Customs Question For US members, by yankeebankee on Dec 11, 2009 22:56:36 GMT 1, I would appreciate anyone's experiences...I have just received a framed print from overseas that was put on 'Hold' by US customs. Prints are categorized in a duty-free code so that wasn't the cause and it wasn't inspected. The end result was that I had to pay a brokerage fee to release it.
Has anyone experienced this before?

Customs Question For US members, by yankeebankee on Dec 12, 2009 16:04:08 GMT 1, Thanks for the info - makes me feel more comfortable about giving my cc details over the phone to get it released - sorry to hear you also had to pay the brokerage fee for no reason....nice 'add-on' $'s for the forwarders though!!

Customs Question For US members, by chive on Dec 13, 2009 13:19:15 GMT 1, always avoid ups, they are the worst for brokerage fee's and they are always put on. use fedex/dhl/royal mail. most of the time they will slip through with no duty.

Customs Question For US members, by danno on Dec 13, 2009 17:52:08 GMT 1, I work at the United States Postal Service, honestly in my 14 years there I have seen a grand total of 2 parcels inbound that have went through an actual customs inspection and surcharge.
Both times the recipient was very unhappy and I didnt even know what to tell them about the surcharge. I remember the one time a person was being charged something like a $43 tax for a $20 shirt. Both times customs also did a fantastic job of repacking the box, they must have monkeys that do that for them.
If it was opened and inspected there will be no doubt. It will have yellow tape all over it explaining that it has been opened, inspected and repacked by a gorilla named Bob.
I would have never given any cc info over the phone. If it is coming through USPS, we collect on delivery period! If it is coming through us, please call your cc company asap!
I cannot speak for UPS and all the others.

Customs Question For US members, by danno on Dec 13, 2009 17:54:55 GMT 1, Oh I might add if it is of any help, I can get into the USPS intraweb at work, basically it will be the same thing that USPS.com says, but sometimes it will give a very minor amount of more details then is generally available on the public site. If I can be of any help, just yell.

Customs Question For US members, by yankeebankee on Dec 14, 2009 1:11:38 GMT 1, Danno, appreciate the offer...I have received several print from the UK using Royal Mail/USPS combo alsways without an issue. The sender chose to go for TNT so I am at their mercy....they charged me $100 brokerage fee to get it released but it still shows in customs. I guess it's a good learning experience!! Fingers crossed it is release Monday. Thanks again.

Customs Question For US members, by sugarcane on Dec 14, 2009 3:55:10 GMT 1, I have twice been dinged - both by FedEx. Each time was around $35. Both times they were fully insured items over 3K.
