I was in London at the weekend and went to Cass Art on Berwick Street, The London Graphic Centre in Covent Garden and a couple of other art shops and they were all out of stock. Apparently there is a shortage of them as their supplier is moving warehouse so unable to deliver for a good few weeks.
If you know of any good places online that can deliver then please let me know.
Also, do you think using foam core is necessary along with the sleeves and portfolio? The reason I ask is that if I used 3mm foam core that a number of people on this forum seem to be using, then my potrfolio would be full with just a few prints. All portfolios I found at the weekend were not very wide/deep. They would probably hold about 20 sleeves/prints without the foamcore but a lot less with it, maybe half a dozen.

"Sorry it has taken some time to get back to you I have been waiting for an answer from our suppliers. Unfortunately our supplier is looking at changing to acid free sleeves very soon, however this will not be happening until aprox a couple of months time as they still have stocks of their old sleeves.
Sorry I cannot help further."
So it looks like the sleeves they use are currently not acid free. Anyone know of anyone else, or what do people think of storing the prints in these for a few months until they do stock the acid free ones? You think the prints will be ok in the for this amount of time?

The post I just added was their response. I'm not sure what difference it will make to your prints if you stored them in them for a few months, but from reading on this forum acid free is the way to go. A1 Acid Free Art Sleeves, by orangematt on Jul 19, 2007 21:32:19 GMT 1, Hiya.. not sure if these are of any interest to you,, i use them for my collection, after failing to find any reasonably priced archive storage i ended up importing these in bulk from usa.. as i ended up with so many i have occasionally sold them in packs of 10 on eBay for £10 = p&p £4.50
they are produced by Krystal Seal , slightly smaller than A1 and they dont have the portfolio ring holes.. But i do believe they are a good solution to storage problems ! Please do let me know if any of you would like to check them out also appreciate any information if any problems have arisen from using these ( as i say my whole collection -apart from the pieces on the walls obviously- are in these envelopes )

I'm surprised the plastic has much effect, surely it's nothing compared to the effect the wrong type of paper or card could have.

Why is it important that my framing materials be acid-free?
Mount/matboard which is not chemically inert and free of acid, transfers its acidity to the paper which over time causes it to turn brown (known as mount/mat burn), become brittle, and even to disintegrate when removed from the mount/mat. Museums recommend that mounts/mats be made from 100-percent cotton rag mountboard/matboard, at least two-ply in thickness.
A less expensive alternative is "conservamat" or conservation board, which is made from highly purified pH neutral wood pulp. Some fabrics like linen, cotton, and silk are also safe to use.
