Why oh Why??, by kingdomcome on Sept 18, 2007 11:21:35 GMT 1, Why cant POW be straight up like Lazinc and just tell us whats going to be released, when, how much it will cost etc?
They cant say they dont know.....
It might give people the time to figure out if they want it, can they afford it and whether they have the time to get it.
Considering people spend thousands of pounds of their hard earned cash on this stuff, surely they should be treated with a little more respect.
Next Week: Antony Micallef - sounds like a tease for a crap TV show.
Moan over.....

Why oh Why??, by wonkeydonkey on Sept 18, 2007 11:41:01 GMT 1, Perhaps POW should set up a system whereby once you have bought one of their prints from a less popular artist, you are eligible to buy one of the next banksy or micallef prints in a type of 'pre-sale'. i.e. the next 500 sales will get sent an email that would allow them to have a look and have the option to buy the next banksy.
I think this would be a good way or promoting their less well known artists (which i suppose is an important part of their business for the future) and would help reduce the amount of flipping as it would reduce their profit. It would also be good business for POW as it would shift a load of the stuff that has been there for a while!
Just thinking out loud, but it would probably go some way to improving the disclosure from POW, the type of person that gets the art, and would give a leg up to upcoming people on the scene. There are probably a few prints that i would buy and find some wall space for, if i knew it might help me get my longed for Banksy.
It's my first post, so please be gentle if you don't agree with me!

Sorry mate but it would never work!
Flipper would think nothing of dropping £50 on an unkown if they knew they would be gauranteed a micallef or Banksy which may give them a return of £2k or so!
it would also not give any benefit to the smaller artists as ebay would become flooded with their prints on resale!
in my opinion the best thing is to give everyone the same information, that is an advance preview of what is coming up, and perhaps what day, and leave it at that!

Why oh Why??, by pezlow on Sept 18, 2007 12:46:37 GMT 1, POW can't really win whichever way they do it. If they announce a release in advance the website crashes (morons). If they don't announce it at all people moan that they didn't get an email announcing it (the recent Faile release is an example of that). Now they have tried a different tack - telling us that a new print is coming, sending an email out to all their mailing list (twice!) and saying that it will be released this week.
I'm sure people will moan about that but in my view it is the fairest way of doing things. We all know a Micallef print is going to be released this week so we all start on a level playing field. The people who are most likely to get it are those who are most committed to f5'ing.
I do agree that it would be good to have a preview. Without a preview you will find lots of people buying it and then having to decide whether they like it or not. And you can't really blame people for that.

Well what about the people who's work doesn't consist of sitting on their arses all day in front of a computer. Some with their widgets ready to glow! (Oo'er missus)

Why oh Why??, by pezlow on Sept 18, 2007 14:04:04 GMT 1, They sent an email on friday. I got it twice.
And goffy I accept that those who are at their computer have a huge advantage but in fairness there isn't that much POW can do about that, short of working evenings and weekends and releasing it then.
I'm not saying the system is perfect but its probably the best they are going to come up with. I for one would be happy if they employed a similar system for the next banksy release, rather than the carnage that was the morons release.

Why oh Why??, by kingdomcome on Sept 18, 2007 14:29:35 GMT 1, Whats wrong with them working the odd weekends for big releases. They were happy to work during Santas Ghetto?
Its inevitable that the site will crash, its the same with ticket agencies etc. What isnt acceptable is how long it takes POW to get it back up and running - with little information.
From my experience from buying gig tickets, the sites are usually back up within an hour or two - or they at least inform you that the site is overloaded and that everything is sold out.
I really admire the way FAILE handled their print release.
Ok, the site crashed, but at least they kept everyone informed and apologised for the inconvenience.
We'll just have to see what happens I suppose. Lets see if anyone at POW has taken on board its customers concerns.....

Why oh Why??, by scavos on Sept 18, 2007 17:01:22 GMT 1, Personally, I'm just glad POW are releasing the Micallef prints at all and that they have informed us it will be happening sometime this week. That is already more info than we get for a Banksy release.
OK POW aren't a perfect print selling machine, but at least they will be selling some highly sought after prints by one the best artists around at the moment for less than the current 'market value' and most likely less than the Laz lithos. I'm grateful for that. I'm not a fan of the 3 of the 4 Laz images and I'm hoping those released by POW will be more to my taste. I'll be working and living my life as usual although probably f5ing a little more often and if I'm lucky I'll time it right see a print I like and buy it. If not, there's always next time.

Why oh Why??, by Run Pig Run on Sept 18, 2007 18:19:56 GMT 1, they have given us the timeframe of 'this week' if you can be bothered to sit on your computer checking the site every two seconds thats up to you but you will have 20 minutes to decide whether you like the image or not, thats if you manage to get one in your basket. truth is it doesn't matter what they look like they will be worth thousands so you can always sell it and go on a nice holiday or swap it for something else you do like.
good luck, i'll be at work when it all kicks off.

Strictly they didn't tell us the time. They said 3pm GMT and then released it at 2pm GMT. And it was complete carnage. The website crashed completely. Cue endless moaning on here about how shite POW are. As I said they cannot win. They are selling a limited edition product where demand hugely outstrips supply at the moment. Most people will end up being unhappy.

Why oh Why??, by Lord Lucas Roham on Sept 18, 2007 21:37:29 GMT 1, Any thoughts on Price, Edition Size, Paper type etc, seems to be quiet on that front.
Also noticed no 'rules of engagement', that mean you would be allowed to buy a set?

Why oh Why??, by speebe on Sept 18, 2007 23:06:09 GMT 1, I've bought ALL my POW prints in person either from Santas Ghetto or shops/stores (Magma and Forbidden Planet etc) that stocked them back in the day... I love seeing them in the flesh and making my mind up. Although in hindsight i've ballsed up most times, missing out on classic Banksy images in favor of early Dolk, D*face etc
I wish it was possible to buy them that way... I was excited by the recent message from POW about their in-house gallery.... But whatever happend to the appointments at POW for their impending gallery space eh?? Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone????Anyone?

I'm sure POW have these ideas over a cup of tea and a joint later end up forgetting what the plan was in the first place. Its quite endearing really I think.

Why oh Why??, by peasant on Sept 19, 2007 9:37:34 GMT 1, I think we all know POW are cashing in...hence the rise of the numbered prints to £200+ - I remember when they were £50...those were the days.
I have plenty of friends who like the art, and are not too bothered about the value - why don't POW do their usual top dollar limited screen runs and then do an unsigned/un-numbered litho run of say 50,000 copies and sell them for £10 a pop?
POW still get fat, and we all get a nice bit of Banksy ;D
