Banksy V Damien Hirst, by bill on Jan 18, 2008 3:39:33 GMT 1, Wasn't it the Tate that is very short on money to make any acquisitions right now. If I do recall correctly Hirst just donated a couple of paintings to them because they couldn't afford to buy any.

Superb gesture if thats fact.
Note to self: Message Damien and let him know I too am low on funds for acquisition of original Hirst pieces, perhaps he will donate one to me as well! ;D

funny you say that as I frequently use the fact that Las Vegas has the world's largest Hirst spin painting as a testament to the city's bad taste.

Banksy V Damien Hirst, by Gentle Mental on May 22, 2008 3:05:50 GMT 1, *** warning crappy analogy ahead ****
like comparing a football star with a swim star... both athletes, but they compete in very different sporting events.
The football star will obviously get more money, fame amongst sports fans in general, but the football star can never swim as well as the swimmer.
And, the football star is likely to be remembered by more and for a longer time. Cuz it's a more popular sport.
Will swimming be as popular as football one day? Very unlikely. It doesn't have the complexity, the history and the consistent big money support.

Banksy V Damien Hirst, by Heavyconsumer on May 22, 2008 3:10:13 GMT 1, a fifty million pound sale pretty much makes this debate a non-starter. You're talking 8 figures (even if you reduce the price by the value of the raw materials it must surely remain in the 10s of millions) versus six! I know that this was not the answer to the original question posed, but I think it's a clear indicator of who "the establishment" feels is the most relevant for the time being. I don't think that means this will always be the case, but we'll have to wait and see. Hirst is an undisputed superstar and one of the true heavyweights of contemporary art. I think Banksy may be knocking on that door. If he walks through it then he'll become massively relevant as the man to introduce a new genre to the art elite. Maybe I'm wrong in my opening statement, I don't pretend to be an expert, but this is my perception as pretty much an outsider.

I am sure it was an investment trust he was involved in that bought it because no one else was willing to pay the price he was after. Very little information was ever disclosed about and there is a lot of speculation it never really sold...
Which would make sense...as it is sh1te.

Banksy V Damien Hirst, by mcster on May 22, 2008 9:25:04 GMT 1, My experience of Hirst's work is limited, but what I have seen hasn't really impressed me. Maybe I'm too dumb to understand it, or maybe the stuff I've seen of his is just at the more poncey stuff, but a cabinet full of sea shells does nothing or me. I think what's great about Street Art is the fact it's so accessable, whereas IMO a lot of Hirst's stuff just isn't.

It doesn't have the complexity, the history and the consistent big money support. That analogy works for me. Hirst makes no bones about the fact that he knows how to work the system. In an interview with the Sunday Times he freely admits that all his art was created to make a noise within the art establishment. And with huge backers he got the publicity and colomn inchs to parade his wares. To do this he had to embrace the establishment and to a point get freindly with his old mate Sucky and sucky. Like it or not Hirst is an establishment whore.
To my knowledge Banksy has worked from the ground floor up. He has never looked to become part of the establishment, and to curtail to their expectations. He is definitly an independant artist that although maybe close to getting an invite into establishment hopefully will never except it.
Also at this moment in time, his art has never been based on somebody elses idea. Hirst cant say that.
(my 2 pence)
