Damien Hirst Butterfly Prints, by dkla on Mar 4, 2009 20:04:59 GMT 1, Just to clarify for everyone, the edition of 45 is a unique edition: it's landscape with the background with real gold leaf.
I guess it's confusing on Other Criteria, maybe they need to make that more clear.
Here's what they're selling:
Gold Leaf version landscape: edition of 45
Gold glitter vertical, bronze glitter vertical, bronze glitter landscape, Silver vertical, and silver landscape: editions of 150
Does that help?

horses for courses i guess. Sure its a belter in real life, will have a look in Other Criteria on the walk home.

Damien Hirst Butterfly Prints, by thegreatarchitect on Mar 4, 2009 20:12:46 GMT 1, i like hirst very much - but sometimes, when it reeks of money - it gives me a sense of "emperor's new clothes" vibe. like, hirst and his supporters would say "hey, this is a pictures of 9 spots, and it's a masterpiece, and you have to be really, really smart like us to see its true beauty" - and you like, er...ok, ok! i see it, it's beautiful, wow, spots! wow the context vs concept brilliantly juxtaposed - then you like, wait a minute... i think i've been had - then he's like, yeah, don't you see? it's the emperor's new clothes thingy, being "con" is part of the context vs concept jux, THAT is the beauty - and you like, erm.. ok, and he's like "now hand over the money" and you like, ok, here you go... so he goes away richer, and you go home with a picture of spots, and he's like thinking about selling another 50 versions of spots in edition of 150 at 2000 pounds each, and you like wish he'd die sooner, so the value of this masterpiece can skyrocket... saying all that, I still really, really like Hirst - i think he is this generation's Picasso because he is the most relevant and fun.
Hirst is no Picasso,Hirst loves money nothing more than that He now consistently regurgitates tired tired out old themes hidden behind a vail of conceptual bullshit.

the spots are more iconography than anything else, and aside from the pickled animals, his most recognised work, but there is just something about them that makes me want one

Damien Hirst Butterfly Prints, by dkla on Mar 5, 2009 2:52:12 GMT 1, Not that it's any of my business graeme501, but I would venture that now would be a good time to buy this new spots edition if you like them and are considering. The prices will only get much worse as they sell out. Look at the increases both of the the silvers (about 1,000 GBP) and gold landscape (about 2,000 GBP) have taken since the first allocation sold.
The first one to sell out completely will be the edition of 45 obviously, and right now it is still underpriced relative to his other editioned works/edition sizes. Both of the bronze editions of 150 are a value for a Hirst spots and an easier entrรฉe. The silver sits right in the middle, I guess.
Overall these images have earned their place in art history and I really like the look of these new metallic background versions, thus my taking the plunge and buying one of them. I used to like them on white of course, too. But I like what the metallic adds to the images and the prices are still good (for Hirst spots and any Hirst edition for that matter). Now I feel like a salesman.

I think you may be right there Wizbong. But Hirst has told this joke before. Conceptual Art at its best is where the relationship between the ordinary and the mundane link well with the complexity of the concept, but the concept is never explained and gets us to believe that the high price is a reflection of its ability to achieve that marriage between the ordinary object and complex concept And thats where Hirst is being clever

Damien Hirst Butterfly Prints, by thegreatarchitect on Mar 5, 2009 13:03:52 GMT 1, Please don't get me wrong Wiz bong, My complaint about the Vail of Bullshit is mealy a reflection of the silly money that his work commands that far outstrips any merit the work may contain. Overall I don't dislike some of it, but its all become a bit of a conveyor belt money making machine hiding behind the apron strings of Duchamp. Prints for the pedestrian squirted out like ice cream tubs found at the local supermarket

Damien Hirst Butterfly Prints, by sashaz on Apr 1, 2009 0:34:30 GMT 1, you know i would love some of this stuf but the way he has mass produced it and made it so "available" has kind off put me off. The original spots were rare (or seemed to be) but now its like shopping at amazon.
the butterflies still tempt me having ranted though (so do the spots as someone said "to confirm my shallowness".

The original spots editions through Eyestorm weren't more rare, they were much larger editions (500 of each I believe).
I know some forum members who've bought the silver one -- I hope they post pics of it framed soon.
I'll be sure to post pics of my Gold Thioglucose once I get it framed up and on the wall. ;D

Damien Hirst Butterfly Prints, by sashaz on Apr 20, 2009 0:16:12 GMT 1, I "confimed my shallowness" and put my name down for the gold glitter spots. Went to the store and after looking at all the prints I actually liked that one the most. I would never have thought of getting that one from the website but it is really nice in real life. I will give photos when i get it framed and up.
Its amazing how all prints look so different in real life. Many warhol ones dont look that great but when you see them in real life and see the quality and colour then even alot of the most mundane ones look a million times better.
my fiance loves the butterfly hirst print and was very tempted to get one for herself.
