Honestly, if you won 40k tomorrow, you'd go borrow the extra 17.5% and go buy a micallef picture would you? Honestly?

AMs work hanging..., by felix on Jul 29, 2008 22:26:29 GMT 1, but surely LAZ's top end clientele has evolved into people that wont need to sell it, even for 1/2 the price, if they had too, and thats the point im sure when micallef has his next solo show there will be cheaper canvases and works on paper on sale
I'd be hugely pissed if I had bought something elitist for 40k and then that same artist comes out with a huge catalogue of work for less money. Micallef will now have to release at this price mark, I hope he has the buyers ready and i'm out (I was along time ago anyway ;D)

Yeah man, I like him more than I did when I first saw his work, everything I have ever seen of his work has only ever grown on me. I cannot say that about any other artist producing work today.
EDIT - Wouldnt be paying the VAT, I'd walk in and offer cash, off the books like

Buy it from your offshore property, then carry it back on the plane in your hand luggage. Job done. Or just turn up with cash and the beers.

im not saying that he would have huge catalogue's of work for less money, but i guess it would be like most artists solo show's, there is work of various sizes and mediums, with a variety of prices

you're missing the point. I set up gallery x with artisty y. I put up 10 works by artist y. I put "sold" next to 5 of them @ price z. Hey if the gullible sheep now believe the artist is worth price z, I got a good thing going...

AMs work hanging..., by guest2 on Jul 29, 2008 22:36:06 GMT 1, ....Micallef is very very talented - the test often being that if you saw a work when you were in a different country and did not expect it or know anything about him would you rate him. I think I would. Not into the guns and corporate logos but his portraits are really special in my opinion..
i'm confused, doesn't a good piece of art look good in any country? as for the portraits, there are a couple on Lazinc. Go fill your boots.
Any corporate logos in the upcoming dface show?

I wouldn't think and would hope Laz don't do this, but you are right - always be wary about somethings 'worth'. Anyway they would be stupid to, it works much better for others doing this practice at an auction

Fair enough comment Graeme, but for me, the point is that they are overpriced at this point in AM's career. Just feel that the prices are solely aimed at those with bigger wallet's..even they won't want more than one big original on their wall..
Not sure about the 'cheaper canvases and works on paper on sale', do Laz / AM base their prices on size / worthiness?(!). Why sell for less? ..dangerous games imo.

AMs work hanging..., by slowmo on Jul 29, 2008 22:54:16 GMT 1, Funny that top, I constantly have to pull back from buying Micallef prints, I have three, I would like all of them but couldn't find the space and think its important to have diversity on the walls. However if I could buy originals like prints, Antony's work is diverse enough that one simply wouldn't do.

AMs work hanging..., by Harveyn on Jul 29, 2008 22:55:00 GMT 1, Great contributions from Mose, James, Lou and Pez. To many points to comment on and to be honest at times each one of you have made points that have struck a cord with me.
I think I would certainly like to explore this subject matter more and be educated further about the impact other art genres have had on this particular art scene and how this scene might evolve or disappear due to its inability or ability to cross over into or stimulate interest in the mainstream art world / market.
The main question I have of myself is whether I have the time or the patience to allow that education process to occur. The internet age and pace at which globalization is occurring sort of suits me and my lifestyle. I think thats what appeals to me about this art movement. It may also mean that it has no longevity. Its accessible and moving at pace. I am quite happy to buy art on impulse and regret it. In fact thats been part of the fun. The evolution of my collection has been based on trial and error a process that has allowed me to develop my taste.

AMs work hanging..., by graeme501 on Jul 29, 2008 23:02:43 GMT 1, what i mean is, micallef has taken a bit of a battering recently, so he would want these new canvases to be naturally his best work - these are his top end canvases produced for a group show
i would expect his solo show to include original work aimed at different levels at the market, like the head study on sale at laz for 25k, and the charcoal on paper - dumb girl, that sold for 10k (admittadly at an auction)
about the comment about the work being aimed at bigger wallets, and even they wont want more than one big original on their walls .... with big wallets, come many houses, and many walls

I agree with you on the trial and error part completely and think this is how it should be done, follow your heart. As in life though, some people live by the book, some throw it out the window. Neither are a given practice and nothing is for certain. Do / buy what you like, whatever suits you.
