Nick Walker show your verdict, by carlito on Apr 20, 2008 18:50:39 GMT 1, My RCA dissertation friend, she didnt like any of it because it was too literal. she felt it didnt take a genius to figure it out. it was literally, what it was. it wasnt high art. didnt have any meaning. it just IS. She said that art is either good EXECUTION or good CONCEPT. and she felt this was neither. She was especially underwhelmed when i told her that the vandal was probably actually a real human model which NW took a photo of and later photoshopped and then cut a stencil from (i gather this from seeing romanyg's photos of NW's studio? i might be wrong). So she was like... "i dont geddit. why's people seeing this as amazing. All you need is photoshop. a cutter. And patience. And the concept isnt very high brow too." So she was completely befuddled...
an art student not 'getting' street art...well hey that's a plus in my book

Nick Walker show your verdict, by darjeeling on Apr 20, 2008 18:59:27 GMT 1, Obviously NW is the next messiah, the second coming of the almighty lord Banksy. Haile Walker! King of Kings, Lord of Lords and some to the Vicar or Christ!!!
But one question what the hell up is with "editioned" originals? I've never seen such abuse with the term original as I have seen wirh the street art scene. Eeelus, Banksy, Beejore, NW, so how many of each "unique canvas" were available? At the prices they were charging they should truly be "unique" and then some.
Honestly I can see the appeal of NW, some pretty pictures sometimes, but I can't see the long term in the work, total flavor of the month...

Editions on canvas...
They're a bit like editions on paper, but on canvas

Nick Walker show your verdict, by mred on Apr 20, 2008 19:03:59 GMT 1, Before I start I think I should come clean and let everyone know I have been a fan of Nick's work for a number of years, lucky enough to own a few pieces all got before the current frenzy, but sort of wanted to not like the show as I can no longer afford his work and am too old to queue outside for more than a few minutes, bones and bladder cannot take it any longer.
Was hoping to make opening more to have a few beers and hopefully have quick chat with Nick and J but work schedule scuppered that. Did however make show Friday morning, as I arrived with my girlfriend guy with rather large camera was leaving so for about 5 minutes we had gallery to our selves and then shared gallery with another couple. Was I blown away yes and no, there were some great pieces too many to mention by name even if I could remember them all but there were a few I felt had been knocked out, if you get my meaning but how many of us have been to a show with that number of works were that is not the case. Some pictures you needed to step back from to appreciate their full impact, dark vandal in rowing boat a good example.
Was it a great show? For me the answer was a definite yes, I walked away having added a good number of the pieces at the show to my fantasy art collection.
Can Nick do better I think so. I for one am pleased that Nick is getting the commercial success he deserves, I personally think Nick and the Vandal should do a "few" more show around the world so more people can see him in the flesh but then quickly slip back into the night.
Nick is a extremely creative and talented guy, just talk to him for a few minutes and you realize you are talking to someone special who is constantly coming up with ideas, so forget the one trick pony comments. I hope the commercial success of vandal will allow Nick to have time to develop some of those ideas in that famous black book and ones that have not even been thought of. I for one look forward to seeing where Nick goes next, I am sure he will not disappoint with his art although I think the days when I was lucky enough to be able to add to my collection have good.
Well done ApishAngel

Nick Walker show your verdict, by darjeeling on Apr 20, 2008 19:05:43 GMT 1, well duh, I know, I'm more asking why are they priced like they are unique works? Why are they worth tens of thousand more on canvas than on paper? Stencils and prints are not like painting where you truly need a surface that can handle the paint. These "editions" often look better on paper than canvas anyway. I could understand if they were getting all Warhol about it and actually combining painting with the printmaking. But seems to me like a ripoff.

Nick Walker show your verdict, by dh on Apr 20, 2008 20:39:44 GMT 1, I was close to the front of the que and there was still some nice pieces to buy, I wanted New York study 1 so went straight over to them but only Number 3 was left so I bought that as it was the cheapest item there at ยฃ1250 and there's no way I could afford a canvas.

Nick Walker show your verdict, by sahoria on Apr 21, 2008 15:16:03 GMT 1, The show was really one of the best shows that i have been to... i know alot of people go on about the level of detail not being so good but when i was there i was impressed... the amount of work on show really surprised me and in truth there was something for everyone... prices obviously was right as people brought the larger canvas so i am happy for nick about that...
i personally am so happy he is getting recognition... he hasnt just decided to do artwork he has been doing it for very long time and he doesnt have the attitude from speaking to him that he thinks i am better than everyone i deserve this and more... he is well grounded and appreciates the people that came and supported his work.
The print really impressed me... when i was in the queue was thinking right been outside at night in the cold and was just expecting it to not be that special if that makes sense? when i walked in i was so suprised.. it was more better than i thought it would be and just pitty i couldnt stay and look at the print for a bit longer...
the statue in the middle of the room i actually liked...thought was little risky having it in the middle but luckily no one knocked it over! the tma airways was very nice to see in person... i wasnt to sure about the image to be honest but when i actually seen in person you could see it up in your own home...
the tma tokyo was amazing also.. i am still looking at my footage looking at how much detail there was and in truth the colors for that specific art work was amazing... the buzz from the people inside was great also... it was almost like everyone forgot being out in the cold and just appreciated what they was there for...
the show for NW was great success and must have been nice for him to see his artwork sell at those prices also... people did buy the more expensive ones and in truth very rare you see those get sold again... mood boards agree looked outstanding also...
he came out and thanked people for being there and just as a person made me think here is a guy who produced his work and even after bonhams he still finds the time to speak to the people in the queue... very humble person in my opinion and im looking forward to seeing more new work over the coming year.
the show was called v for vandal so that was the theme of the show... when i left to travel down i knew what i was expecting to see so some comments about oh we seen all this before your right in saying that but for me i was pleased to see the work in person.
he has talent and has his fans and also his critics but at the end of the day he is going to carry on producing work and i am sure fans will always buy... over the year and next when tma toyko/sydney get released as a print so many people will be trying to get so i dont think his demand for his work is going to drop...
the actual show i enjoyed... was nice to look around and see artwork in person rather than seeing pictures because u do lose the detail of each art piece. i wish him all the best for the future..he has a family and if he can look after them and give them everything what i guess he never had than congrats to him....s

Nick Walker show your verdict, by Harveyn on Apr 23, 2008 17:42:31 GMT 1, Been away in San Francisco and missed the whole NW thing. I was sort of determined/hoping to come back and find that I hated the show and his latest body of work (my own personnel reasons).
But I have to say that I really love the majority of it, if not of all the work. In recent months I have found myself finding simple stencil work with great imagery really appealing and often quite powerful in terms of the presence it can command in the right place at the right time. A significant amount of my collection is more complex in its construction and darker in the emotion it evokes, but I have found recent purchases by the likes of Blek Le Rat equally captivating.
Darjeeling can I also comment on your question as it appears to have gone unanswered. Unless the canvases Nick has produced for this show are different from previous releases and I doubt this (ie screenprints and if they are then I agree with your comments) then the reason more value is associated with these as compared to the paper screenprints is that each is hand stenciled using spray paints by the artist (some manual application my also have been done). Therefore each canvas whilst part of an edition is different and a hand produced original piece by the Artist. They are not prints.
