Agreed! It blows my previous contenders out of the water! I don't think there's even any competition IMO. And I put my pipe down years ago! ;D

Couldn't agree more mate. I actually think there have been very few inspirational images printed by street/urban artists this year, less than a handful so far IMO. Other than this and a Kinsey release I'm struggling to think of any. There have been a few others I've liked a lot, but not really from this genre (I'm thinking of McCarthy, Danger and Chueh).

David Choe • Jimi Hendrix , by Heavyconsumer on Jun 27, 2009 21:26:41 GMT 1, Choe's style and Hendrix's image collide in this piece and the result is an explosion of energy, motion and colour. I see where you're coming from and you make a valid point, but sometimes the oldest of themes can blossom with new life again and for me that's what's happening here.
It's vibrant in the extreme and captures the musician's energy, at the same as beautifully show-casing Choe's filthy style. This should not be written off as run of the mill due to the theme imo. I do see where you're coming from to an extent, but I'd say that it's an artist's enthusiasm, honesty and love for their work that makes it authentic and inspirational to view and that's all pretty evident here imo.
And goddamit it looks like Jimi's gonna jump right off that paper and start rocking in the living room!!! Gotta find me one of these babies, I'll burn the sofa or TV to make room for it!;D Although I'd expect any that make it to ebay to cost a pretty penny.

What a silly comment! It's a piece of art by Choe, if you're not into his style in general or this image, that's totally understandable, but how would one of those posters be a direct replacement for someone interested in a huge, beautiful example of Choe's work? Seriously, what happened to the gallery employee happy to share a fascinating knowledge of art? Has he been sharing his log-in password with Bert and Ernie?

David Choe • Jimi Hendrix , by snausages on Jun 28, 2009 15:33:35 GMT 1, Defensive about Choe eh? If you want a "beautiful example of Choe's work" I'd suggest getting something that's a bit more indicative (iconic) of what he normally does, you know tits, ass, dicks and va***a and whatever else he paints. City Girl maybe?
It's a painting of a celebrity rock god that says nothing, just like hundreds of other posters before it. It seriously is a theme that's been milked over and over, it's practically pointless except unless you want a poster of hendrix on your wall. And if that's what you want, I'd still strongly suggest getting a Rick Griffin or Osiris poster instead.
Choe's is definitely better than this, he's obviously got talent, but conceptually speaking, it's really no better and little different than this crazy $10 psychedelic poster.
but it is amazing that Hendrix was able to join the army, leave the army, play the chitlin circuit down south, get used and screwed a few times before finally landing a real deal and recording 4-5 of the best albums ever made all by the age of 27.

But if it was a commission that's cool, and maybe explains the issue — but really didn't need to be a poster.

Amen to your comments on Jimi. And no, it's not that I'm defensive of Choe as such, but I have read enough of your previous posts to know that you were selling yourself, the forum and the art short. It's all horses for courses and while it's difficult to argue too many of your reasoned points, it's nice to read them when you do make them. I have no wish for all of us to think the same way or enjoy the same art.
The word poster is being used in this thread as if it's derogatory! I don't see why, as there's some beautiful poster art out there! I've been taking notice of some of it in EB in recent months and not only is some of it very nice work, but it also has a BIG collector base and there's def' an economical framework attached to the limited edition posters, akin to any other collectable art form.
I have no problem with this being classed as a poster if need be, but don't see, bearing in mind how this piece of Hendrix homage came about, why it should necessarily become the focus of an argument about artistic concept and be compared to open edition $10 prints. Funnily enough, I think you could probably deconstruct a lot of Choe's work conceptually if you wanted anyway.
There are 27 of these, of which only 19 (maximum) were available for purchase and it's an image by an artist with a following in here, so it seems reasonable for paople to accept it for what it is, whatever you want to call it, poster/print it's not important imo. I dig Choe's style, I dig Jimi's music and I dig this poster. And I have to say that I think if you compare this original painting or print to much of his other work, they stand on their own 2 feet. Incidentally, there are plenty of much less rare posters which sell for a great deal more than $600.
