Nick Walker show your verdict, by idris on Apr 20, 2008 12:13:28 GMT 1, The other comedy moment was - a young chap with a mouth the size of the mersey tunnel was speaking to Sohoria. He was saying what a huge fan of Nick Walker he was etc etc etc. This is in the very early hours of the morning, anyway their conversation was interrupted when this chap walks out from the gallery and in to the streets and past the queue. Our 'fan' of NW sees the chap and asks if he's had a good night (I think we all assumed he knew who he was talking to) anyway, he asks if he's had a good night & what have you been up to? NW replies 'oh you know, I do art', 'art? oh you do art? 'how long you been doing that then'?? came the reply to the complete bemusement of NW the look on NW face was 24 carat gold, anyway, to his credit NW just went merrily on his way & didn't come out with 'don't u know who i am' lol. Said hi couple of times and NW comes across as a very likeable chap - the 1st time he saw the queue he was in total shock. Must be awesome to think people queuing were there to appreciate their love of art and of NW's work. Still buzzing from - had an awesome awesome time :-) But, as someone pointed out the other day... he may be a huge fan of Nick's and not know what he looks like. How many artists on here would you recognise if they walked past you in the street?
BTW - MM - I forgot to add - this 'fan' was a ringer!!

Nick Walker show your verdict, by idris on Apr 20, 2008 12:16:02 GMT 1, ... and cheers Idris for keeping us updated on the queue and the show. In hindsight I made the wrong snap decision not to head down to the queue on Thursday morning but such is life. Went down on Friday afternoon when things had settled down a bit and spent an hour or so chatting to Mike, Jacqueline and Nick. Great show, lovely people and fully deserved. I look forward to seeing what the Vandal is up to in the next series...
I enjoyed keeping people updated - u'd have been 63rd in the queue at 4am Thursday Am and een had you walked in at 8.30 u'd have been 72nd. but at least yu had chance to see the show and meet Nick & every1 else.

Nick Walker show your verdict, by chablis on Apr 20, 2008 13:02:38 GMT 1, Spent 4hrs in the queue, at no 89 so no chance of a show print but I have to say that I really liked Nick's body of work. By the time I was in there were only a very few canvas's available. I choose not to try and buy one for the sake of it, rather I took my time to look around and enjoy the show.
I have to say that I really did like Nick's show and think that the pieces were well executed. Unfortunately I have missed the boat it terms of collecting his work, but I will keep an eye open as I certainly would like to.
Most detractors of Nicks work probably haven't had a chance to see it up close, I would recommend they get themselves down to the show and then make a decision.

Nick Walker show your verdict, by thekiller on Apr 20, 2008 14:07:33 GMT 1, I'm not being dismissive, just expressing my opinion, and having spoken to lots of other people, artists and collectors alike, I find it's an opinion i sharw with plenty of other people...... but fair shout, guys been in the game a while, works hard, I don't begrudge him his success, it's more I find it hard to understand those that buy into it. It feels as though people are buying it because it's there rather than judging it on it's own merits....and I feel that if it were judged on it's own merits it wouldn't stand up to much scrutiny.

Nick is good value if you look at Banksy prices.

Nick Walker show your verdict, by thinkbank on Apr 20, 2008 16:18:59 GMT 1, i think NW work is great, but he hasnt had the consistency of Banksy and thats where the diff is. Banksy has been knocking out good work for years, but I dont think the same thing can be said about Nick.
It will be interesting to see what he does when he puts the Vandal series to bed.

Nick Walker show your verdict, by Deleted on Apr 20, 2008 16:21:47 GMT 1, i have to agree that this guy who was talking to nick was just trying to big himself up earlier in the night saying how big a fan he was, he also said he was a good friend of nicks. so it was a classic moment when he didnt even recognise him. i didnt know what nick looked like this time last year and i went to an exhibition of his at the workshop in bristol, so i do understand the comments about fans of his work not def knowing what he looks like. this guy and several others with him were definatly paid to cue by one bloke and they were very clearly not into art at all and in fact they were really not very pleasant at all. im not going to go into details, but they were nasty.

Nick Walker show your verdict, by benya on Apr 20, 2008 16:35:00 GMT 1, The other comedy moment was - a young chap with a mouth the size of the mersey tunnel was speaking to Sohoria. How many artists on here would you recognise if they walked past you in the street?
most of them - besides Mr B of course.........

Nick Walker show your verdict, by gozgoz on Apr 20, 2008 17:13:24 GMT 1, is this a thread to show what we thought of the nick walker show?
i might get some serious negs here if the respect system was still around but i decided to go yesterday to avoid the queues and....
i dunno... if anything i was very disappointed and came out feeling very underwhelmed to be honest. i was seriously very disappointed... i brought a friend there and she was trying to get some inspiration for her Dissertation at RCA and she too came out feeling very empty and we left after about 15 mins.

If the system was still in place you'd be getting a + from me. No negs at all for forming your own opinion mate. I'm going to try and catch it when I'm down for Neate so I'll report back then ;D

Nick Walker show your verdict, by gozgoz on Apr 20, 2008 17:29:13 GMT 1, thanks mike... but yeah.. . i dunno... i mean i rememeber seeing the TMA London yonks ago with my now gf (i'll always like to think BRP and Nick Walker brought us togther...) and i was absolutely blown away. she immediately went to buy a print (back then, there wwere like 20 prints left and we could still consider...), and it was her first art purchase.
Anyways, i got one too. cos well, i thought it was brilliant.
And then i go to the show expecting the same feeling.
but i dunno. i was actually thinking of starting a separate thread on this but i fear (and i wish it aint so) that this genre has peaked? (for me at least) i really hope NW or Faile or Swoon will be able to do something again which captures my imaginaton.
but back to NW, i go in, and all i see are Vandals. and Vandals. and more pinstripey guys doing "haha, isnt this funny/cool!" stuff. so to be honest, i wasnt wowed anymore. i was bored. looking for one pictrue to the next, it didnt take a genius to figure out what the next picture would be.
My RCA dissertation friend, she didnt like any of it because it was too literal. she felt it didnt take a genius to figure it out. it was literally, what it was. it wasnt high art. didnt have any meaning. it just IS. She said that art is either good EXECUTION or good CONCEPT. and she felt this was neither. She was especially underwhelmed when i told her that the vandal was probably actually a real human model which NW took a photo of and later photoshopped and then cut a stencil from (i gather this from seeing romanyg's photos of NW's studio? i might be wrong).
So she was like... "i dont geddit. why's people seeing this as amazing. All you need is photoshop. a cutter. And patience. And the concept isnt very high brow too." So she was completely befuddled...
Anyways, I dont want to start a flame war or a imaginary negging system.
Thats my opinion and the second half is my tranlsating my friend's opinion.
the only thing i found vaguely interesting was the two collages behind. that was pretty well done i thought. but still... it doesnt capture me the way, the david choe exhibition did... or the very first time i saw TMA London...
that being said, i had friends who went who thought it was a smashing success.. and these dudes only went cos there was free beer! and they thought NW was amazing!

Nick Walker show your verdict, by gozgoz on Apr 20, 2008 17:35:51 GMT 1, but yeah... im looking at my faile now and my NW and i really do hope they dont flog a dead horse and carry on the same tired concepts...
i'll hate it if it ended up like the toy scene which i was very much into... i got bored cos well.. the artists kinda just got lazy i felt. they just ended up doing what they thought people liked. and in the end.... i got bored... i mean... how many more KAWS toys/clothes can one get excited about if its again, just cross eyes and cross bones. 8xx8 all over again...
how many more Futura pointmans can one keep getting excited over?
how many more popular figures of history do we need with a half decomposing face, wings, and a pink tongue?
so yeah. thats my two cents. i hope no one is incensed. cos it wasnt meant to be.
so my point and i guess this is a another thread altogether... is... i hope the next run of stuff from all these artists... i hoping really hard that that will dare to take a diffferent route. and dare to change. and hopefully blow me away...

However u guys go on about banksy like the sun shites out of his $hitter.
I loved Nicks work. And as far as affordable goes ... even I could afford one of Nicks canvas pieces .. albeit a smaller one. & talk about flogging a dead horse .... how many 'CCTV' pieces are we gonna see from 'Mr Invisible' aka Banksy??

Nick Walker show your verdict, by Deleted on Apr 20, 2008 18:06:57 GMT 1, Hey,
This is my first post so hello to all, thanks for all those who have posted in the past, coming on here has been a great source of info. I was in the queue for Nick Walker, no, 71, got there at 6:30am. Parked my arse on the pavement and began the wait. The queue was daunting, but i honestly met some great people, and on reflection, the time and the banter in the queue made the day even more enjoyable. Was it worth it, for my print yes. Life's 2 short is one of the best prints outside of Banksy i have seen in my opinion. Some of the other stuff was great too, I really liked Epiphany, a 1/1 for only ยฃ3000 which i thought was quite reasonable. All in all it was a good day.

Nick Walker show your verdict, by guest2 on Apr 20, 2008 18:10:17 GMT 1, Hey, This is my first post so hello to all, thanks for all those who have posted in the past, coming on here has been a great source of info.
Great uplifting positive 1st post. Epiphany was great, I liked the b/w's on paper too.

this is the emptiest, most cynical show i have ever seen. all about fleecing the gullible
