by 11 on Aug 1, 2017 14:32:42 GMT 1, Great event, great art, great friends.
If you want to see only nice murals, go the weekend after the event. If you want to see predominantly completed artwork go on the Monday or Sunday afternoon.
If you want to see artists of all skill levels, creating work from scratch and see how mediocre can become amazing (and sometimes the other way around) get there on Thursday or Friday and enjoy the entire weekend.
Wannabe's? Other than the space invader / megamatt inspired mosaics Nothing smacked of biting to me.

It was great to see families and kids getting exposed to art, interacting and enjoying the whole experience. Yes I am in total agreement with this. What struck me the most was the sheer amount of people wandering up and down the street in what is essentially an art exhibition. Unless you are pretty famous getting people to go to art exhibitions is a really hard thing to do. But Upfest have this down. Was great to be a part of it.

Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by nicey on Aug 1, 2017 21:03:13 GMT 1, Whilst I would never presume to tell anyone what they can post on here, I think it will be a shame if this thread turns negative. There wasn't much but it was there, John Doe in particular had a few strong political statements about the Conservatives in South Street park. Last year Odeith had a big political piece right on the side of the pop-up Upfest shop opposite the tobbaco factory so there definitely doesn't seem to be any instruction to create non-political art. Global warming was featured in some of the art, Andy Burns Colwill had a huge stunning piece:

and there were quite a few others. I think the majority of photos people take don't really show a true reflection of the event, as others have said paint was going up everywhere, I was there for 3 days and didn't see it all.

Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by nicey on Aug 1, 2017 21:21:34 GMT 1, I didn't go, but the impression I get from the videos, photos and peoples comments is that it's become an event for a lot of wanna be Banksy's. Of course a few good, genuine artists involved, but in general not really serious Street or even Urban Art. I think its actually the opposite, of the 350 artists that were there only a handful were the 'big names' that have work for sale, and even fewer of those actually had prints/originals for sale in the Upfest shops. For the size of the event its not commercial at all. If you were a smaller artist trying to make a name for yourself at Upfest you would get lost in the noise.
From what I've seen its genuine artists meeting up and having fun. A lot of the art although talented isn't "photogenic" so doesn't make it on to the internet.

Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by rockbeer on Aug 1, 2017 22:56:04 GMT 1, I think street art's reputation for radicalism is easily overstated thanks to the work of a relatively small number of individuals - the vast majority of what is actually seen on the street amounts to people writing their names. The doing of it - the claiming of public space as something to decorate - is in itself a political act, but as with all art genres, people with both something to say and the skill and imagination to express it visually are thin on the ground. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
Nevertheless, alongside the pretty pictures and psychedelic explosions and faces - so many faces - I saw work concerned with the environment, technology, identity, property, alienation, greed, inequality... And I saw artists inspiring and motivating each other, collaborating, buzzing off each other's work and off being in the midst of an extraordinary outpouring of creativity. I certainly didn't like everything I saw. I never do and I don't expect to. But I saw plenty to divert me and make me think and smile, plenty that was just beautiful, and plenty to make me admire the technique and composition, even where the ideas might be a bit thin. I'd definitely go again. I found it inspiring being among so many people out on the streets, all there either to make art or to look at it.

Saturday is the main one for me because later in the afternoon/early evening my missus will take the little one back home and I'll have free reign to "get on it" hhah I'll make sure I come and say hello! Haha funny enough, me taking a 2nd space was to ensure I dont get on it lol. Been 6 months now.. I had a bit of an issue for many years. This is the 'cleanest' I've been since I was 15.
