BLEK ON D*FACE, by bullet on Jun 6, 2008 0:17:40 GMT 1, Just spotted a nice quote in the back of the blek book
Would like to thank Banksy for opening up the eyes of the world to street art; D*FACE for pushing it further;
good book by the way, i suggest everyone gets a copy. Some bugger has scribbled a rat in the front of mine and signed it Blek. Bastard. And he signed the bookmark...
Its amazing how much Banksy has stolen (cough) sorry, been influenced by blek

BLEK ON D*FACE, by thebleedingedge on Jun 6, 2008 13:52:47 GMT 1, It's a shit point because it assumes that without Blek people would not have used stencils, if the reasons Banksy uses to explain why he uses stencils are true, then he would have happened with or without Blek, Blek is one of the giants on whose shoulders Banksy stands, but I think Banksy would have been that guy if Blek wasn't. Banksy was after efficiency and got a contrasting style as a functional benefit, Blek was after contrast in his style and got efficiency as a functional benefit. You know what necessity is the mother of, and because they both had different requirements and neither needed a forerunner to exist, they both would have happened regardless.
Blek is like the Grandad, he can get pissed all day long and say what he wants because he was in the war (even though you know he was just a radio operator), nobody takes him too seriously, he paid his dues and as long as he isn't being a racist or getting his cock out round the Christmas table, just smile and nod.

Disagree strongly! Implies Blek is responsible for the birth of ALL street art EVERYWHERE, which is clearly not the case. OK, maybe there would be less stencil artists around today and maybe even LESS street at, especially in Europe, but that's just overcooking the goose.

BLEK ON D*FACE, by Montubu7 on Jun 6, 2008 15:10:20 GMT 1, I'll be honest if i was Blek le rat i would also trade off the Banksy name mentioning it here there & everywhere. Imo hes only of significance because he was one of the early stencil artists, his stencils i think are pretty poor ( apart from a few decent images)
The post from thebleedingedge pretty much sums it up for me.

BLEK ON D*FACE, by insite on Jun 6, 2008 15:46:19 GMT 1, No Blek didn't invent stencils, they'd been widely used for decades before he started to work on the streets.
What Blek did do though was to change the way that they were used. He took a medium which had been used to produce propaganda that could sometimes be viewed as art and produced art which could be viewed as propaganda. I'm not sure if this is conceptual or philosophical (or even if there's a difference) but I do think it was an important milestone in the evolution of graffiti.
Much of Bleks work is conceptual as well, the shadow of a rat, the reproduction of classics in an outdoor environment instead of being confined in museums and his dancers performing in the streets.
Having lived on site for years these are concepts which appeal to my way of thinking, I've been a rat and I've lived parts my life outdoors more than under a roof.
You can not like his work, I don't like much of it myself but you can't dismiss his significance to this "scene" he didn't invent it but he did do things first, no Banksy didn't copy him but he did come after him and so in some way does owe him a debt.

BLEK ON D*FACE, by jon11 on Jun 6, 2008 17:42:14 GMT 1, to be honest off the street i really dont see ANY appeal to bleks work - it is so basic and almost meaningless - it's athena/ikea shat at best
respect for paving the way and inspiring many others but come on for fuck sake...
i'd rather my grandad had his cock out at the dinner table than this on my wall!
can we have some more alternative amusing titles and analogies for this one? Les Dennis bustin some cringe worthy moves at his daughters 16th springs to mind
