Blek le Rat on OBEY, by artstylee on Apr 1, 2008 22:00:56 GMT 1, i heard about the show, but it seems that since the nick walker show there has been quite a few of these pow/laz/brp artists coming through Cali. Aiko, Bast, Lucy Mc____.
I was thinking about checking the show out a few days after the opening, his stuff is expensive for a mono print. Great at what he does but really I think a bit overpriced. Rather save my dough for a 4-8 color print. I just like color though. But I do like Blek Le Rats stuff just think it makes more sense, and has alot more power in the street.

Not entirely sure what you mean by a higher profile. He is very highly regarded by other street artists and his work always sells very well, so I think it is fair to say that his profile is already high.
I also might add that he is a very stand up guy, one of lifes good people.

Blek le Rat on OBEY, by Happy Shopper on Apr 2, 2008 0:06:06 GMT 1, Its good to see Blek has his first US solo exhibition on the 5th of April at the SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS GALLERY in LA. Obey has got behind him with a piece on his website. I am sure this is going to be a good year for Blek.
Shepard Fairey owns (or part owns) Subliminal Projects, so it's kind of in his own interests to support the show.
Canvas's are from about $11,000 to $44,000. I was hoping they'd be cheaper than that, but if you have the cash go for it !

Your on a Banksy forum mate - to say that Banksy wouldnt be around if it wasnt for Blek is a pretty bold statement to flip out.
Indeed he has influenced Banksy but thats like saying there would be no Messi without Maradona!
no malice intended

Blek le Rat on OBEY, by doublehelix on Apr 2, 2008 0:55:24 GMT 1, My initial post may have been over reductive, but it's essentially true. Blek was the pioneer or stencil art back in 81 when Banksy was a 7 year old. It in no way diminishes Bankys' work to acknowledge that it was influenced by other artists. Banksy took Blek's ball and ran with it I'm not denying that.

You may be too late already. Contact the gallery for the Buy Sheet. It'll probably all be sold before the show opens !

Blek le Rat on OBEY, by Jef Aerosol on Apr 2, 2008 10:14:30 GMT 1, I don't want to reduce Blek's influence in any way : I respect his work and we've known each other for more than 23 years now. But it isn't true to say that every stenciller or street artist was influenced by him. I personnally started in 1982 without having heard of that guy at all ! Actually when i started stencilling i had never seen any street stencils before ! I only saw a tiny anti-nuclear logo on a wall in my city and I saw the stencils on Joe Strummer's and Mick Jones's shirts and jackets (the Clash)... Blek was in Paris and I never went to Paris at the time. And the funny thing is that I met some people in Bourges that started stencilling in 83 without having seen any other stencils before either ! And they stencilled rats and bugs and bats like me. I later discovered Blek in Paris (in 83 or 84) and realized he too had been stencilling rats ! In fact there was something "in the air" at the time... The period was "post punk, post pop, post warhol" etc... and we knew about spraycans because of reports or movies about NYC and the Bronx and those American graffitis... And things just happened... So, without minoring Blek's talent and importance and influence on many people, I think it's important to stress that many stencillers had never heard of him when they started...

Blek le Rat on OBEY, by stenz1 on Apr 2, 2008 11:44:35 GMT 1, Blek was influenced and inspired by New York Graffitti and took it back to France, he was originally a stenciller, and became a paste up merchant after he was caught and heavilly fined by the authorities, you can see his direct influence in the work of Faile and Banksy. He is a true legend, all round nice guy, humble, and I think representative of artists generally in the Street Art scene.

Blek le Rat on OBEY, by mammal2 on Apr 2, 2008 12:10:37 GMT 1, Blek is great. I have only met him once and he was a gent. Some of his work does not float my boat, but most of it is genius. I would love to see more of his stuff on the street. When he did paste ups around Old Street a year ago, they didn't last too long, but they made you smile when you did see them. His last rat print from BRP was simple but great and I quite like his newer stuff. I hope that when he gets over here for the BRP show he bombs the hell out of the capital. Oi Oi

Blek le Rat on OBEY, by Jef Aerosol on Apr 2, 2008 12:27:02 GMT 1, maybe you guys will be interested in some "vintage" pic :
On this pic, you can see : VR, Epsylon Point, El assiston, Olivier, Jef Aรฉrosol, Nice Art, Miss Tic, La Signe, Coma Baby, HP, Blek le Rat... etc...
Leipzig Stencil Festival, 1991
(my red cap was brand new then !)
this was where and when Blek met Sybille, his (german) wife ! We had an awesome time there, all of us : it'll remain a grrreat memory for us all !
