D*Face at the Black Rat Press gallery
Last Updated: 12:01am BST 07/10/2008
American pop star Christina Aguilera was among the buyers at a sell-out show for street artist D*Face which opened at the Black Rat Press gallery in east London last week.
The singer has collected works by the notorious graffiti artist Banksy, and her purchase will add weight to the belief that D*Face should be regarded in the same league. In the exhibition, entitled aPOPcalypse now, the artist re-works popular images from advertising and comic books to comment on the corruptive nature of fame, celebrity and consumerism.
One major difference between D*Face and Banksy is that the former's paintings, sculptures and installations are much cheaper, selling for between ยฃ5,500 and ยฃ25,000 each.
The other is that he has revealed his identity. As plain Dean Stockton, he will be able to speak publicly about his art, which he does most eloquently.
Asked whether this might open him to prosecution for his street graffiti, Black Rat Press director Mike Snelle says: "That's a risk he's willing to take."

You've obviously got your finger on the pulse. I'll send you that free promised print at the same time as I send Brad's out. Perhaps between the two of you you could put in a good word with Christine for me ;-)

D*FACE IN THE TELEGRAPH / AGUILERA , by Guy Denning on Oct 7, 2008 15:57:35 GMT 1, I like a lot of it. Haven't got any yet but hopefully one day will get dig something up. Could never afford anything except the unlimited BANKSY stickers until last year - but I'm trying to pace myself. DFACE is on the list but others have been on it longer!

D*FACE IN THE TELEGRAPH / AGUILERA , by bullet on Oct 7, 2008 17:52:59 GMT 1, still dont get how people can claim things without looking at the work done before it.
I could say that banksy has never done anything on the streets, but i would not as i would make sure i got my facts right first.
A lot of people are reading these articles and forming their own conclusions, go see the show - look up his work on the art archive sites. Then make a decision, rather than relying on other people to make your mind up.

Take a look at his website - www.DFace.co.uk Oh sorry, it was the prosecution bit I was referring to more. He may do street but tell me silky just how much of the tiny amount of the street work he does is actually illegal therefore leaving him open to prosecution? Its all an illusion just like Nick Walker. you are being force fed fake street art, neither really do street until they've got a show or new release happening and even then its legal.....and dare I say its a good example of the very consumerism that features in the work. pretty all the same
You have really gotta do your home work D*Face has been around doing stuff on the streets for years To talk about him like you have just makes it look like you know nothing about this scene

www.dface.co.uk/gallery
Loads of new stuff done this year, and I would say a good 90% is done illegal.

D*FACE IN THE TELEGRAPH / AGUILERA , by Daniel Silk on Oct 7, 2008 18:20:31 GMT 1, Oh come on JBOY, do you honestly believe that driving a lorry around london dropping these off where there are more CCTV cameras than most other cities on the planet was really illegal. Its all a game, an illusion, advanced advertising for the show. The currency is a pretty poor example of something that is clearly not illegal street work and how old is the one on the flyover? show me a recent piece painted illegally.
Why does it have to be illegal? Are you interested in the Art? or is it just knowing that its an illegal act give you the buzz

D*FACE IN THE TELEGRAPH / AGUILERA , by bullet on Oct 7, 2008 18:21:03 GMT 1, the ones in covent garden were not legal, i went down to look at them and the police were sniffing around.
just because it was a clever placement does not mean they were legal... You would have to get planning permission for all that and its not allowed in the city of london, dont know about ireland, thats a bit more slack.

D*FACE IN THE TELEGRAPH / AGUILERA , by bullet on Oct 7, 2008 18:23:35 GMT 1, give some examples of work you think is illegal then, it will not differ at all to anyone else.
if it was on the side of the white house or on the door of number 10 that would be impressive.
Fact of the matter is most of it is done on down and out buildings in cities as they are easy targets

D*FACE IN THE TELEGRAPH / AGUILERA , by guest2 on Oct 7, 2008 19:42:01 GMT 1, The concrete spray cans were def illegal and I think they were some of the best street art we've seen for a long while. DFace has gone to great lengths to pull this off and he personally oversaw the whole thing. As for Aguilera, I think she must have pretty decent taste as she was supposed to have bought the 'apocalypse now' piece which I thought was one of the best pieces of the show.
I certainly would have considered buying it given the chance.

D*FACE IN THE TELEGRAPH / AGUILERA , by Deleted on Oct 7, 2008 20:36:10 GMT 1, "the artist re-works popular images from advertising and comic books to comment on the corruptive nature of fame, celebrity and consumerism."
Although I like D*face and own more than a few of his 'Bits and Bobs', I find this statment quite hypocritical as his prices are now on a Sky high level. He seems to only hit the streets at times of self advertisment (Print release, show openings) and now he is selling to celebs, he NOW decides to tell every posh Newspaper and BBC News his real name.
'The corruptive nature of fame, celebrity and consumerism' has given D*Face one right up the f**kin arse and he loves it. ;D
