Beejoir Heir Apparent?, by carlito on Aug 1, 2007 12:10:34 GMT 1, In my living room I have a faile happens everyday in green pow edition, a Banksy Weston Super mare, Antony Micallef Judgement day, Banksy Grannies, Lucy Mclauchlan hanging around and a Dan Baldwin Apocolypse wow (the end of everything).
small living room then is it?

Take a guess at which one most people who come round like best? Dan Baldwin's work is colourful and draws you in, not all of it is good, but show me any artist whose stuff is? Just because flippers can't get paid, doesn't mean an artist is crap. Its not a dig at anyone, but it makes me laugh that Dan Baldwin gets featured in Vogue magazine for his art, but on here is rates as naff because you cant sell his art on Ebay for a profit.
There's some truth in what you say...Dan's work is good. Politics was available for 150 quid, got posted on the forums, everyone bought a few. Got listed on the bay, went for 300, everyone bought the others to sell...they came on the boards and hyped it up to heaven, people got pissed off and started slagging it off to redress the balance.. prices collapsed, baggers (and the sheep) stuck with prints they don't like and can't sell. Even worse for those who bought up a shed load of Canvasses ! Result !!!
Dan will keep on keeping on, selling to those that like his work, he's got a decent career, solid foundations and a style all his own.
Same happened to Eelus, Blek, Dface and is now happening to Francis, Denning, Mantis and Beejoir.
There's a lesson to be learned. Buy what you love and what you can reasonably afford, forget the heard and the hyped up secondary market and you're laughing.

Lets not forget Mr B him self. If it wasn't for the internet and these forums Banksy would never be able to command the price he does. These forums represent a newer, more democratic form of media and with the regime change from the old media to the new - the old hero's get replaced by the new ones. What we are witnessing is a technological and cultural revolution. The artists on these forums that get celebrated consistantly will become significant players in the art world and the first to be crowned was Banksy.

Beejoir Heir Apparent?, by carlito on Aug 1, 2007 12:37:50 GMT 1, the technological (internet) and cultural (street art) parts of this are really interesting points...in a broad sense think of all the people who have brought into the art scence purely through liking Banksy / street art - I'd never considered I'd be rich enough to ever own an original (just always seen it as a toff's game) nor appreciate various artists differing styles and messages...this coupled with the Internet allowing me not only to buy pieces, contact artists, but discuss with like minded individuals.... then sitting there adding to oil to the mechanism is a market allowing ppl to make a profit from their purchases if they so choose, which doesn't involve galleries/ auction houses etc...

+1 from me. I agree 100% and while I don't fancy all of dan's stuff (some of the latest prints arent for me). I quite like his work and think he shouldnt be trashed just b/c of ebay prices.

Beejoir Heir Apparent?, by irf2112 on Aug 1, 2007 13:50:37 GMT 1, I dont think ppl are bashing Dan because of fleabay prices - I personally feel he tries to be controversial just for the sake of controversy.
I'm sure he'll have a successful career - good luck to him.
