Judgement Day on ripples, by Andy'77 on Aug 7, 2007 8:02:59 GMT 1, So I got my Judgement Day framed in March at a professional framers and it's since started rippling along the top of the print. Does that mean it's like that way for life or is it possible to get it removed and flattened before being reframed. Any info would be appreciated.

Judgement Day on ripples, by menace2sobriety on Aug 7, 2007 10:17:19 GMT 1, Its a fucker when this happens
The best thing to do is speak to the framer who did it originally and see what they suggest
My banksy CND soldiers had some ripples and they put it in a heated flat press . It sorted out most of the ripples but there are still a few.
Anybody else have this problem?

Yep, i had this with my Applause, took it back, it was placed under the "heavy weight' for two weeks.
Its looking much better now. The temperature and humidity also can affect prints and cause ripples.

Judgement Day on ripples, by Andy'77 on Aug 7, 2007 13:13:42 GMT 1, Cheers for the replies. I'll speak to my framer about it when I take some more stuff in. It doesn't bother me massively, I only really see them cos it's at a right angle to the window.

Judgement Day on ripples, by Run Pig Run on Aug 14, 2007 17:40:06 GMT 1, I have found if you have had the print curled up in the tube and then take striaght from tube to frame it ripples. I always let the print unfurl over a few days and slowly begin to flatten it in an art sleeve. I have also have got the ripples out by rolling it back up placing it back in the tube for a week and then slowly flattened it out again.
I ain't no expept but I reckon it is usauly caused by a print not being sealed at the back, a print touching the glass or a dodgy acid backboard. also it seems in my experience the bigger the print the bigger the ripples. I guess the type of paper may come into somewhere along the line too.

You can hardly see them, but look closely at the top edge
The paper is hardly rippled at all, it's the halogen spots from the ceiling are making it look worse as they are causing a shadow where the paper is slightly away from the mount board.
My framer said when I took my J&J in to them (that had already been framed by Art Republic, I just took it in for them to match) that any slight rippling at the top was to be expected, it shows that the print has been mounted by a conservation method. They said if it got worse they should be able to improve it.

Judgement Day on ripples, by Andy'77 on Aug 15, 2007 10:43:24 GMT 1, That's pretty much what my JD looks like, although the mount is flat against the print at the top, the ripples seem to start a little below the mount. I think I only notice them because the window at right angles so I see a shadow on one side of each of the ripples, don't even see them in the evening as the lights souuce is straight infront of the print. Doesn't really bother me too much but I think if they got worse, I'd maybe see if my framer could sort them.

Judgement Day on ripples, by pastiepie on Aug 16, 2007 13:24:07 GMT 1, My Applause has exactly the same problem corblimeylimey. I assumed it was due to the conservation mounting as my eelus prints have some rippling but to a much lesser degree.
My other theory is that normally the pressure of glass onto the mount holds the print flat but with such a large frame it's impossible to have equal pressure across the entire print.
Is there any lasting damage? i.e. will they be rippled forever or will they be able to be flattened at a later date.

Judgement Day on ripples, by Curley on Aug 16, 2007 13:35:17 GMT 1, Same as guys, i had them redo my Applause but it happened again but its no where near as bad as it was originally. I can live with it.
The one in the Hospital show was terrible, huge ripples that you could see from the other side of the room due to the shadows. It looked so bad it was embarrassing really.

Judgement Day on ripples, by bristolmassive on Aug 16, 2007 14:55:09 GMT 1, i took my J&J back to the framers last week as it had a few ripples running vertically and horizontally against the mount. They did a really good job at removing them by packing a piece of acid free board between the print and the sealed back board. I presume this adds a little pressure to the print pushing it closer to the mount.
Looks sweet now.

Judgement Day on ripples, by Mobu on Sept 21, 2007 12:09:26 GMT 1, Yes, it all depends on whether the print itself has a little space to move within the print. I found after going to a bad framer which taped the top of my j&j that it started rippling quite badly.. its because the print could not move, which means the parts that could would ripple....
Usually weighing it down and re-framing it properly sort it out.
