I agree there will always be haters.
But disliking the art is fine. you might not like the image, the way the colours ar produced or how it is signed!
But to be personal about such a great artist and a printer who really works hard to get it right for us all to enjoy is un-necessary and to me totally un-acceptable.

I'm not the biggest fan of Choe's and have really been trying hard to appreciate his work of late. I was left rather perplexed with the direction of some of the pieces in his Lazardies show earlier in the year, but I do see a glimmer of attraction in his water colours and with this new print.

looks good to me. I like how it has a 3D feel with some of the hair blurred out contrasting with the other hair in the forefront creating some depth.

Stuey refered to Choe as being shit, while you say you're not doubting his ability as an artist. One of these comments is a respectful way of saying you don't like the work, while the other is a personal insult of the artist with no regard for common decency or other peoples' views . I don't think you were really agreeing with Stuey's insightless rubbish at all, were you?

Put my obvious bias for Choe aside and take what i have to say in more general terms. Personally, I think it is a GREAT thing when artists inspire contempt and disdain from some onlookers while others are amazed with the same talent and share a love of the work. Choe strikes a chord with people in the love/hate category and i think that is a beautiful thing. There are plenty of struggling artists that fail to inspire any reaction whatsoever and very few find unanimous love. The GREAT ones inspire reactions of all kinds from both sides. Who knows where Choe's name ends up all said and done but he's on a pretty good path thus far and most importantly for him, he loves what he's doing. I know for a fact that Choe takes pleasure in the hate and shrugs it off so anyone voicing disgust at his direction or a certain composition isn't going to bother him. Obviously this is not true of most artists as many are more introverted than he is which is something to keep in mind as we chat about the merits or lack thereof of work from others.

As for the method used, again I know Andrew so I'm biased. I'm sure when artists started making reproductions of their work over a hundred years ago that people dismissed it then too and now look how many people lovingly hang prints in their homes. Look at the reaction Warhol received using the technique on canvas to create "original" works that people pointed at saying they weren't true works of art. Now they trade in the 10s of millions of dollars and are some of the most coveted works in the world. Giclee is simply the newest reproduction method on the block and people are notoriously slow to accept change. There is nothing we are going to accomplish on this forum to change thousands of years of human nature. Tradition is hard to break and there are purists that will never accept another reproduction method as funny as that statement sounds. Hell, digital music sounds damn good now with fantastic digital to analog converters and even I still have an old turntable to play some analog records. There are plenty of ways for us all to enjoy our favorite art.

In the meantime, I kind of loathe the politically correct way we've swung as a world though there is something to be said for politeness. I would hope we can all continue to call it as we see it. There will be some who choose not to comment on work they don't like and I can appreciate that stance. At the same time, I for one enjoy reading the comments of those on both sides of the aisle.

I like David Choe and own a "Falling for Grace" but I have to admit I don't like the London Girl and these editions with the city type hair, just my personnel taste. One that I have been eying for a while is "Seedy" something about this just clicks with me. Maybe I see my Christmas present to myself here

This latest print by David Choe is rubbish. That is my opinion. He started out being interesting and talented, but he has totally sold out. His latest work is bland and far, far worse than the majority of stuff posted on this forum. I assume (Zippy) that you own some Choe work and are dissapointed that your investment has died.

My post was a conscious move to question Choe's recent output. It's cheap, nasty and well below his potential output.

Seen some lovely commissions on this forum but the choice for prints of late seems very strange.

It was just an example of the 21 colour screenprint, I do not have this in my collection, in fact, I do not collect prints at all.

The physical printing is a work of art in itself. I love a lot of his stuff but not a huge fan, I think he is trying too hard to be cool and different and needs to get back to basics (imo). He gains or suffers from being in a genre of his own.
