Home Framing - save some cash - Banksy content, by jamieb on Jan 17, 2009 12:29:33 GMT 1, Just thought I'd share some pics of a few prints that I have framed myself lately.
I'm luckly enough to have a mate who's a wood machine and can make me the odd moulding, although you can go to somewhere like Lion who do a chop service for moulding.
I bought a hand tool for joining the frame and a band strap to hold it while doing this and went to Lion and bought conservation board, tape etc... d-rings, picture cord, sealing tape, frame bumpers etc. - all in all cost about £140, but have enough sundries to do about another 80 frames. Just will need to get mount board each time.
Admittedly I am a designer so are not that scared of cutting mounts etc. but its only about patience and practice.
I say give it a go and get your art on the walls and save yourself a fair amount on framing.

Home Framing - save some cash - Banksy content, by headzup on Jan 17, 2009 12:49:59 GMT 1, great skills. i think it's a really interesting point as too how much cash you spend on framing with all the doom and gloom on the financials. it is after all about the print - the frame compliments the print. i'd love to have a bash and save a few £, but just like my diy skills it's all about big cahoonahs and the right kit. well done buddy.

Home Framing - save some cash - Banksy content, by Zippy on Jan 18, 2009 0:30:36 GMT 1, Jamie, good job on the prints. However, you are very brave to do this and wouldn't you rather get your Banksy's professionally framed so you know you dont have to worry in the future? I understand framing normal pieces this way but I couldnt risk a signed banksy going in a 'home made' frame. This must be left to the experts!

With respect I think this what framers want you to think. There is nothing "Home made" about these frames - the are made by a professional wood machinest and then painted in their factory. The mount board is conservation grade, with artbak conservation board behind it and the a further sheet of artbak mositure resistent board behind that.
It's all assembled using the same fixings and tapes that a framer uses. Nothing is attached to the print. It is held in place by PH neutral mylar strips which are attached to the backing board. It is all 100% reversible. TBH I'm happier knowing exactly how it's been done than getting a print back from a framer all sealed up not knowing what's happening behind the mount.
All the material were bought from Lion who are a very large trade supplier to framers and likely where a lot of framers buy their materials from.
I just don't see the risk. I understand this isn't for everyone but you shouldn't be frightened into not trying it.

Home Framing - save some cash - Banksy content, by curiousgeorge on Jan 18, 2009 12:36:37 GMT 1, In my experience all conservation grade materials are not equal, so much so it's a bit of a minefield out there talking to different suppliers about the products they carry.
Doing this at home and true Archival framing are MILES apart
That said well done for getting stuck in, and learning along the way. You must be feeling rather smug now (rightly so)

thanks, well chuffed to get one in the end. I just read a lot on the net, there are quite a lot of sites will good information for home or hobbiest framers. Then I just gave it a go, did the bast and the eine first. If you are going to window mount it is dead easy. Float mounting requires a little more thought.

I agree, but I'm not claiming this to be museum or archival, but I've paid £250 for a similar size frame done to conservation standard.
I think people get a little carried away, it's not like it an original DeVinci drawing. It's a screen print on modern paper using up to date inks that are UV proof etc...
Conservation is fine.

Sorry mate did not mean it to come across that way, my point being different brands often use mis-leading descriptions. The backing board in question came up on another forum. It's only the white faced side that can be considered conservation, so with that in mind.... Many purists/decent framers would consider it not to be a conservation product at all

Im framing myself also, so completely agree what your saying in here.
I have these strips too, very easy to use, but my problem with them is that they take the mount board a bit to far away from the print - do you have that problem too?
