Habitat Bacall frame, by blupp on Apr 20, 2008 12:17:00 GMT 1, I assume some of you have one or the other Habitat Bacall frame.
www.habitat.co.uk/fcp/product/browse/Wall-frame/985126
I have two Live East Die Young prints by our beloved Mr Evil. They are 56x76cm in size and of course too big for the usual 50x70cm frame. Now these Habitat Bacall frames are a little bit bigger in size. They are advertised with having 50x70 as poster size in the middle and come with a margin top/right/left/bottom between the poster and the actual frame border; this allows you to see the back wall between frame border and the image.
Now I wonder if anyone of you can use his/her tape measure and tell me the actual visible size inside the frame in cm? So whether or not it's big enought for the Evils.
I wish the Habitat people would write this on their product description. Can't be that hard though!
thanks!

Habitat Bacall frame, by JonW on Apr 20, 2008 12:48:04 GMT 1, Is this the one with 2 sheets of glass? I dont want to worry you but if youve any damp anywhere wont your prints stick to the glass and then tear if you ever tried to remove them? Just a thought.... If anyone has experience of these and can dispel that myth Id be happier to use one as they look cool and are a bargain

Habitat Bacall frame, by funyoung on Apr 20, 2008 13:05:49 GMT 1, No idea about the size i'm afraid. Habitat frames are great but be very careful when transporting as the paint chips very easily. The damp would have to get into your frame first. Hmmm. Possible I suppose. Don't use them with anything of 'value' (relative term) then?

Habitat Bacall frame, by themightyreds on Apr 20, 2008 20:05:06 GMT 1, They also do a larger 60x80 one that i keep a couple of 76x56 prints in (Blek - MWWTW + Cetp - I Love Hackney). Been in there over a year now and no ill effects. As mentioned they do chip easily so inspect them properly before leaving the store..>! And the glass has very sharp unfinished edges!

Habitat Bacall frame, by JonW on Apr 21, 2008 1:25:30 GMT 1, Thanks for the input guys and thinkinbg about it you can also tape round the edge of the two glass sheets to get a seal I guess if it worried you.
I agree you should stick low value things in these, but as you say thats a classic question these days. I wonder if I had a few of these frames 2 years back what I would have put in there that was basically worthless.... LOL

Habitat Bacall frame, by colonelkurtz on Apr 21, 2008 11:21:55 GMT 1, the glass on these is MEGA thin, i thought i would change prints every month or so to stop them sticking... (ideal for a collector!) but the glass is so thin i've broken one (even though i was being super careful) and don't want to touch my other one in fear of doing the same.
The glass feels like it will break from it's own weight.
Although they are a cheap alternative to normal framing.

They do break under their own weight, i picked up the glass at one end and it broke in my hands.

Habitat Bacall frame, by poofly on Apr 21, 2008 15:05:43 GMT 1, Be careful with putting these frames anywhere near sunlight. They are not UV protective glass and as such your prints will fade if in any kind of sunlight.
Might be an idea to replace the shitty glass with either UV plexiglass or the real stuff though quite expensive.

In the framers on Saturday the framer was adamant that I shouldn't get UV glass unless I was putting the print in direct sunlight or lighting it directly with spots. No matter how much I tried to pay more money he just kept trying to talk me out of it.

Habitat Bacall frame, by poofly on Apr 21, 2008 17:15:58 GMT 1, tell him to feck off and do what you ask of him.
UV plexiglass is cheaper but it scratches really easily - i.e. don't wipe it unless you really have to and then use something uber soft.
Don't understand why someone would try and talk you out of it unless thay are a lazy bastard who can't be arsed to order some in. My framer didn't have any so had to wait a wee bit but I'll be damned if I'd let sunlight destroy a print.

Habitat Bacall frame, by themightyreds on Apr 21, 2008 17:39:43 GMT 1, You're framer was doing you a favour angryboy. It costs more and does nothing for improving your viewing pleasure. None of my pieces are hung in direct sunlight so none have uv glass. Simple. Plus most modern inks will resist fading for many, many years in general room light conditions.
Think there's a lot of paranoia about light affecting prints but i've never seen any evidence of damage through a piece being framed and exposed to normal conditions.

There was a lot of nice prints lying around in there (Faile, Micallef, Denning...) and he spoke of hanging Warhols and Hockneys and never using UV glass for them so I trusted his opinion.

I would have thought over time this might occur. i could be wrong tho.
