Banksy Stop and Search Print, by mfly on Apr 28, 2017 21:09:27 GMT 1, But surely you can't really value it accurately until we see the results of the restoration. I hope it can be done, the outcome will be interesting to see. You're given a range of figures mate...such as 500 - 600k, 750 - 825k etc...nobody can put an exact figure on it as, you're correct in saying, nobody knows how good the finished piece will be. We couldn't insure it until it was up in 1 piece (as it could've fallen to pieces) & safely transported away!

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by mfly on Apr 28, 2017 21:10:40 GMT 1, Oh dear how sad. I wonder which gallery has taken it on. Thats already lost, but im sure it will look almost passable after a respray a repaint and a touch up or two. It'll look exactly like the day it was sprayed on the wall!

The reference to "as it should be!" is categoric.
You make this sound like a self-evident truth, where everyone is unanimously agreed.
Which begs the question: "as it should be!", according to whom?
According to the artist, the actual creator of the piece? Has Banksy changed his general position regarding the ephemeral nature of his street art?
Must have been £5000 to move it and respray Respray what?? Nothing will be resprayed...it's now a 6 - 9 month process for removing the layers of paint & restoring the original artwork underneath. You obv have no idea of just what's involved mate! It's well into 6 figures what this'll cost fully restored...it was nearly 20k for designing the frame, the steels, fabrication, ground works, welding etc etc then lifting & transportation! As for rather having the print...there isn't 1 of this mate, it's unique & iconic!
That sure is a lot of money.
Have you considered all possible options?
A small fortune could be saved by using the modestly-priced services of another professional with first-hand experience in this field.
Give Jez a call. He's at The Prince Albert in Brighton. Tel: 01273 730 499

You've probably spent more on removal than it will be worth, let alone restoration.

Nothing corporate here lad!! We're normal people, not that I have to justify ourselves, who enjoy art...we have a number of Banksy's, Hirst's, Micallef's, Brainwash's etc & thoroughly enjoy them thanks. An opportunity to get this came up & it was taken...it'll be restored, enjoyed & done whatever we want with seen as it's our money which is doing this. If, at some point in the future, it's sold for "a huge profit" then that's our good fortune for taking a massive risk on this. The post was put on as I thought members would be interested in it & could hopefully follow its progression through its restoration etc

Is the goal here to sell?

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by sleazus1slord on Apr 29, 2017 17:18:42 GMT 1, If they could remove multi layers of buff and spray paint, why couldn't they clean the omar diss off the bandaged heart balloon? This is a fools errand if I've ever seen one. Why don't you try to create something original of your own, instead of this obsessively parasitic money grab disguised as 'preservation'? You couldn't be further from the artists intention for the work.

How is it a money grab?
One he's likely spending a bunch to try and restore it. Two you just said it's basically impossible.
Seems more like burning money then grabbing. Lol

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by ed on Apr 29, 2017 19:28:55 GMT 1, I liked what Ben Eine said about removing street pieces during the panel discussion at the 'saving banksy' thing in Bristol the other week.
I've put it in my own words to avoid many many ****'s
Make a list of all the insults you know, and direct them at people who remove street pieces and then spit on them. BUUUTTTTT If some of his street pieces had been lifted and preserved and were still being looked at in 50/100 years time he'd be quite happy. BUTTTT isn't it all about context and positioning and how do you do that in a gallery, more swear words BUTTT As long as you do it for the art and for them to be seen by the masses, not to turn a profit, isn't that ok?
It was a well considered, balenced discussion with himself

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by medichead on Apr 29, 2017 21:02:10 GMT 1, I agree with lots of what edholder/beneine are saying.
In this case the piece was buried and lost to society. With this selfless act of preservation, we may uncover it again. I can't really argue against this since no one has been robbed of the piece in the first instance, but I would take issue if this then becomes a seven figure work of art being auctioned off - as people have stated here: in the act of preservation this will mostly be repainted, and to call it a Banksy for financial gain seems wrong. Let's hope that's not what this is about, in which case I am in favour of this expensive experiment!

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by Deleted on May 3, 2017 12:07:52 GMT 1, The image of the copper frisking the girl is very true to life.
A few years ago at a primary school in France, the gendarmes lined up the children against a wall and frisked them without their parents permission according to a local newspaper report. Something to do with searching for drugs and how society has changed.
It would be good to know the technique used to remove the layer of paint from this stencil jobby.
I agree that if the building was going to be pulled down anyway, plus that the artwork has been painted over that if some brave person wants to remove the wall in order to remove the overpaint. I see no harm in it.
I don't see the removal of the over paint as being easy if the artwork has been sprayed on top of a similar paint on the wall itself to begin with.
I guess the restorer/s will make a plan or large line drawing of the artwork as close as possible to the original in order to be able to start the removal of the overpaint from the dark black heavy painted areas parts of the artwork to begin with and see how it goes. Anything is possible depending on which type of paint was used to over paint he artwork and the stability of the paint underneath.
Can you post some pics as the restoration progresses.
