Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by rosstierney on Nov 26, 2008 3:59:59 GMT 1, right, you can add me to the list of refunded orders & you'll find my heart in my stomach
besides being gutted, i'm also pissed off that i was left to find out for myself
if i hadn't been a member of this form, i'd have been left waiting for a non-existent print until my next banksy statement arrived
i went on a two day bender to celebrate & told so many people, feeling like a tit is an understatement
i know for a fact this issue was caused by the growing number of people using scripts, which might i add are illegal: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack
i can also tell you the site going down wasn't caused by people f5ing
since the script theories on friday, i've been on a mission to prove it & i can, but it will cost me ยฃ350 which i'm not prepared to pay
as for the friday release, i doubt the prints were non-existent, i just think pow were unaware of the thursday issue until later on that day so they had no choice but to refund those orders too
i do think they deserve the same consolation as the thursday customers though, if not more so because i know some continued their persistence through the night
i also want to clear up this ip bullshit
as long as both orders differ in name, address & card used to pay there's no issue
thank you & goodnight

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by alsbabar on Nov 26, 2008 4:07:52 GMT 1, Ross - POW's site went down prior to release, when print was released, site was slow, but you will find a good number of people on this very forum, by merely F5ing ended up with a print - and their site was slow, due to the sheer weight of traffic - so what is your point?

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by bored with screen names on Nov 26, 2008 4:08:30 GMT 1, Can you elaborate being able to spend 350 GBP to prove the script theory?
How does that work exactly, and why not post information about it so many someone else can either prove it, or we can pull together 1 GBP from 350 people and prove it.
Because to be honest I'm not buying it, but I'd gladly admit I am mistaken with proof.

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by rosstierney on Nov 26, 2008 4:24:10 GMT 1, the site went down soon after the e-mail was sent to the mailing list because the scripts were enabled by their users, sending thousands of requests per minute (dos attack) to this page: www.picturesonwalls.com/Art_Artists.asp?Artist=Banksy&Offset=0&PageNo=1, so when the print/buy button was uploaded, a print or numerous (depending) was/were secured
$500/ยฃ350 is the figure i've been quoted by a dos attacker in the US who's prepared to send me the script, once built to my specification, to test before making payment

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by raiden on Nov 26, 2008 4:31:35 GMT 1, Ross, why don't you start a collection up and distribute it to everyone for $20 a piece. 25 people would probably say, "hey why not"... especially if you can modify the script for other pages... which is possible.
If it worked for both POW, Shepard Fairey, and Black Rat Press, that would totally be worth it for $25-$40 a person.
Honestly, the more anarchy brought to the print world, the more we'll reach a lasting solution...
I still think the best solution is Forum free for all... or Banksy quiz... that would weed out the "true" fans

It's not possible that thousands of users were hitting F5 and going to the site because of the e-mail?
How are you so sure it was scripts, and not just normal users hitting refresh?

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by rosstierney on Nov 26, 2008 4:38:18 GMT 1, raiden, i don't want this scrip, i don't want anyone to have this script, i despise the script, i just wanted to prove it existed
bored.with.screennames, i estimate 30,000 people were after that print & say each f5'd twice a second, it's not enough to bring down the site
read wikipedia to gain an understanding of how a dos attack works

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by rosstierney on Nov 26, 2008 4:49:29 GMT 1, there are different types of dos attacks, whether their aim is to crash a site or slow it down there are various methods & various agendas in this case, the method was a script, programmed to send thousands of requests per minute to the site, to slow it down enough so that when the print/'add to basket' button was uploaded, a print was secured before the release, the combined users were hitting the site so hard that it crashed the script users had to decrease their requests, decreasing their chances but obviously not enough pow could bring someone in with the knowledge to take a look at their site statistics, identify the ip addresses hitting the site manually impossible hard, phone their provider & obtain their details which they'll be happy to provide as it's illegal

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by hollowsphere on Nov 26, 2008 5:06:23 GMT 1, If the aim was to slow it down it still would afford everyone hitting F5 to add the print to the basket when the print came up. the thing is, there would be no way to tell exactly how the site and servers would react to a DOS attack, and when the site came up everyone would still have the same chance. you're on the wrong script trail here, if there is a script the only one that could be successful to guarantee a print would be an add to basket script.
I make my living in network security and I am going to have to lean in your direction on this one. A DOS attack would have eaten up the entire bandwidth and nobody would have been able to get in (including the supposed script users), and a script that required user interaction to adjust the amount of times it was hitting the server would probably not have had time to even be adjusted with such a small print run in such high demand. I would keep that 500 bucks if I were you. My kneejerk reaction to that is that it sounds like someone is trying to rip you off.

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by rosstierney on Nov 26, 2008 5:11:36 GMT 1, this is the last time i'm going to comment on the subject
i f5'd & was successful to an extent so this is not sour grapes & proves it's not impossible
but pfffffffffft, read back through your posts & you'll find you've been extremely defensive throughout
an 'add to basket' script is the same thing
attack the site hard enough to slow it down & when that 'add to basket' button appears, the script takes split second action
seriously, goodnight

Oops. Sounds like I might have stepped into a bit more heated discussion than I thought, sorry, I didnt read the whole thread. It just doesn't sound 100 percent plausible in my experience with DOS attacks for there to be a partial denial that would be able to be exploited by a particular individual script as it would seem that the script would be just as impacted by anyone else by the pipeline being overloaded with a DOS attack. This is actually professional curiosity for me coupled with not wanting to see someone get scammed for 500 bucks by someone with questionable motives. Not saying it is IMPOSSIBLE UNHEARD OF but in my experience it just sounds implausible. I would love to be proven wrong though, I would be more than interested to dissect this script and to be honest, I will probably research this and see if I can come up with a method on my own. That's what I do, its part of my job. The difference being if I did I would report it to the vulnerable sites rather than offer it for sale.

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by aginghippie on Nov 26, 2008 5:26:06 GMT 1, Can we put an end to this garbage? Securing systems is my day job, I'm good at it and I've been doing it for 10 years now for a variety of serious companies.
Firstly if you are paying $350 for a DoS script you are being ripped off because it won't work. The bandwidth at your end is far lower than the bandwidth at POWs end so you need to get lots of people doing this in conjunction (strangely like everyone hitting F5).
Next up if you DoS a site you are not going to get a print - the emphasis is on the word "DENIAL". A DoS attack is there to prevent anyone from accessing the system and not to give a selected few access. As an aside DoS attacks are usually performed to extort money from the target (ask Blue Square) and professionals hire time on a botnet for the event (this is disturbingly cheap).
The idea that you can 'slightly' DOS a site is, umm, interesting. The tuning would need to be very precise and since you couldn't tell how many other people would hit the site it's impossible to do. As I have said repeatedly the script needs to see the page text to ensure that the print is on offer and to hit the buy button, simply raining down hits on the website won't do it.
Look - this just doesn't work. Were there scripts? Probably. Did they do the damage? No. There was a bug in the POW website that failed under load and that was simply down to the number of people hitting the site. If you feel the urge to spend $350 on a script, well there is an old saying that a fool and his money are soon parted.

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by bored with screen names on Nov 26, 2008 5:33:43 GMT 1, No offense Ross as I enjoy your posts for the most part and know you are a valued member of the forum, but I must agree with the above posts that a DoS attack is not the cause of the problems here.
And I've also been a staunch defender namely because I've luckily been able to secure the last few Banksys from nothing but good solid F5ing and no usage of scripts, so it's hard for me to believe that there are all these evildoers out there screwing the rest of us normal F5ing folk.

after reading through communication with my contact, i might have misled some people as i quote "this would definately be considered a DNS attack in most countries"
to be honest pfffffffffft, an auto refresher & built in add to basket script makes more sense to me
he's said he's prepared to build it & send it to me to test on an available product & teach me to operate it before making payment so as long as he's still prepared to go ahead, i am & if they want it, pow can have it to do with as the please

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by Curley on Nov 26, 2008 11:15:38 GMT 1, Ross - POW's site went down prior to release, when print was released, site was slow, but you will find a good number of people on this very forum, by merely F5ing ended up with a print - and their site was slow, due to the sheer weight of traffic - so what is your point?
Im going agree with Als here as i have seen the POW site do this on a number of times when the site has been too busy. I know of at least 4 people who all scored a NOLA with out using scripts and i feel the problem is much less than people are making out.
Way too much paranoia and bitterness flying about this forum recently.

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by kennas on Nov 26, 2008 11:28:23 GMT 1, I have had a couple of requests from members asking for this discussion to be stopped But I wonder that this could actually all be very useful to POW in stopping this sort of thing next time round. Surely the more info they can get on this sort of thing the better
I agree it is getting a bit tired, however I believe it should be allowed to continue for a little longer at least. Would be nice to know whether the thurs peeps get a print, and whether the fridays get any sort of offer. Then we can all have closure, move on, and get on with our evry day lives!!!

Im going agree with Als here as i have seen the POW site do this on a number of times when the site has been too busy. I know of at least 4 people who all scored a NOLA with out using scripts and i feel the problem is much less than people are making out. Way too much paranoia and bitterness flying about this forum recently.
Make that 5. I F5'd and struck it lucky and I did the same with S&S. Not so lucky with Trollies and Morons though.
Swings and roundabouts ?? I think so, win some lose some.

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by DYL4N on Nov 26, 2008 11:35:52 GMT 1, On this board and other boards, I reckon at least 40+ have scored nola's.
I dont think scripts are the problem. The problem is: 289 prints available - 5,000+ refreshing the same page!
Fairq or lottery would be 289 prints 20,000 + entries, its not rocket science, multiples family and friends etc. Work it out its not rocket science!
End of.
