Framing prints without picture mounts help, by They call me Stephen on Apr 22, 2008 14:17:49 GMT 1, i've built up quite a collection of prints now and have decided it's time to get them on my walls, (the vast majority of them are currently living underneath my bed )
I really like framed prints where there is no picture mount surrounding the piece (ie: where the print is pretty much the same size as the frame)
I know its not advisable to have a print touching the glass so am wondering if there is anyway to achieve this look without damaging any of my prints. I am proposing to get my 'nicer' prints box framed but can't afford to do this for all of them.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
;D

Framing prints without picture mounts help, by slowmo on Apr 22, 2008 15:02:05 GMT 1, A framer will happily float mount and put spacers in the frame, they are not visible as they sit between the frame glass and the print, hidden by the frame. This separates the image from the glass without the need for a visible mount

Framing prints without picture mounts help, by mred on Apr 22, 2008 16:37:45 GMT 1, As slowmo says you can use a spacer to lift glass off the art, I was actually in my framers this morning as have an original which had frame same size as piece, i.e. no mount, but a spacer had not been used. Had been like that for a few years but had a bit of a panic attack at the weekend thinking when I took it out image would be left on the glass. Luckily this not the case but decided to sort it rather than risking something horrible happening in the future.
Was able to use existing frame, framer is just going to put spacer around edge of glass and replace board/mount behind piece. Quoted me £17 all in (frame 60cm by 75 cm) sounded a little expensive but went for it for piece if mind. Framer showed me spacer he was going to use, apparently stick it onto the glass which is made easy by fact it comes with one side which is self adhesive. Looks like possible DIY job although not sure where you buy this stuff from and how much it costs, thought about asking framer but decided against it as thought he might think I was being cheeky.

Framing prints without picture mounts help, by rosie on May 21, 2008 21:27:07 GMT 1, It is very inadvisable to use a spacer instead of a proper mount. All paper will move to a lesser or greater degree depending on the humidity. If your valuable print is trapped between the spacer and back board it cannot move naturally and hence may cause unnecessary tension on the paper. This in turn can cause the print to wrinkle or become distorted. An acid free mount really should be used as the artwork is hinged from the top only and therefore undue tension is avoided. If you relly must use a spacer make sure it is acid free but do be aware of the consequences. Rosie Armes Guild Commended Framer
