matt small-this is england, by verbalkint on Nov 9, 2007 13:37:23 GMT 1, Off the hook. Matt took it to the next level, his cutout stuff was crazy good. Elboe Toe invited me his show at the back was sick too. Anyone check his flower stencils. Amazing. A lot of people in smart shooes and suites looking at me like i shouldnt be their tho. Maybe cos i was in a hoody covered in paste? Great work, did not feel welcome. I left quickly
you know what mate, you should have set fire to the bastards. I cannot stand city boys....... 'apparantly rupert says we should put our bonuses into street art, there is a show tonight by a chap called matthew small, it does mean getting off at old street station though. How much shall we take? £100k each should do it, what do you say old boy'
There was a bunch of city boys at the neate preview q ing for prints, they didnt have a clue about art at all, but luckily there were some ace people there too.

matt small-this is england, by Mister Frame Man on Nov 9, 2007 13:57:25 GMT 1, Nothing, the eyes do not engage, their is no emotion coming out from them. I got to thinking, if I was to own a piece of this, I would want it to engage me, afterall, when you bring a portrait into your home, thats a new face, you want to know what its thinking, feeling or at least get the feeling they are trying to tell you something.
"Lawrence" has no emotion?

matt small-this is england, by dave313perry on Nov 9, 2007 14:06:05 GMT 1, Interesting thread folks and good to get some different opinions - personally (in brief), i really like Matt Small as an artist, i agree the odd piece can lack abit of emotion and depth but i think the technique is so dynamic and unique that they are still fantastic examples of his talent - its like anyone, there is always poor - average - fantastic examples of their work, i just think when he gets it right, they are truly amazing!!!
Its all about taste - and iv also come to the conclusion that i dont like them in these Perspex frames, totally my choice and against the grain but especially seeing the 3d piece, i think its a crime to put it behind perspex, however nicely created it is, i would just want to touch it!
just my personal taste - i like it rustic!!! ( - and i havnt been to the show... )

I took that picture :-D
I think one of the pieces at LSG (Young Star 9??) looked to be of the same guy as in that picture... but it wasn't the same painting.

If he was looking at you, he was staring at the top left of your head, lawrence is looking over your shoulder. Sorry man, I just don't feel anything from them. But I am genuinely pleased that other people do, the guy has unquestionable talent.

matt small-this is england, by JD on Nov 9, 2007 17:57:08 GMT 1, As I said before this is one of my favourite things I wish for (so am a fan of past work) for but after going to the show its just ........................what can I say... all the same, now as someone else said the execution etc is brilliant and far better than what I can do and I hate to criticise but then again all Manchester supporters cant play like Ronaldo right ? So critisism is unfair but as a buyer how many of these would you want? I was just hoping for something different instead of 20 portraits of hoody's ,youths etc. Where does he go from here? I just think great but wont go to the next show unless its different. Saying that I didnt think the prices were that bad but obviously all the best stuff had a red sticker, but would you want more than 1?

Can't say I appreciated all the pieces but nice to see something different.

matt small-this is england, by mike hunt on Nov 9, 2007 19:48:00 GMT 1, Firstly I hate it when city boys make art lovers feel unwelcome. I bumped into someone from school who became a city boy - the tosser said 'I didn't know you were into this kind of thing', which was really stupid, because at school it was all I did. I worked hard to build a career in art/design. He is a sneering, lying idiot with no clue. Rant over
Secondly, i love matt small's technique. It is awesome. Dynamic style with lots of emotion in the subject and mark making. However, I've been itching to see what he was going to do next, because the portrait thing can get tiresome. Conor Harrington uses more elements, so its not so much of a problem. I do worry that Matt needs to do something dramatically different. That said, the photos posted above look stunning. Congratulations.

There were signs of a new direction that I liked a lot. Not sure however about the girl portraits apart from the one on concrete which was a belter. My mate bought Simon so a good night all in

matt small-this is england, by mike hunt on Nov 9, 2007 20:34:38 GMT 1, What I mean is Conor doesn't just do headshots and uses different scenarios which means his subject matter is a bit more varied. In terms of mark making, Matt Small is streets ahead.

matt small-this is england, by ABC on Nov 9, 2007 21:43:49 GMT 1, I'm so gutted I couldn't make it last night , far to busy with the third sprog at the moment. I will make an effort to see his stuff next week though. It seems, by looking at the snaps that there was a far wider variety in style than his normal (but still amazing) works, good to see him experimenting with different colour backgrounds etc. Mrframemans new addition is a stunner too, good to see him painting different aspects of the portrait too. I think the days of getting another to match "Jason" may be over. Its also good to see prices are still just within range. Matt (If your reading ) Looks like the hard work paid off.
