Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by jnschicago on Feb 14, 2008 20:50:56 GMT 1, I'm sometimes amazed by the herd mentality of urban art buyers. For example, Bast currently has some great work on POWs site for very reasonable prices. Eric the Dog has some great stuff too. But, you couldn't give that stuff away. Everyone wants to pay thousands of dollars for some shit show by Faile.
My latest example is Nick Walker. He is a great artist. I've collected his work for years and have two pieces currently on my walls. Within the last few weeks, everyone has gone crazy for TMA prints. They're nice prints. But guess what? You can still buy the original Vandal triptych on Nicks site for 150 pounds. Why wouldn't you start there vs. spending thousands of pounds on the bay for a second hand TMA? It makes no sense at all.
Gee Vacher is another GREAT artist who couldn't sell her work if her life depended on it. Check this stuff out. Stop following the herds and driving up prices on crap. What next? 10 grand for Zbiok?

Seems like people on here are slagging off an artist/print one day and snapping up prints the next because of a couple of over priced pieces being sold at Bonhams.

Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by EHC on Feb 14, 2008 23:49:37 GMT 1, Whats with all the hate? Nick's been around long enough, should be happy for the guy. Overpriced is if you pay more than you have to, his stuff isn't going to get any cheaper.
So what if prices and demand go up after a big sale and show. Its nothing new, thats just how it is. With that much more money comes more attention, with more attention comes more money. If you missed the boat, move on and find other artists to discover.
So many people talking about his prices will come back down, etc. I say his prices are going UP if anything. At least for originals, his tma prints are already pretty high. When you have the most talked about piece at a highly publicized auction for exceeding estimates by 10x in a hot new category, you are going to draw a lot of attention from big money. Thats just my opinion of course but I think it makes sense.
Even though we've known about "urban" art for a while, its still new as hell to more traditional collectors with deep pockets that our "scene" isn't used to. Its going to be a whole new ballgame pretty soon. We've only gotten a glimpse of whats to come.

nick had run out of the vandals prints for a while, but they were not sold out, only out of stock! i got one a while ago and think they are still available, its probably worth another try because it is a grea print at a great price and is the starting blocks of the tma series!

Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by jonpud on Feb 15, 2008 9:33:18 GMT 1, I have been an open admirer of Nick and his work for several years now, I never bought the 'Mona Simpson' print or the 'Moona Lisa' as neither of these particular works did anything for me, it isn't just about buying a piece just because a particular artist has painted it, you have to love the image as well!
Sadly like Harveyn, I agreed a deal to buy an original MA work from Nick in October/November last year, I have the emails to prove the deal agreed but I have a feeling that somehow I aint ever gonna see this piece appear!!
BUT, Nick is a top bloke and perhaps he has just been too busy preparing for his show? Fingers crossed I will hear something soon, he has never let me down before!

Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by pezlow on Feb 15, 2008 9:49:49 GMT 1, Certainly no hate coming from here. Nick's been around ages and by all accounts is a top guy. There is no denying, however, that there is a bit of a herd mentality in this movement.
Of course there are people who have liked Nick's stuff from the get go but there are equally plenty of people jumping on the bandwagon.
Personally I have never been a huge fan of Nick's, although I quite like the vandal series and some of the butterfly paintings he has done. Two results at bonhams isn't going to change my opinion...

I disagree on that last sentence, but that's another discussion...
I've been off and on with Nick's work for a while, usually I like it on screen, then I buy and I'm a little, well, underwhelmed. I've done this with baby moll, the vandal, nickers and moona lisa... I also took a Ghetto Ghost in a swap which again, didn't do much...
As a result I didn't buy Bristol TMA... I then went to BRP a few days after the last show and saw London TMA in the flesh and to say it's stunning is an understatement... I wanted it but it was sold out, I saw the prices on ebay and thought, they're a little high, I'll hold on... and what happened? They went up and up... so now I am sans Morning After prints...
My issue is, I tend to have a completest streak and I know if I buy one I'll want them all... but that's already 3 I need to buy on the secondary market with how many more releases?
I suppose what I'm trying to say is one release (or a series of releases) can change an artist... TMA series has changed people's perceptions of Nick Walker and there is nothing now to say that he'll fall by the wayside... And I say this not from the position of someone that has a house full of Nick Walker prints and originals, I have one of the black and white Baby Molls and a Moona Lisa... I sold my last couple of bits, 4 pieces, including a Ghetto Ghost, for under ยฃ600 (for all 4) only about 6-8 weeks ago...
But if he keeps up the standard he has now set himself with TMA series and the LA exhibition, doesn't do anything stupid (Micallef's last release!), doesn't over-do the concept and start becoming staid / a self parody (hello D*Face) then there is absolutely NOTHING that can stop him really cementing his position right at the top of this game...

Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by bond on Feb 15, 2008 10:39:07 GMT 1, who knows , lets face it if we could predict the future we'd have all bought up as many Banksy canvasses as possible and now be sitting on a 200foot yacht somewhere.
I personally think Nick has now cracked it " recognition wise " and the TMA works are what's finally managed to get him some of the attention he richly deserves.
If there's another Bonhams auction soon --- anyone know if there is ?? --- then i would expect another hike in prices.

Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by hlarmy on Feb 15, 2008 11:12:11 GMT 1, I'm also in agreement.
I've only bought two prints of the secondary market (Morons B/W signed and London TMA). The latter I was umming and arghing over for about a month and then decided to bite the bullet and buy for ยฃ750 (which I thought at the time was over the top - I love the print however and had to have it. This was just 3 weeks ago.
My only regret - turning down the Bristol TMA for ยฃ500 at the beginning of January. Hindsight!!!

The Vandal show at the Carmichael Gallery in LA sold out and only a few were left before the Bonhams sale, so that wasn't a factor. I personally see TMA New York as his best in the series and hopefully that will also be made into a print.

IMO the latter is by far and away the best in the series and if I don't get one of those to go with my London I think I might cry
BTW - apparently its Nick's favourite too.

Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by romanywg on Feb 15, 2008 14:16:41 GMT 1, No, but you can see them all curling up and definately not laser cut. I did take some footage of him at work on the stencils but that will be incorporated in the final film.
