Mr Brainwash soup cans, by only1rara on Sept 10, 2009 17:42:23 GMT 1, Sorry but so what if the subject has been done time and time again by different artists! The MBW piece was completely unique up close. Skulls have been done to death (no pun intended) but I would still want to see individual artists interpretation.

Mr Brainwash soup cans, by snausages on Sept 10, 2009 18:20:06 GMT 1, surely no-ones saying that MBW likes to use other peoples ideas?! =] Of course he does, that's his shtick. But how would MBW here be different than Shepard Fairey stealing Mr Spray from an old illustrated advertisement (for just one of many examples.) Why is it tolerated when some people rip off but not others?

i agree with you snausages, there is a strong element of hypocracy & not just on here either and not just regarding Brainwash. i'm just a believer in 'you like what you like' and if you prefer a gagnon soup spraycan to a brainwash great, if you hate both great, if you love both....you can see where this is going!
it is somewhat paradoxical that people apply a high art pretention surrounding the idea of appropriation in art to street/graffiti art, which couldn't be further away from high art - no one can be original.

gutted when i found out he'd used all those preexisting images, especially as id just read supply and demand at the time and there's hardly any mention of sources. Does anybody know was 'proud parents' lifted from anywhere? its my only shep and my favourite shep so Im clinging to the hope that its an original image...

Are you people crazy? There is a vast difference between Shepard Fairey taking, and subverting, an existing image or advert and someone (maybe Mr Brainwash) just copying something.
And Yep, of course the "Proud Parents" parents have been taken from an old image, and their baby replaced with a bomb. Good idea, and one Banksy's done too... in exactly the same way.

Spot on HS! And this applies to many, many more wannabes. So many of them milking the cow without even trying to make some effort, or bringing some new fresh ideas on the table. Sure everyone is taking some inspiration from another to some degree but enough is enough please. Boring, Boring, Boring!

do you not think though we have just been over exposed to the cult of celebrity to such an extent that an image of a so-called 'celebrity' does seem boring? We are not familiar on a large scale of propaganda artwork therefore we do not know whether Obey has merely copied an image or 'subverted' it and possibly enhanced it.
Maybe in the former communist states where the style of poster is very much like Obey's, when they have seen his work, they think 'same old - 'that's a complete rip-off' boring, boring, boring.

ah no, im not saying they're the same. I still have respect for shep as hes so prolific on the street, not to mention all the causes he supports. Brainwash I am not a fan of. Of course people reference other images, the worlds a better place for it, i do it myself! but SOME of sheps stuff has been directly lifted with nothing substantial being altered, simply OBEY or a border added, I was hoping with proud parents that wasn't the case and perhaps, like you said, the bomb was slotted in... or something, subverting the image- which is the point.
this article is very biased against shep but it does illustrate some examples where he's been rather quick to recycle images without nods to a source or significantly changing anything www.art-for-a-change.com/Obey/index.htm
and no im not crazy, the pills took care of that
