Banksy Crude Oils - Video, by gm on Sept 17, 2006 11:02:49 GMT 1, I've got a few photos, but they're all mobile phone quality and not really worth putting up. I'm pretty sure at least a dozen people on here have more, and better ones than I do.

Banksy Crude Oils - Video, by ptron on Nov 9, 2006 17:18:11 GMT 1, I know I'm going to get flammed for saying this, but aren't all the crude oils kind of fakes anyways. Does Banksy even paint them, or does he just art direct and put his name on it.

Banksy Crude Oils - Video, by thwaites on Nov 9, 2006 18:12:03 GMT 1, hello all. i have not said anything yet but i feel now is the time.
No hostility or anything here, but how can you call his crude oils fakes? what is fake about them? As far as i know they were all genuine paintings that he "vandalised" (i hate that word, implies they were mindless actions of an uncivilised brute, which of course is untrue). Surely if he had painted them himself it would completely negate the whole point of the pieces. I think the most interesting aspect of these works (and many of his other works) is the fact that he has taken a piece which had a particular meaning and audience at one time, and by adding to it/altering it has drastically altered the meaning and understanding of the piece of art. And i really dont see why someone wouldnt consider buying a reproduction if you cant afford the real thing... sometimes art can just be for aesthetic purposes. I do love my crude oils postcards, i have framed them up a treat! I would like a larger scale image of some of them though. Hope everyones bums arent as sore as mine. Bye!

He's actually a very talented painter in both oil and acrylic. The one thing that separates him from most, he is a talented artist.. he works in 3d, sculptural works print, clay, installation, oil, acrylic, stencil, graf.. the lot !.. not many artist in any discipline attempt this.

Banksy Crude Oils - Video, by BK83 on Nov 9, 2006 19:51:05 GMT 1, NuMusic -- I agree, It really is quite amazing how many genres he works within to create his art. I would like to see him attempt some street art utilizing his oil and acrylic painting skills in the same way Dan Witz does. Banksy's mind for political and public humour is more refined than Witz's so it could make for some very interesting pieces.

He described them himself as "remixes" Kind of sums it up well for me , old classics bought up to date with a modern twist

Banksy Crude Oils - Video, by Ågent ßacardi on Nov 9, 2006 21:21:19 GMT 1, Regarding the repros, I think you should get them if you're in love with the image and the message... especially if it's well done. Like Silky said, not everyone can afford £30,000 for a canvas, and since there are no prints of the canvas pieces, repros are the next best thing. Yes, the value will never go up, but is that the only reason why you're interested in Banksy's work?
So if you have a repro hanging on your wall, yes, it will never be a 'vandalized' masterpiece by Banksy, but the meaning and significance of the piece will still be there as far as you're concerned... and to me, that means much more than its monetary worth.
Besides, even if I bought a genuine £30,000 canvas and loved the piece so much that I would never want to part with it, how does price appreciation affect me? I'm never going to sell it. It could be worth a zillion dollars in a year, but as long as you don't sell it, price appreciation/depreciation really doesn't affect you at all.
I guess it all depends on, as the POW newsletter has alluded, do you buy art out of love, or out of what money you can make off it?

Yeah I totally love them, I was just unsure if he did the actual remixing or he art directed someone else.

His quote was more to do with that he couldnt paint quickly enough and kept getting caught, so he moved to stencils which he could slap up in a matter of seconds.
If you look at some of the stuff Kal posted on originals and canvases from years ago (i.e. not crude oils "amendments") you can see stuff that he has painted from scratch.
