micallef 21st cent, by buddings on Jan 22, 2008 17:05:18 GMT 1, i have to do an essay on a piece of artwork for uni and have chosen micallef's 21st cetury love as i guess theres a lot about the image to talk about.
just wondering a few things, would be great if anyone knew the answers...
1) date of canvass, i know the print was released via pow in 2005 but was the canvas done in the same year?
2) the current owner, the price they payed and the estimate price for it now.
i think thats the only info i dont have. thankyou.
invisible +1s up for grabs ;D

I'd love to see it at auction as I'd have a huge bet with you it gets over ยฃ100k
It's Micallef's iconic work in the eyes of 90% of the people, it's a great work and it's huge...
Would easily pass ยฃ100k

micallef 21st cent, by Art-el on Jan 22, 2008 20:43:13 GMT 1, I know MM likes a punt and I'd follow him over a cliff on this one.
Stock markets dive, recession looming, sub prime blah blah blah. If the original canvas turned up at any reputable auction house in the world tomorrow the bidding would start at 100k.
Everyone to their own but 'Tarnished Star'. Did I miss a meeting? Where, When, Why?
Oh and before I hear people bleating about his POW edition of 1000 please be aware that the ONLY reason this was sold through POW and a large run at a fairly affordable price was because AM insisted.
The reason being that he wanted as many genuine fans (myself and many members included) and people who coveted his work that could not afford ยฃ750+ to have the chance to own a piece of his work. If that tarnishes his star for anyone, shame on you.
And if anything the image was virtually the stand out piece from his LA work. Yes I'm sure the 300k was very nice.
Have to say that since seeing 21st CL at Eyestorm in Exeter last year it is stunning, a powerful iconic image and is simply beautiful, and just a damn fine contemporary print and image and the first I'd buy if I won enough money on the above.
And for anyone posting that the bought it for under a grand, shame on you for rubbing salt in the wounds.
And anyone who bagged it for - ยฃ500, superb, but posting it takes the p**s (Self censored)
Neg away.............oh

micallef 21st cent, by Rude Copper on Jan 22, 2008 21:39:43 GMT 1, Great post Art-el, did i tell you that i sold it not long after?, for exactly the amount that i bought it for?, sorry for ruining your diatribe, but its true, As for tarnished star, i think the majority of people were underwhelmed with the work that the LA show yielded, it was'nt the giant step forward that people were expecting, a bit, more of the same, only perhaps not as good, then the laz prints, well lets face it, they were awful, the editions too big, & the images were just uninspiring, The POW print, if the idea was to let everyone who wanted one, get one, then great, they probably suceeded, very commendable, but as far as the validity of it as an example of his work, i, amongst others, thought it to be very weak. sounds like i hate his work, right? wrong. i'd love to own a copy of 'bomber girl' & his head studys are excellent, his show at laz, was as good a show as i've seen, i was just underwhelmed at the output of what hitherto, was a very exciting artist.
