DO NOT give your work away for a paste-up wall, by PamGlew on Sept 28, 2009 19:32:56 GMT 1, Hereโs something Iโm trying to spread around, so that no one else gets shafted!...... (please forward to all artists!)
I recently gave some work on paper to a chap who i will call 'DODGYTHINGDAVE' He has pics of this wall on flickr and it has all kinds of street/ urban paste-ups that he has presumably got donated by the artists!
And lo and behold, yesterday I noticed that all the work I gave him.......... was sold on ebay!
And he has other paste-ups for sale which looks suspiciously like donated works
The only thing I can do is warn all artists to not do the same, Donโt send him your tests, prints, paste-ups or any free stuff! He has so far sold 121 things in his god-forsaken ebay shop, its amazing the audacity of it!
Please forward to all artist mates, the guy needs blacklisting (and duffing up a bit)
Best wishes and hereโs to not getting shafted!
x pam

DO NOT give your work away for a paste-up wall, by raiden on Sept 29, 2009 20:56:23 GMT 1, Hey Pam,
I saw that auction. The upside was that it was a pretty decent result.
So how did this whole thing play out? What made you send him the pieces? Was he offering to paste them up?
But such crap that someone did that. Honestly, any decent collector won't beg for work for free, and wont' take it anyways - except if its a gift from a friend. I always feel weird about taking work from any artist for free - and even then would never dare sell it.
Anyone raised right won't seek charity. When I lost my job suddenly and had to pull out of a deal with European Bob to buy a canvas of 'Lunacy,' he offered me free test sprays and I never replied back because I just wouldn't take it. I don't want to be a charity case. I'd rather work to get the money to go back to him and buy something bigger and better than before.
On the other hand, you have to wonder why someone is posing as a charity case? I hope that he really is trying to make ends meet, as I was there just a few months ago. I sincerely hope he wasn't just being a greedy jerk, but it would be nice to find out that perhaps he really was a charity case.
Though I do wish you'd at least get your artist resale rights share!! Damn Ebay!
Don't beat yourself up about it. It seems plenty of people made this mistake and its common for overzealous collectors and resalers to seek out freebies - I'm sure every artist with any collectibility has a story.
Hopefully good karma will come your way - as good deeds still are rewarded and every bad deed gets punished. Ultimately, its a drop in the bucket compared to how you may do over your very promising career as an artist.
And you never know how these things can wind up. Often there are unintended upsides when we're victim of a wrong. For all we know, the buyer of the Ebay auction may have discovered your work from this sale and will buy more from you in the future. I know I first found Eelus several years ago when I looked up Banksy on Ebay. Never can tell the unintended consequences.
But at the end of the day...
If it makes you feel any better, I love the 5 pieces of yours I bought a while back on Etsy (back almost a year ago when I had money and a job!) - they're framed up beautifully. And greatly enjoyed your show at Carmichael recently. I was hoping you'd be out for it. Plus, I really love the new work (I don't want to say that too loud as I'm hoping they'll still be around when I can afford them properly)
Best,
-R
