Nick Walker V for Vandalism, by romanywg on Apr 10, 2008 0:29:28 GMT 1, Edition of 75 is by no means large. Hopefully, but we know that it won't, it might put off the flippers.

Nick Walker V for Vandalism, by Art-el on Apr 10, 2008 0:47:46 GMT 1, An 'art appreciation' question. We did one of these recently on an SPQR thread and, quel fu cki n suprise - art was discussed. Ya should have been there... Sooooo - who bought anything by Nick (OG or print) in the last, say 2 years? If you did - why? If ya didn't - why do you want it now? I didn't. Almost bought a headless astro 'bout a year ago and nearly bought vandals lots of times. Quite liked Nikers and had agreed a price for a Moona 12 months ago but didn't complete. Cos, whilst I quite liked it, I didn't love it and other pieces came first. Now, people are travelling from the four corners to queue for a print they haven't seen... Why???
Very good shout. Cash, Greed & fashion. As well of many many people that have only become aquainted with Nicks work of late

Nick Walker V for Vandalism, by quicksnap on Apr 10, 2008 0:56:48 GMT 1, at the blek le rat show in los angeles, they handed out stickers with numbers on the back so that people who wanted to buy a print had it secured for them. the way they let people in wasn't the best, but still.

Love my Hollywood print which is going up on my living room wall next to the window with a view of the Hollywood sign.

Fair comment Paul mate. The answer is simple mate, 'MONEY'
I am not going to enter the 'Flipper' debate on here again but the 75 prints on offer will probably only end up in the hands of 10 proper collectors on the night. The others will be in a Portfolio (of which I am guilty of keeping - not as I am a Flipper but an addict with limited wall space at present) or they will be on Ebay for ยฃ4k+ within hours of being bought. It's sad that other long term admirers of Nick's work like myself will more than likely not end up with a print which would be framed and appreciated for what it is and for the admiration of the Artist who created it!
End of the day I have been lucky enough to purchase a few pieces before the 'Bonhams' effect but I am the first to admit that I didn't like all of his work, the Moona Lisa was amusing but I didn't pull the trigger, I am not a huge fan of the Baby Moll work either. I like the Nikers and have an A/P, I also have an original Apish Angel that I bugged Harveyn for months to sell to me and he eventually caved in, I have all of the Morning After prints released so far and I recently purchased an original Morning After on metal directly from Nick.
The Morning After series is stunning, it is by far the easiest of Nick's work on the eye and appeals to all walks of life, this is what has made Nick such hot property at the moment. My Father and Mother are in their 60's, they would only see street art as ugly graffiti and although a Banksy image might cause a small smile they wouldn't hang it on their wall. Nick's Morning After, completeley different story! My Father is noe the proud owner of a Hollywood edition, framed and hung! My mother wants a copy but is happy to make do with Jef Aerosols 'Sitting Boy' ;D
Good thing's don't last, there are more people out there wanting the image, people who are willing to pay a premium to get it and so it fuel's the flippers business!
When I met Nick a couple of weeks ago, I told him that I was buth thrilled and gutted in relation to his recent success, thrilled that such a nice guy had received the recognition that I beleived his talent deserved and gutted that it now meant that my days of collecting his work were more than likely over! He is so passionate about his work, he was showing me photo's on his mobile of work's in progress, idea's that he had turned into an image, he couldn't keep the massive smile off his face as he explained the thought process behind them!
I thought that the London edition of MA with the Vandal's hat left on the wall kind of indicated the Vandal had jumped into the river and finished himself off! Nick enthusiastically told me the the Parliament buildings were the Vandals biggest job to date, and he had made a hasty retreat, after all it was easier in London for the Vandal to buy a new Bowler hat than to risk being caught trying to retrieve it!!
Good luck to the Guy!
I beleive the real test will come when the Vandal series comes to an end! They will always be collector's pieces and highly saught after but will they remain Nick's finest hour?
Thanks Pez for acknowledging me as a long term admirer of Nick's work, you aren't wrong!
Anyway, see you all at the show, hopefully put a few faces to names!?

I always thought that Headless Astro was a pile of shite as the only times I had seen it were on the computer screen. Bearing in mind I've only been into this scene for a short while I had never been to any shows or galleries and as such Nick's work did nothing for me. Towards the end of last year I went to the Ski and Snowboard show at Olympia. Tucked away in the corner were some artists showing off their skills (with paint not snow). I instantly recognised Headless Astro and was blown away. The colours and the detail was so vivid that it drew me into the picture and I've been after one ever since.
A similar thing happened when I attended the BRP print show in Feb and saw the Swoon stuff. Again to me it looks crap on a PC monitor but for me "Argentina" was the star of the show.
I guess my point is that until you actually see these pieces in the flesh, you might not actually like them and hence why so much stuff remains unsold - and Matt Small is clearly one of those.
So to anyone that hasn't been to a show or gallery - get out there and see these brilliant pieces of art in the flesh. Owning them isn't the be all and end all..although it certainly would be nice.

Nick Walker V for Vandalism, by spencerlee on Apr 10, 2008 10:18:08 GMT 1, Good post PUD, I think that Nick's work has actually improved over time, and in addition the Bonham's affect have combined to make him such hot property. I think you could be right about the ratio of soon to be released prints going to collectors and flippers. Flippers make a lot of money out of this scene, so it's in their interest to be at the front of every queue, whether it's virtual or real life.
Nice to see your MA piece again. Stunning. You might be priced out of his future work, but at least you have that.

Agreed! The 'Found' exhibition at TLSG was where I first saw the MA on metal, it along with Beejoir's Turin Scam were the pieces of the show for me, the Walker was sold on the night and I was gutted, the colors, the image, everything about it I loved. Pure luck that the 'buyer' never paid and I asked the right question at the right time!

Nick Walker V for Vandalism, by goffy on Apr 10, 2008 11:20:10 GMT 1, I also bought Nick before the rush, although I don't think I deserve brownie points because of it. And like most people I didn't like some of his work, although the coloured 'Mona Shot' is grossly underated in my opinion. I agree about TMA and Vandal series, and my favourite up to now is 'Hand with Blade, I love it. I hope I can get the 'Life's Too Short' print if I can afford it but I doubt it, never been able to get any print during a bun fight since Micallef's 'Save My Soul' last year. And if I can't buy something at cost I'm out. I refuse/can't afford to buy from flippers. I think the show will be great and will try and get down for it, off duty permitting.

Nick Walker V for Vandalism, by top on Apr 10, 2008 12:50:32 GMT 1, Excellent paulypaul!! Glad you said the above mate, bout f**king time someone did.. utmost respect for what you wrote..finally the truth from someone who cares!! ..bang on Nick Walker is not for me, just posting the newsletter I received for his 'true' fans here (see pezlow post back a page).. Doubt many will stand up and answer your post..just demonstrates your point further.adding my 2p to paulypauls ..s**t were gonna be rich! hahaha! ;D All you have demonstrated to me is an inability to read any of the posts after paulypauls and before yours. Several people have stood up to be counted. Why are you here except to put down an artist others appreciate? What is your point? I would not normally be argumentative about stuff like this but you got my goat!
Sorry if you misinterpreted a part of my post funyoung, it was purely to thank paulypaul for bringing up a perfectly good discussion point -which is to bring out people's opinions regarding Nick Walkers work etc- ..and express my distaste for those looking for a quick buck here or otherwise.. ok with you so far?
Yes, you are right 'several' people did stand up..to be honest though, since the post paulypaul made/mine a damn sight more people have given their views..not because they feel compelled to, just because they want to. Infact, I think it is fair to say that only a small minority may have misread my post.
Please could you explain what you meant by 'Why are you here except to put down an artist others appreciate?' Where does it say anything of the sort? ..dont think 'not for me' qualifies really.. haha! Also, I posted an email direct from BRP..do you know why? It was to inform and give clarity to forum members posting and give insight to the show..I'm so negative it hurts
It was never meant to call people's integrity out into the light, NW has a good following of fans as illustrated here. Also, he may bring out something I like myself in the future..which I will purchase if get the chance!! ..looks like I'll be in a long queue!
Hey, I just f**ked your goat.. ;D
Hope that clears up any issues you may have

Nick Walker V for Vandalism, by stender on Apr 10, 2008 13:05:26 GMT 1, I was planning to queue but the thought of people trying to queue jump has put me off. I wouldn't be able to stop myself lynching anyone who tried!
Fairest way to sell the prints is just give the day of release for the online prints rather than set a time.
And as for the 75 they should give out clues that take you round a trail of street art pieces to find a clue to take you to the next. Bit like a treasure hunt leading to a golden ticket to purchase a print.

Nick Walker V for Vandalism, by gtf on Apr 10, 2008 14:18:22 GMT 1, Another big fan of Nick's work here. I have quite a few prints and one original from the recent Carmichael show. For what it is worth all purchased before Bonhams.
Iโm coming down from Aberdeen for the show, which means missing 2 days work. Lost pay, travel, accommodation means it is costing me the guts of a grand to attend and that is before buying anything. Apart from Mr. B having a show (very, very unlikely) there is no other artist I would come down to London midweek for.
Iโll probably be travelling when the online prints are released, be too late getting there to be in the 1st 75 in the queue and originals are possibly out of my price range now. Despite this Iโm still coming down for the show. Enough said.

Nick Walker V for Vandalism, by sahoria on Apr 10, 2008 14:57:24 GMT 1, leaving from birmingham but not to sure what time i will be arriving... still searching for hotel with parking...want to drive down on the thursday and then stay the night... dont want to get there and then feel rushed to leave want to take time looking around and viewing the new work...
didnt have chance last time to look around neither so think will be able to make nice two days there looking at artwork and taking alot of pictures and footage. nice to meet people on the forums speak to aswell and think will be fantastic night...
i dont own original nick walker and dont have any of the TMA series neither... i got the mona simpson because i found it quirky and i liked... thanked nick for putting me in contact with the guys from vancouver for the snowboards too... mona shot i liked but couldnt see on my walls.... life is too short i can see on my walls and think alot of people will comment about that being one of the best prints they have seen.
started late to nick walker but appreciate his work for wht it is... headless astro is one of my fav but seeing life is too short has overtaken headless astro as my fav art work by nick walker... im just really hoping it is on a dark bacground rather than white... s
leaving from birmingham but not to sure what time i will be arriving... still searching for hotel with parking...want to drive down on the thursday and then stay the night... dont want to get there and then feel rushed to leave want to take time looking around and viewing the new work...

I like it - but I don't get it.
Butterfly - great Man in boat - great
The 2 together - will need to grow on me .......can somebody help me understand?

guy in the boat is going through a colorful journey... doesnt know what direction... the butterfly symbol of how short life can be so for me i like to think everyone is on a journey and it can end at any time.... even though we are so different from the butterfly lifes rules still apply regardless of what u are...might be wrong just how i interpret the art piece...s

Nick Walker V for Vandalism, by sahoria on Apr 10, 2008 15:40:35 GMT 1, In its metamorphosis from the common, colorless caterpillar to the exquisite winged creature of delicate beauty, the butterfly has become a metaphor for transformation and hope; across cultures, it has become a symbol for rebirth and resurrection, for the triumph of the spirit and the soul over the physical prison, the material world. Among the ancients, is an emblem of the soul and of unconscious attraction towards light. It is the soul as the opposite of the worm. In Western culture, the butterfly represents lightness and fickleness. Note Owen Warland's spiritual progression in Nathaniel Hawthorne's Artist of the Beautiful as it parallels the development of the butterfly which he struggles to mechanically recreate. In China, secondary meanings of joy and bliss. Is very closely related to love, especially with wings and when being burned in Cupid's hand that is not holding the bow. Wantonness, especially in Shakespeare. In Yeats, the opposite of the hawk, intuition as opposed to logic.

Nick Walker V for Vandalism, by melmoth on Apr 10, 2008 16:13:58 GMT 1, Anyone know what the print runs on the two online BRP prints are? Also, hopefully, they will be random drops, and with unusual naming conventions.
