And then you have people that can't get anywhere close to buying one.

FS- Josh Keyes Originals, by lee3 on Aug 30, 2009 5:40:52 GMT 1, What's odd is that I believe i posted on this board or WK 4 or 5 months ago asking if anyone knew where the piece "scorch 1" was as it struck a chord in me as I'm an avid scuba diver. Thus my request above about anything with a shark, though admittedly it is common subject matter for this artist. pm sent
>>>Market on this guy is so strange <<<
To be fair, he's made a name for himself. I remember the days when $10k was an established mid career artist, but even after correction of the past year it *seems* reasonable to me. Admittedly I've only ever seen Keyes work and never a price tag associated with it.

It's a shame the above collection will be broken up, as it's really a nice selection of his works imo. Good luck with the sales (or purchases respectively) and thanks for sharing the images of course.

Admittedly I've only ever seen Keyes work and never a price tag associated with it. I wasn't criticizing Keyes or his career. But the way his work has been dispersed is a bit unusual and unfortunate side effect due to the euphoric mania surrounding some artists in this scene and the limited pool of 'hot' artists. I think those 10k paintings would actually be about 3-4k from his gallery which I think is reasonable. 10k for an 18x24 reasonable? Maybe, but I think perspectives are still warped. I think that would be reasonable in several years if his career continues to go well, and he gets in a few more museum shows etc.

Info from those much wiser than I said 4.5 to 5.5k for the 18x24. My point being they weren't unreasonable offering prices from my vantage point.
>>> 10k for an 18x24 reasonable? Maybe, but I think perspectives are still warped<<<
I think all of our perspectives are warped given what we pay for pictures that we don't need. At that price level, you buy it because you love it no more no less. Seller seems like a good person and informed collector from the little banter we had back and forth. I lost out on Scorch to someone willing to pay more than I but such is life. Another bus will come around in 10 minutes...

FS- Josh Keyes Originals, by snausages on Aug 30, 2009 22:38:18 GMT 1, As of Jan 2008 (about the time the 2nd painting was sold) an 18x24 inch painting was $2400, according to Josh Keyes himself. I know prices went up since then and my memory isn't perfect but I really don't think as high as 5.5k. Link: urbanartassociation.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=ebaychat&thread=11906&page=1
As for what you pay for something, it's up to you, it's extremely hard to quantify these things when emotion gets involved, but as a guide the only rationale thing you can really go on is what other similarly accomplished artists sell for. And for 10k, you could get a painting of about the same size by say for one quick example Marcel Dzama who has a list of museum exhibitions and major acquisitions a mile long. Keyes pales in comparison so far.
It's just very hard to understand why the mania started around Keyes, he certainly has talent, I mean no disrespect, but it's a bit off kilter and this thing just snowballs as it has around a couple of 'chosen' artists in the scene for reasons that no one can probably fully quantify.

david b smith does a fantastic job of dealing with the demand and honestly i think by now everyone knows if you purchase from gallery an original obviously you are going to be higher up than anyone else joining a waiting list...
what i find most interesting is josh keyes is going to be here for a long time and im looking forward to fingers crossed a night time series because i think be so beautiful to look at...
with josh he wasnt trying to gain exposure from last year and how crazy things got... he just honestly produced art pieces what he thought was right and out of the many artists i speak too he really is someone that has important message to say in his art pieces..
weird how over the internet you can call someone your friend but Josh happy to say is one... 2010 i am hoping own view BRP and josh can do something special because i know it will be a great success.... rizza wish you the best for the sale and gutted missed out on the scorched as something i really wanted and my old man also...
heres too fingers crossed uk show for josh keyes next year or two in the uk ....s

Or you might be able to land a hand signed print from thomas kincade, the famous painter of light. Who's to say who was right or wrong from a purchasing standpoint- us art snobs? I had a friend email me a similar comparison citing museum exhibitions and CV lengths for other artists at that price point. My reply was that I didn't care who painted scorch or what their resume looks like, i just liked the image for art's sake. At the end of the day, you buy art because you love it and want it in your home. To me, anything sub 10k is priced like decorative art (just price, not commenting on the merit of the art itself) and therefore highly speculative so you better love whatever you're buying at that level.

It is art for heart's sake. It just so happens that the artist is extremely talented and visionary.

FS- Josh Keyes Originals, by spenie1975 on Aug 30, 2009 23:10:38 GMT 1, Two very nice pieces sold. Would have jumped at Scorch when originally sold, really surprised that these sold for $10,000 in this climate. I know Keyes originals come on the market few and far between and if I could afford to I would love to pay these prices as I think Josh will be far bigger in the next few years. These may seem like a bargain 2 years down the line.
