Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by jonpud on Feb 15, 2008 14:17:48 GMT 1, Nick is no different a situation than Micallef found himself in IMO, don't think the prices will stay at silly levels for long! Only one long term high price Street artist as far as I am concerned, Banksy. I disagree on that last sentence, but that's another discussion... I've been off and on with Nick's work for a while, usually I like it on screen, then I buy and I'm a little, well, underwhelmed. I've done this with baby moll, the vandal, nickers and moona lisa... I also took a Ghetto Ghost in a swap which again, didn't do much... As a result I didn't buy Bristol TMA... I then went to BRP a few days after the last show and saw London TMA in the flesh and to say it's stunning is an understatement... I wanted it but it was sold out, I saw the prices on ebay and thought, they're a little high, I'll hold on... and what happened? They went up and up... so now I am sans Morning After prints... My issue is, I tend to have a completest streak and I know if I buy one I'll want them all... but that's already 3 I need to buy on the secondary market with how many more releases? I suppose what I'm trying to say is one release (or a series of releases) can change an artist... TMA series has changed people's perceptions of Nick Walker and there is nothing now to say that he'll fall by the wayside... And I say this not from the position of someone that has a house full of Nick Walker prints and originals, I have one of the black and white Baby Molls and a Moona Lisa... I sold my last couple of bits, 4 pieces, including a Ghetto Ghost, for under ยฃ600 (for all 4) only about 6-8 weeks ago... But if he keeps up the standard he has now set himself with TMA series and the LA exhibition, doesn't do anything stupid (Micallef's last release!), doesn't over-do the concept and start becoming staid / a self parody (hello D*Face) then there is absolutely NOTHING that can stop him really cementing his position right at the top of this game...
Good post Mike and I agree with 99%!
I don't know if you have seen the Bristol edition in the flesh? I loved it when I got it, Nick printed them himself. Then the London edition was released and it blew me away, the varnish finish makes a big difference and the whole print is simply stunning, shame the Bristol edition wasn't produced by BRP!
Can't wait for my Hollywood to arrive! Not the best of the three print releases IMO, but like you Mike, I want them all!!!

Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by dmandpenfold on Feb 15, 2008 15:54:21 GMT 1, THAT...is fucking awesome.
Until now i thought the London one was the best by far....but now i am dumbstruck......well for a few seconds at least..
I remember the Sydney MA it wasnt my cup of tea so left it alone, Bristol came along, but i thought i'd hang out for the London one as i'd seen a preview shot and could only afford one...of course London had to be bought in person unless you like ebay so missed it..curses, now Hollywood in nanoseconds...i didnt rate it as much though...now this...
when's it likely to be released and where? i am making the trip to where ever for this; it is a thing of great beauty.
By the way where's hugs he's got a Moona Canvas lucky chump, anyone want my print for $20,000
When you talk about TMA NY are you talking about the one of the Vandal in the boat rowing away from Manhattan or this one... IMO the latter is by far and away the best in the series and if I don't get one of those to go with my London I think I might cry BTW - apparently its Nick's favourite too.

Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by gozgoz on Feb 15, 2008 16:17:11 GMT 1, No, but you can see them all curling up and definately not laser cut. I did take some footage of him at work on the stencils but that will be incorporated in the final film.
so ive always wondered... why dont these artists just laser cut their stencils?
its like logan hicks?
they sure like to do things the hard way.

At the risk of sounding repetative, that's really nice.

Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by instinct on Feb 17, 2008 2:57:15 GMT 1, lazer cut? im guessing jef that yours is a sarcastic/ironic post? but for the record here goes... it is the process by which the artist uses a laser cutter (machine) to make the stencils! the images that result are so perfect and as such (in my view) have a certain increased level of impact. i think that this process however is not true to the form and so at this time only seeks to devalue the quality of the image?

Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by Jef Aerosol on Feb 18, 2008 23:27:40 GMT 1, sarcastic ? Why ? ? ? I just didn't know stencils could be cut with a laser machine ! And I still can't imagine what such machine may look like ! Is it big ? Must be dangerous, isn't it ? Doesn't it burn the cardboard when cutting it ? How does it work ? Any weblink ? I'm very curious about that and would really like to see what it's like and how it can work ! Is it some sort of electronic cutter : you follow the line and a laser light cuts the paper instead of a blade ? It sounds so science fiction !

Nick Walker - Dumb Oversight, by Jef Aerosol on Feb 18, 2008 23:31:46 GMT 1, oops, just seen your previous post with the links ! Have just paid a visit to the websites. It seems you must have the stencils done by them, they don't show what the machine is like on there. Anyway, I don't really see the point as cutting the stencil is a very important and pleasant stage in the process of making a stencil. If I had my stencils cut by somebody else or by a machine, I'd have the sensation the stencil isn't mine... I'd rather stay faithful to my good old cutters and card !

i guess id say cutting out all but the most difficult stencils would be cheating but its excelent for design work, can cut out 1pt letters in thick cardboard .... fantastic
they cost about ยฃ20,000 each if any forum members fancy chipping in

Yes Gee Vaucher is an amazing artist but apart from the praying hands print nicked off Durer's piece I'm not sure what she's doing now. Any links? The Crass record sleeves where something else and would quite happily buy the originals if I could!
