DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by giiiant on Oct 4, 2008 10:50:18 GMT 1, The whole "simple message, simple idea" thing can only be pulled off if the artist has the background to make it legitimate - D*face doesn't, he's an ex-packaging designer who saw that there might be a few quid to be made in the new "urban art" game and decided to put up a few stickers. Copying a comic book character line for line and adding some meaningless dialogue is just weak; give any guy a projector, tell him he'll make £20k at the end of it and they'll produce the same. His images are fun, sure, but if you want to pay £30k for fun buy a giant bouncy castle and put it in your garden - It'll be less embarrassing when people come over. The fact that he gave actually gave that Liberty print the go-ahead and was willing to sell it to his fans for £250 a piece says more than 20,000 little faces with wings ever could.
As I posted previously, there's also a certain irony in taking the piss out of capitalism only to sell it for double what most earn in a year. I'd like to see what kind of press the show would get if 80% of the board didn't have at least one piece by DFace (hell, even I do) and the gimmicky show layout was removed from the equation.

DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by Gentry on Oct 4, 2008 11:13:59 GMT 1, Judging him on his design background is a little harsh. He's there doing it now and making a living from his art, which is what most of us all dream of and if he jacked in his design job to make it happen then well done.
For me that's an impressive achievement that I wouldn't want to knock.

That was, hands down, the best piece in the show and it did indeed sell and it was NOT cheap. It was one of the higher end pieces. Simply stunning.

DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by Macdeee on Oct 4, 2008 13:09:41 GMT 1, Im sure that was £17k! Sold as well. If I had just bought 17k's worth of MDF I would not let anyone near it let alone a load of people p*ssed on free beer play with it.
it looked cool though.

DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by dslug on Oct 4, 2008 13:19:55 GMT 1, I have definitely gone from thinking this show looked shit to actually liking what D has produced.I only hope that the next year is not just this show with a twist every three months.

DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by Richard on Oct 4, 2008 14:12:29 GMT 1, I don't get the work at all. It just looks like he has pulled some pics out of a comic and is selling them as his own work to me.
There is no message or humor behind it...a bit boring really. I admit the show does seem well executed though.
The spinning round thing reminds me of a game I used to play when I was younger called Monster Mash.

DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by idris on Oct 4, 2008 18:13:50 GMT 1, lol - some woman was spinning it like it were a fairground toy lol - price tag was £17k i think - sold I daren't touch it !!
I thought the show was ace - as for the argument that its nothing more than reworked comic works - if it was that bad; 80%+ of the show was sold out !!! less than 5% of the prints are on ebay - there's always gonna be those who try making a quick buck. All in all, tremendous effort from D :-)

DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by Agent Provocateur on Oct 5, 2008 10:30:15 GMT 1, I think the prayer/hymn books were left lying 'round the chapel so the first people through the door would have grabbed them (can't be arsed checking back through the thread, buuut I seem to remember someone saying there were 6 of one and three of another... maybe totally wrong tho!).
I know there's a difference of opinion on the small 'American Depress' cards, but here's a pic of the two cards I asked for from behind the bar... with the superb addition of Mr D's signature which I just about had the courage to ask for when he was wondering round the gallery ;D
An exclusive little freeby (that won't cost a lot to get framed) is always a good way to remember a great show... well happy!
ps sorry for really bad mobile pic!

Writing a chapter now for a special book to celebrate 60 years of Thames and Hudson next year.
and another book is slowly underway - won't be out till 2010 though!

DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by snakes on Oct 5, 2008 16:11:49 GMT 1, went there today and I must admit that although I am not a comic book nut I was pleasantly surprised with the show.
Prices were very high but then again most were sold so obviously not too high.
Of the lot I would say that the friendly fire canvases were my favourite. The bronze coloured metal spray cans were nice but 2K was well out of my budget!

DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by atomone on Oct 5, 2008 16:28:02 GMT 1, I picked up two of those American Depress cards too from behind the bar, I gave one to my mate as they'd ran out...I too managed to ask D to sign my one, I asked if he was too famous to sign it now and he said yes (in jest) he then signed it and said don't flog it on ebay, he said he'd only signed a few so would know who's was on the bay! Happy to say mine is staying with me and will take pride in my collection (noticed one sold for just under £100 on ebay earlier!) guess i'm a bit gutted I didn't get two of them now to put front and back in a frame together! If anyone has a spare let me know...would happily exchange something?...one of those Banksy Radar Rat 12' sleeves by Dirty Funker springs to mind! they are still in the packaging they originally came in etc...unopened!
