Banksy V Damien Hirst, by Rude Copper on Jan 11, 2008 20:59:37 GMT 1, banksy & hirst have been mates for ages, well known that hirst has been buying his work for a long time, he was the first to buy lenin on rollerskates back in the day. there were also rumours of hirst & banksy doing shows together this year, whether this painting is the total nett result of that, i dont know. massive coup on banksy's part, one of hirst's best known concepts vs one of banksy's best grafitti pieces 10ft x 7ft, for charity+ huge publicity a million pound painting perhaps?

Banksy V Damien Hirst, by Rude Copper on Jan 11, 2008 21:00:52 GMT 1, i think Banksy 'gets' Hirst. Have you ever walked in Laz's office? There's Hirsts everywhere. If this is a collaboration then it's a city boy's wet dream and will sell for a hell of a lot of money, which is the plan I'm guessing.
its definetely a bonafide collabotation.

Banksy V Damien Hirst, by sausageboonwee on Jan 12, 2008 9:38:06 GMT 1, A year or two ago I emailed Bob Geldof's company with the suggestion he should contact Bono regarding an idea I had for the Red campaign. My idea was that the World's top artists produced art with a red theme. This work could then be auctioned for charity at an auction in New York. I'm not saying this is definitely a result of my email but it is a slight coincidence. Interesting to see if Geldof is there taking the credit!

Banksy V Damien Hirst, by afroken on Jan 12, 2008 14:17:02 GMT 1, I'll just take lots 6,17 and 38. they can keep the Banksy's ;D
I'm beginning to agree. The more I look at that Banksy / Hirst piece, the more vulgar it looks. I am a big fan of Hirst but the dots have come to signify greed to me. They are the de facto thing to have on your wall if you've got too much new money. Banksy has been going that way a bit too in the last year, so together they've created an icon of vulgarity, greed and, ironically, capitalism.
I can see the buyer cracking open a 19th century bottle of Chateau Lafite and flying in an ounce of Colombian coke to celebrate their new purchase. A bit depressing really

What the fffff.... heck....? Like anyone here will be able to afford it anyway...

Banksy V Damien Hirst, by ejvaze on Jan 14, 2008 0:59:48 GMT 1, There was a thread on here about artists working together, but.... Check out the 'Red Auction' at Sothebys.
This has been done as afroken has already said for the RED auction at Sothebys on Valentines day.
Sothebys in NY has organised this with the Gagosian Gallery in Chelsea, U2โs Bono and Damien Hirst .
The proceeds of the auction with works all inspired by the color red, will go to the United Nations Foundation to help various HIV/AIDS relief programs in Africa.
The Banksy Maid was as I understood all about the sweeping of the HIV/AIDS subject under the carpet by the West so is The perfect Banksy image for this auction. As for the Hirst background I am not sure why. Would be nice if it was a Hirst piece and collaboration. As Hirst is so involved with this auction it must be some sort of comment. Mr B never does anything without a meaning/reason
By the way I really like this. If I could afford it I would bid on it. It could kill 2 birds with one stone as far as I am concerned. The ownership of an original Banksy something I have always wanted and maybe Hirst...... fantastic.
As to what type of person may or may not buy this piece it really doesn't matter to me or I am sure Banksy who like me would only be interested in the maximum amount of money being raised from it's sale for this charity. So if some pinstripped city boy wants to spend this yrs bonus on it well that's fine by me, just so long as it raises a massive amount for the charity.
I am sure the background has been used to optimize the maximum bid and money for the charity.
Here's a link re info on the auction, RED www.artdaily.com/indexv5.asp?int_sec=11&int_new=22537

Banksy V Damien Hirst, by sjh on Jan 16, 2008 17:45:42 GMT 1, I hope it raises loads of cash for charity but I personally think it cheapens both artists and is a "collaboration" that just doesn't work.
It feels forced rather than complimentary.
Strikes me as a lazy way of generating publicity for both (obviously for a good cause, so no bad thing, and by two artists that will be with us for a very long time to come.)

Banksy V Damien Hirst, by Dead Elvis on Jan 18, 2008 2:02:35 GMT 1, On a semi-related note, last weekend I checked out the Hirst exhibit at the Goss-Michael Foundation here in Dallas. While the paintings were a bit of a yawn, I do have to say the Saint Sebastian, Exquisite Pain sculpture was quite stunning/breath-taking. I vowed not to post any photos of the works I took with my pro-bodied SLR, per Damien's request...I supose a little thumbnail wouldn't hurt ...sunlight pouring through the formaldehyde...

Then I'd be able to see it every day if I wanted
