Framers damaged prints..., by discoduster on Jan 5, 2008 10:20:43 GMT 1, Recently decided to use a large frame to flatten a large print that I was getting concerned about being in it's tube for too long.
Anyways, I carefully dismantle the frame to find the print stuck with tape either side. I thought it must be easy to remove tape but NO... starting to tear the print when I tried to get it off.
Feel like going into the framers and firing some fucks into them. I know I didn't ask for conservation standard but fuck me, he should of advised me the print would be wrecked.
Have had one valuable framed which is now bugging me knowing I'm gonna have a nightmare if I ever wanna remove it.
Anyone had any similar problems and can the tape be removed without damage?

Framers damaged prints..., by andrewd on Jan 5, 2008 20:46:44 GMT 1, Umm I've got some very nasty tape on the back of a very valuable print ( my fault!!) It's off to a paper restorer unless I can find a fail safe way of removing it myself. I'll give Bombshelters idea a go.

Try Fairclough Harrison in Bristol. They're specialist paper restorers, and did a great job on one of mine with tape on the back.

It was about £200. None of the damage was bad, but the print went from having some residual tape marks on the back, and having a very small scratch on the front, to looking absolutely 100% brand new. They also cleaned it.

Framers damaged prints..., by discoduster on Jan 5, 2008 22:08:01 GMT 1, Thanks guys!
I'd thought I'd found a really good local framer until this happened.
The print's really quite damaged on the one side but I'll try the damp cloth trick on the other side.

Framers damaged prints..., by discoduster on Jan 7, 2008 23:23:10 GMT 1, UPDATE>>>>
Used damp cloth and print is 80% free of tape.
Anyone attempting this make sure you give yourself a good hour without any distractions.
Be patient because if you have the same tape as I had the water runs straight off at first, it takes a good 10 minutes to start soaking in.
Take your time
