My INVADER Pride and Joy!, by hungrig on Mar 17, 2007 1:26:20 GMT 1, Interesting story, but I have never heard of such a thing before with Invader pieces.
Doesn't Invader use extra-strong cement to apply the different works? Why would a piece be left loose as a doormat in front of a shop? It doesn't add up with Invader's modus operandi.

Still think it should be on the streets, if everyone went around removing them, there would be nothing, oh well invader, if this ones cosher, its a -1 on the invader map!

.. and I am not saying I am a saint ..
.. but what is the diference between this and taking banksy piece and part of the wall with it ..
.. it is a street art .. and that's where it should be ..
.. but who am I to judge .. I am probably just jealous it is not hanging on my wall ..

It doesn't look as if it was ever on a wall, it looks too clean between each tile, surely even if invader doesn't use grout the adhesive would have come through between the tiles and acted like a grout.

My INVADER Pride and Joy!, by hungrig on Mar 17, 2007 16:04:18 GMT 1, I am stepping away here from the ethics of removing street art from the street.
jaypaav's story is a very charming one. It makes me feel rather warm and fuzzy inside. The issue I was focussing on, however, was its credibility. I have never heard of Invader leaving in a city any works that were not cemented down. What would be the point? It would just encourage people to take them home, as jaypaav has done. That simply defeats the purpose of the 'invasion' at street level.
In this respect, and assuming the item is a genuine Invader (rather than one of a number of 'tribute' or copy pieces referred to on Invader's own website), the story seems unusual if not suspect.
I am also a little doubtful of shop assistants or shop owners giving an item away, even if they don't "get it", particularly if they have just been told that the piece in question is by a famous street artist. This was an item the shop had been happily using as a doormat for about a year. Why refuse cash for it if the whole purpose of the shop is to raise money for a particular charity?
** jaypaav - If your story is true, then be a good man and let us know the full name of the shop and where exactly it's located (city and street). Someone else can then independently verify your version of events. At the same time, they can pick up a couple of t-shirts. There are many animal lovers on this Forum who would be happy to show the shop "some support".
My hope is that I am being overly suspicious and that the story is true. It just doesn't make sense to me. I would love to be proved wrong, and it would be interesting if any comments are received from Invader on this. However, if we are dealing with a complete fabrication, then I would imagine that jaypaav's framed piece would be offered to members of this Forum over the next few weeks because "times are bad and needs must".

My INVADER Pride and Joy!, by BK83 on Mar 17, 2007 17:03:06 GMT 1, Wow. first off. I am an artist myself and I fully understand what it means to take something from the street. I had no intention of ever having this piece I was merely surprised as to what it was doing on their doorstep, when?, how? etc. they only said it had showed up about a year ago. and looking at it as you can see it is rather large and has two invader pieces together which leads me to believe as curley said that it was possibly just dumped.
When I explained to them about Invader and how famous he was they appreciated my enthusiasm and said do you want it? I of course said "fuck yeh" -- who wouldnt in this situation?!?!? Beside the fact that their storefront is below streetlevel it was covered in dirt and bird shit (see pictures -- the picture I took was after I started sweeping it and then I realised I should take a pic because it was such a fucking great find -- believe me it was much more disgusting) this peice wasn't being appreciated by streetart lovers -- now it is.
The shop is located on 4th street between 1st and 2nd avenue. (I live on 3rd between 1st and 2nd avenue) and there are many invader pieces around this area. Im gonna go over to the shop today to take a photo of where it was so you can all see.
And what is this about it being exactly the same as cutting a banksy piece from a wall. absolutly not! I had no intention of even taking it home when I asked them about it -- they offered it up and in this situation it made sense. noone even knew it was there!

fair enough , mate .. I am off your back now ..
well maybe one more thing
even though it is piece of art (untill someone gives us a proof that it's not a genuine Invader) it would be nice if it served a purpose it was made for .. to be a artdoormat
but it sure does look great in the frame as well

"Hi Stuart,
It is obviously not a genuine space invader : not the ceramic tiles he uses and obviously this "plate" of tiles has never been cemented anywhere. In fact, it looks exactly the way the plates of mosaic tiles are assembled together when you buy them from a store, they are on a grid of nylon wires (except that on this case there are already "albino" space invaders patterns in it which is strange !).
Cheers, Orbi"
