I was curious about everyones thoughts on inexpensive framing.
Like many of us, I have way too many prints that are sitting in tubes.
And with the economy the way it is, I don't foresee many of them getting framed for a long time.
Am I better off continuing to store them in tubes? Or would I be better off transferring them to some cheap ikea(ish) frames?
Advice, opinions and even sarcasm are welcome replies.

you should never store prints in tubes - tubes are just for transportation ;D

I have 4 IKEA 70x50 frames (£20) that I put prints in until I can afford custom frames.
If I haven't moved it into a proper frame in 3 months or so it means that I don't like it as much as I thought and so store it.

cheap frames VS. no frames, by Heavyconsumer on May 7, 2009 17:25:02 GMT 1, If I had Habitat or Ikea (or anywhere) locally that sold that size of cheap frame, I would go with cheap frame as opposed to no frame, but I don't, so the few unframed prints I have with me are in a sleeve between 2 large pieces of wood (haven't even found a damned flat file in this city!). Make sure you get your prints out of those tubes and flattened unless you want rippled prints on the wall. Those Selwyns sleeves look amazing especially for larger prints, but even a cheapo A1 'folio with cheapo acid free sleeves is a lot better than keeping them rolled up too long (Search the forum for "portfolio", there must be a dozen+ threads in here about where to get cheap ones - you can get sorted for around £30ish).

Better than the IKEA jobbies as you can vary the sizes and frames etc more and still cheap, they deliver them to your door.. my Eine LOVE is somewhere on here in a frame from them and I have just ordered frames for my blek and slink this week
Others that are waiting Mrs G-Man approval stored flat in a potfolio as discussed many times on here

The quality of frames was quite bad for any money and wouldn't use them again. Either store your prints in archival acid free sleeves or rotate them in Ikea/habitat frames out of direct sunlight and wait until you can afford to get them framed up properly.

Imo I dont see the point in owning prints just to keep in a portfolio. I only buy if I know where I can hang it. I know people like to store and collect things, but surely art is supposed to be on walls? If you cant afford to frame what you have, now is the time to stop buying, or start selling.

It takes a while to find suitable ones but every so often I have found some real smart ones that are quality and with a bit of attention they've cleaned up nicely. repainted some of them then sanded them back. Twice now I've managed to find two large solid wooden carved frames in the baroque style paid pennies for them. My local framers which i never bother with wanted £70.00 ( Approx A2 in size) to make for one i found in a charity shop and paid £2.00 for.
If you've got the time its always worth a quick trawl

If you value your prints and want to keep them in good condition (which I'm sure you do), do the job properly. Hang on and get UV protected glass and keep them stored flat in an archival folder, as suggested by Curiousgeorge. I put a few prints in cheap, off the shelf frames and ended up getting them all reframed. I have a local framer in my village now who does everything and is very reasonable. He just framed an applause (big print), with UV protected glass, double mount and acid free materials for £100!

For my less expensive prints, I found these "poster pockets".
They are about 15$ USD each and work perfectly. The one thing i'm not sure about is if they are acid-free. I am assuming so but still trying to get more details.

Lets say you put a 50x70cm print in a 50x70cm frame the odds are that the edges of the paper will touch the inside of the frame, acid from the wood will leach into the edge of the print, also the backing is cr@p so you will need a barrier board. It will cost you more in the long run, get them out of the tubes, go to your local framer for a couple sheets of conservation mountboard and get some acid-free tissue paper and make a portfolio with the conservation board, place your prints in between layers of tissue paper and put in between the mountboard. You will save money in the long run, which you can then pay a framer with to do a decent framing job

Well you know what you need to do! Don't whatever you do force the prints flat too quickly. Let them slowly relax out of the tube
