Mr. Brainwash, Banksy's protege?, by eddiedangerous on May 11, 2009 9:55:50 GMT 1, fuck me. just wasted time looking over the mbw site for the first time. and what a waste of time.
might as well have walked into one of those shops that scan their shit photoshop images onto canvas. jimi hendrix, elvis presley, spok, the beatles and more einesteins than i care to count.
for fucks sake
what next al pacino in scarface, why not do the entire star wars cast, havent seen much street art of dynasty or maybe dallas, how about twin peaks that was "cult" wasnt it, and can i put my name down now for when you do tarrantino when the new film is out. stylistically its all over the place to the point there is no coherant style, its like a 16 yr old looking round to find a style. Love him or loathe him at least Cartrain has his own style ffs.
this isnt art. its not even athena.
this is simply shoddy and shit work, but the edition sizes he is selling out. 300's 500's... Jeez.
has the whole world gone mad or is it just the americans buying this lackluster wank?
[rant over...but not in my head]

Mr. Brainwash, Banksy's protege?, by dynamixx on May 11, 2009 11:17:28 GMT 1, Eddie = nail on the head.
I think we're entering silly season. Banksy needs to do something new ASAP before the madness really descends!
In the meantime, I'll start things off: with some new debates -The handles on Bethlehem Trolleys - Hand painted or not? -Is Nick Walker really Banksy? -Will prices drop so low we'll all be setting fire to our prints just to keep warm this winter? -Will Sale Ends or Festival be released soon?
Most importantly -BONGO and mammal leave the forum and Banksy turns equally quiet - coincidence?

Mr. Brainwash, Banksy's protege?, by thegreatarchitect on May 11, 2009 12:58:05 GMT 1, First, newbie.... please look up the myriad of posts about MBW that have been put up. Info about what is known has been explained pretty throughly. To reiterate as quickly as possible: At Seth Carmichael's Bonham's event that Shep spoke at, Shep made a point of clarifying things about Mr Brainwash - namely that he was a documentary film maker and a hanger on who used his contacts, partly as a relative of Invader (I believe his cousin), to get access to Shep and other people in the urban art scene. Shep supposedly introduced him to Banksy. Thierry never finished the film as he started getting into urban art. He's been an urban artist in Los Angeles for years... I put up a picture on this board of early work of MBWs dating back to at least 2006... and according to my hazy recollection, I think I saw crappy early street work well before that. Because he had actual footage of Banksy's face and because he was just sitting on it, doing nothing with it... according to Shep, Banksy bought the footage back in exchange for doing something for Thierry (and partly because Banksy was frustrated with Thierry)... Shep seemed to suggest at the Carmichael event that Banksy intended to finish the film for Thierry and implied that the film would take a turn of showcasing Thierry as little talent documentary filmmaker, turned artist. According to MBW, Banksy told Thierry a basic plan of how to become a (successful?) street artist. Thierry shows this sheet of notes in his interview with Carson Daily. The speculation is that MBW is a project of Bansky's. That is not 100% factual by any means, as all evidence suggests he produced work well before he met with Banksy, much of that work was consistent with a low level street artists trying to find his style (complete with oversprays and all in the same area of LA), and the narrative I've heard from other sources suggests he was dabbling with graf art well before the supposed "Banksy" meeting - a meeting taht seems to have been completely overblown by art speculators and gossip. Thierry supposedly has a lot of family wealth and even prior to becoming aware of him as one and the same with MBW, I would see him hanging out with Mark the Cobrasnake and DJ Steve Aoki - basically behaving as your typical rich, trust fund, wannabe art scene guy. He used his personal wealth to finance his art career and leveraged his contacts that he made partly as a rich kid and partly as a hanger on to launch his show in LA in which he went from a largely unheard of, largely ignored low level graf artist to an overnight "success." But factually, his "Life Is Beautiful" show employed a slew of hired artists that produced most of the work for MBW and he hired many of the same show producers who helped get Banksy's 2006 LA show off the ground. In essence, many people in the LA art community allege that MBW went so far as farming out some of the conceptualization of his work. And might I also add, that much of the work in the Mr Brainwash "Life is Beautiful" show was more or less copied from other artists, including his vinyl record art (which could be found being done by outsider artists at flea markets), his almost direct copying of Rene Gagnon with the Campbells Spraycan Images, his modernization of old paintings (which was practically directly copied from Banksy), and a slew of other images. ***** In summary, my conclusions are that Thierry is a rich guy who has very good publicists and contacts and very little actual talent - and I'm not alone in my conclusion this way. I strongly believe (keyword believe) that Banksy shares this opinion but chose to help Thierry because: 1) He wanted the footage back 2) Has (or had) a cynical view of the urban art world and felt that the best ending for this supposed documentary would be showing that Thierry could easily become an urban artist in his own right (although not necessarily a talented one) 3) Thierry really is an unbelievably nice guy I would easily bet a Miss Bugs print that Banksy had nothing to do with the creation of any of MBW's work beyond referring staff from his 2006 LA show. MBW is a joke, but only in the sense that 95% of his work is total crap and yet you idiots (or Moron's) still buy it, and the other 5% isn't worth the price he's selling it at. I think even Banksy is laughing that a no talent Frenchmen who can't really paint has somehow gotten this big. He is not a "joke" in the sense he is a Tony Clifton figure or a manufactured entity of any other artist. No, MBW is not Banksy. Not at all. Not in any sense. They are 100% separate people. And no, they do not produce each others work. I repeat, NO, don't buy MBW thinking you're buying a Banksy, you're not. So rid yourself of that ridiculous accusation as well. Enough naive art collectors wasted too much money on inferior work because of that silly rumor which plenty of publicly available evidence disproves. (For starters, the fact we have pretty credible pictures of both producing work) At best, MBW will be remembered as the Steve Kaufman of the urban art world, a hopeless imitator. Look him up... you'll agree its a pretty good parallel. I personally wouldn't own a Steve Kaufman because I think he's just a poor man's Warhol (and his work doesn't retain its value). I don't own MBW because I think he's a poor man's (but high priced) Bansky, an imitator and not originator, and his work won't retain its value. At worst, I've made the point MBW will be the urban art equivalent of Thomas Kinkade - and with the frequency MBW is churning out work and the amount of misinformation that's fueling MBWs market, its not a bad parallel. ***** I'm going to book mark this entry finally so I can just refer everyone to it every three months when some hopelessly retarded newbie to the urban art scene posts some inane question about MBW. dummy
Typical comment likely to come from someone who collects illustrative work that parallels Wendel's Workshop You should check out The GIDDY GOAT by Jamie Rix. Cadealaw

Now you're just grasping at straws. So your idea of a retort is to make up a complete fiction? Frankly, I had to look up both "Wendel's Workshop" and "The Giddy Goat." Your mother still read those to you before you fall asleep every night in your race car bed or something?
Artists that are currently up in my office: Shepard Fairey, Eelus original, Insect 1/1, Blek Le Rat (a very large AP that looks good on my wall) The house has a wider variety, including some pop surrealists, a number of unknown artists, and even a Mr Brainwash "Life Is Beautiful" along an Obey Giant from 2000.
So no, I don't own any illustration art, though I'd rather have a Maurice Sendak original than a MBW original ... particularly to decorate the eventual kids room with.

Mr. Brainwash, Banksy's protege?, by cadeallaw on May 12, 2009 17:33:18 GMT 1, Hey everybody... pay attention to ME!!! Look what I'm doing everyone!!!
Greatarchitect-
You suck at life. You seem to add absolutely nothing of any worth to this forum and the only time I see you post, it usually is to pointlessly criticize another artist without any sort of logical thought- Example: urbanartassociation.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=33235&page=2
also... 1. I didn't delete a post or try to infer that you said something that you didn't- you do a pretty good job of making yourself look like a jackass on a regular basis without my help. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you just missed what you were looking for because you are a dullard. Although I disagree with a lot of what he says, I have to commend Raiden for actually thinking about what he writes prior to posting, whereas the same can't be said for you. Based on the frequent incoherent nature of your posts, i'm assuming that one of your hobbies includes sniffing glue and posting on the internet.
2. Cowardice? Come on... it's the internet. ;D At this point, i'd like to reiterate that you do in fact suck at life.
It seems that you have way too much time on your hands thus I'd recommend maybe seeking out employment- I'm guessing that if you currently are employed, your biggest responsibility is cleaning out the 'Macho Nacho' machine prior to shift change. Maybe you should look for something a little more challenging so you have less time to incoherently ramble on the interwebz.
Raiden- Will response to your previous post when I have more time. Your response will take a little more time/thought to construct.

Mr. Brainwash, Banksy's protege?, by snausages on May 13, 2009 22:45:40 GMT 1, Thanks for the well composed response Raiden. It's nice not to resort to personal jabs even if we don't share the same opinions on artists.
While I don't agree with everything you say I do agree with some. But I do feel by your phrasing and set up you're opinion is biased at times and more on personal issues than artistic issues. Sometimes you make very valid points but it seems like your personal opinions on the person MBW at times gets you off track from making a valid argument about the art of MBW. But maybe it's fair enough that personal opinion is involved?
Anyway, I don't know him or his work very intimately so I don't have much more to say.
But as for saying he had Panache, well it's opinion, but I did qualify that by saying he had more panache than most artists in this scene. Which may not be saying much. And I didn't realize there was so much of a mystique about him. It's fair enough to bring up personal wealth if that may be financing the hype and media awareness but that stuff usually wears out on its own. I still think criticizing him for being a 'hipster' seems like a weak cheap shot and makes it look like your looking for any excuse to criticize the guy.
I agree that I think the Duchamp Urinal was brilliant. And I think his reworking of Warhol's Marilyn, ala Banksy was also, well maybe not brilliant but pretty smart and funny. Banksy's Kate Moss is a subtle and wry play on Warhol's Marilyn. There's been other takes on it as well but have to say I think MBWs play off it added something to the story, and took it to the next step, unlike so many other artists who 'reference' Warhol to put in the most polite terms.
There's a few other MBW works I've seen that I've liked but I will agree a lot of it is very bad. His new prints pointed out on this thread are atrocious. So did he have a creative director help him out for his show? Is it that he's producing so much work that there might be a few gems? Time will probably tell. But I suppose I feel that his best work was so far above some of the other artists you referenced and for that I gave him the benefit of the doubt. While some of his work is crap, there is still a fair amount that has a lot of thought and concept put into it. I personally feel that some of the artists you've referenced show little conceptual thought or threads throughout their work. I see so much work in this genre that is just flash, cool and slick visuals with no real thought or meaning that I give MBW credit for having a concept behind his work.
But I can certainly understand peoples negative reaction to it. That was my initial reaction to MBW, and still is for most of his work.

Mr. Brainwash, Banksy's protege?, by snausages on May 13, 2009 23:06:55 GMT 1, If you like it, Buy it ;D If you dunt, dont! ;D Buy what you like? I do have a collector friend who likes to buy art simply based on visceral reaction and how much it resonates with him. That stuff definitely informs my opinion but call me a nerd I also like to add to that opinion based on the thought concept and intelligence put into the art and think it's worth discussing.

Mr. Brainwash, Banksy's protege?, by swavala on May 14, 2009 7:24:00 GMT 1, Ummm, I think that maybe the joke is on all of you.
You can't buy this kind of publicity! You guys just don't get it...
Even the people that hate him are writing lengthy diatribes about the whole thing. Hilarious! He's from LA, where even the "bad" publicity is good. People thrive on this shit!

Mr. Brainwash, Banksy's protege?, by thegreatarchitect on May 14, 2009 15:29:09 GMT 1, Hey everybody... pay attention to ME!!! Look what I'm doing everyone!!! Greatarchitect- You suck at life. You seem to add absolutely nothing of any worth to this forum and the only time I see you post, it usually is to pointlessly criticize another artist without any sort of logical thought- Example: urbanartassociation.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=33235&page=2also...
Well it looks as if i walked into that one. Your comments though well constructed Cadealaw consist of little more than assumptions based on a collection of ill assorted impressions that you have cobbled together through the huge gaps in your understanding. which clearly shows itself due largely to an immaturity of thinking and a lack of pertinent information and you have let speculative fantasies formulate in your own reality and have unfortunately concrefied these segments as facts. You were given the opportunity to enlighten me with more of your wonderful connotations involving my insecurities being a result my mothers refusal to let me suckle on her tit , and open up a whole feast of understandings for me but unfortunately your flawed assumptions leave me with the impression that you often stand with your index finger twiddling the insides of your underpants while you ponder on how to respond and try to evaluate the merits of your wild assumptions I had good reason to put that jumped up pantry boy back in his place (GRAFTER) and for you to jump in with your ambiguities around how i should go kill myself was hardly relevant and again showed every sign of an immature mind i do hope i have been able to clarify things for you do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like help with buying some good artworks
