Portfolio/storage question, by uksnowman on Sept 2, 2008 15:19:34 GMT 1, Just bought a 2nd hand Daler Rowney A1 art portfolio (ring binder type) which came with a dozen or so plastic sleeves. It's pretty nice and new and much more practical than the homemade backing board archive I knocked together ages ago
I tried to find out if the sleeves were acid-free or not before buying, but no-one I spoke to (including an art shop dealing in those folders) had any idea. Does anyone know if the standard Daler Rowney sleeves are acid-free?
In case they aren't I don't mind placing acid-free tissue sheets on both sides of the print on a temporary basis. Anyone know if this would do the trick to protect the prints?

Portfolio/storage question, by uksnowman on Sept 2, 2008 19:41:39 GMT 1, Thanks, needed hawk eyes to see those The outside few didn't have any but 10 sheets in the middle had numbering : 801820100 and 5011385947700.
Quick search brought back this -
Daler-Rowney Essential Display Sleeve• Universally punched plastic pockets with Black acid free paper inserts perfect for protecting and displaying artwork, photographs etc• Size: A1."
So it seems the sleeves are just plastic and not acid-free but acid-free inserts can be used (I didn't get any inserts with the folder). Looks like I can get away with putting some on each side of the print. Will see if I can get some acid-free (mylar?) sleeves, they'd be much better than faffing around with inserts..

Portfolio/storage question, by uksnowman on Sept 4, 2008 23:25:32 GMT 1, I got an email earlier from Daler Rowney when I asked if the above A1 sleeves are acid-free. Here's the answer from their supplier
"We cannot say that our PVC is totally acid free. With modern analyzing equipment very small concentrations can be detected. We therefore say that traces of acid may be found."
Oh well Acid-free foam board seems to be the way forward. Has anyone found a good deal on this lately? Cheapest I could find was on papertsone.co.uk for £37.99 +vat for packs of 10 x 5mm (white).
Atlantis are good supposedly but their website isn't working too well..
