My INVADER Pride and Joy!, by hungrig on Mar 18, 2007 14:30:38 GMT 1, goffyxtc,
There is no reason to be annoyed.
This is a public forum. Its purpose is to provide a platform for the exchange of views, to encourage debate, to be informative, and to have fun. The vast majority of us don't know one another personally. It is therefore unwise to take all posts at face value, regardless of how long a member has been active.
Everyone has their own motives for joining and participating on this forum. Many use it as a source of information and amusement only. Others use it for less honourable reasons. This could be for:
- misinforming others about, and putting them off, an item they wish to buy themselves; - vouching for a seller on eBay, who happens to be them under a different user name; - obtaining information about the release of a print for the sole purpose of on-selling it at a premium (often to other members of this forum); - obtaining detailed information about the description of a print or original in order to create more credible fakes; - etc., etc.
Just think about all of the members of this forum, including the hundreds of lurkers. On two occasions now on another forum, I have seen members properly screwed by other members. The culprits were regular contributors, not just lurkers. They had been "matey" over a long period and therefore built up a level of trust with other forum members. Nevertheless, with cash as the incentive, they behaved in a truly shameful manner. In short, and as with all forums, the wise rule of thumb is to proceed with caution.
-----------------------------
Going back to jaypaav's story, I would love for it to be true. It is a great story. However, is it not right that the story should be questioned if there are questions to be asked?
Is it preferable that jaypaav and others on this forum live under the illusion that the piece is genuine, even if it turned out to be fake (i.e. don't let the truth get in the way of a good story)? If your answer is yes, would it still be the same if, at some stage in the future, jaypaav decided to sell the piece as an Invader?
As for Rat's question ("Does it matter if its real?"), of course it matters. Think of how easy it would be to create a fake Banksy 'Heavy Weaponry' canvas which more or less looks the same as a genuine. If you owned one of the genuine canvases, would you be happy with the fact that it looks great and not bothered about whether it was real?

My INVADER Pride and Joy!, by goffy on Mar 18, 2007 17:11:03 GMT 1, Ha, Ha, Ha. Firstly I am not annoyed. It's not me you are accusing of being a future rip-off merchant, (I hope) Some points of yours I take. But my point was that jay had a nice little story there of which he was quite proud. But the speed and manner in which it was shot down was a little disconcerting. I have asked for help myself from this forum and it was very forthcoming, of which I appreciated. None of us want to be ripped off and it's good we help each other to limit that happening. But until we know definately that someone is trying to con us lets play nice.
Now let's go and give our mothers a hug.

My INVADER Pride and Joy!, by BK83 on Mar 18, 2007 17:47:14 GMT 1, Dissapointed to say the least. I find this whole thing disconcerting on many levels. I was really proud of my find and excited about the prospect of having an original street invasion Invader piece in my living room. unfortunately some members of this forum feel the need to shoot people down to make themselves feel better, apparently ... There's no other explanation I can think of.
What I dont understand is why this debate was even sparked, I wasnt trying to sell this to anyone, I wasnt trying to scam anyone -- nor did I have any intention of doing so. The sad part is that it is now evident that we have members of this forum who are so cynical and conspiracy driven and so consumed by the dollar that they cant even appreciate the love of art anymore.
I thought everyone would enjoy seeing this as we do enjoy sharing all of our framed artworks.... Excuse me while I go wash this bitter taste out of my mouth.

exactly why I posted "Does it matter if its real? It looks great and it is unique" for which some t*t gave me a stupid respect minus (is there any way of turning this s**tty respect thing off btw- most annoying)
Personally I think it looks great, and as long as you are happy with it, then f**k the rest. I'd love to have that personally and would consider it a real find. It was art literally found on the street....doesnt get more real than that. The mystery that you don't know who did it makes it even better I reckon.

My INVADER Pride and Joy!, by hasselhoff on Mar 18, 2007 18:55:30 GMT 1, Jay, if you like the piece as an image regardless of who made it then you've lost nothing whatsover.
I agree with RAT on the respect thing, I have -1 now and all I did was e-mail invader to find out if it was him who did the piece (I only questioned it at all as it does not show up on the invader new york map).

My INVADER Pride and Joy!, by pezlow on Mar 18, 2007 20:58:24 GMT 1, Can I just say I have had some dealings with Jaypaav, an artist himself. He has offered to contribute to my charity auction and seems like an all round top bloke. By all means question the authenticity of this piece if you must but the personal snipes about this guy (i.e. he is only posting this because he wants to sell it) are simply unfair and more to the point totally incapable of substantiation.

Fact of the matter is, the piece is in your possession, not anyone elses'. I think that's good enough!

My INVADER Pride and Joy!, by hungrig on Mar 19, 2007 0:32:04 GMT 1, Well, it appears I too have lost a couple of "respect" points since I posted my views on this matter. Fair enough. No doubt that comes with the territory when making comments people don't agree with or don't want to hear. [As mentioned by Rat, query whether there is a way of turning this respect system off. One might also question its very purpose and whether the allocation of plus or minus points effectively serves that purpose. Though I must admit getting a bit of a cheap thrill and 'frisson' when I was down to a -2 or -3 after my first post.]
jaypaav - No one is shooting you down for the sake of shooting you down. I should also add, for avoidance of doubt, that it doesn't make me feel better if you feel disappointed or disconcerted. I don't get my rocks off on the misery of others.
Am I a cynic? Check - absolutely. Conspiracy-driven? Not at all; I simply ask questions to make sure I have all the facts available. Consumed by the dollar? Not in the least, I can assure you, not even by the pound sterling. Can't appreciate the love of art anymore? Here, I'm afraid, you have misunderstood me completely.
For the reasons I stated above, your story just didn't make sense to me. At least not if the piece you found was a genuine Invader. So my questions were really about whether the story was true, and whether you had actually been fortunate enough to have found a real Invader.
People did enjoy seeing the piece you found, but I don't think you should feel disappointed by or blame anyone for questionning it. That is one of the purposes of this forum. To get to the truth. Is it not better to know than to not know whether the item you framed is an Invader? I would most certainly want to find out. Likewise for any artist whose work I had found, was given, or purchased. For me personally, knowing would make all the difference in the world. As referred to in my previous post, it's the difference between having on my wall a Banksy and having on my wall a virtually identical Banksy 'tribute'.
From the response received by hasselhoff from Orbi, it would seem that your piece may not be a genuine Invader. However, in your position, I would check this separately with Invader myself. In any event, and regardless of whether it is an Invader, it still looks good. And on this point at least, I believe that everyone is in agreement.
[pezlow - I was not accusing jaypaav of posting for the purpose of selling. But forgive me if I raised this as a possibility; my world-weary and jaded eyes have seen such things before.]
