Seeing as its two doors away from me, I will ;D(but would have anyway!)
I signed up ages ago to get invites to opening night, but havent seen anything thus far. But a postcard was dropped through all the doors in the surronding area, which counts as an invite.
I know gm and Martin want to go, so I will hopefully go with both of them (not seen ur pm yet Martin, should have read that first) but lets try and get a little collective group thang happening. ;D

it is :-) think the gallery borrowed it to show the link between Banksy and Blek. cough cough.. probably to make people think they were onto the next big thing ;-), a great marketing ploy, and fair enough I guess.

There were about 3 others in the whole room (not Banksy) an gm said they were the only ones that she liked in the whole place! Thought it was a good show myself, space did a lot for me the stolenspace gallery did as I thought that let it down really. Thankfully the quality of the work shone thru though! ;D
As far as needing to put a Banksy in the room to give a link to Banksy, are we sure it couldnt just be a "back door canvas" Banksy is famous for quoting Blek as being an originator - maybe just a gift from one artist to another? Or Blek bought it on Ebay recently? ?
Dont artists sometimes show off some of their own collection at the same time? Or am I just imaging that? I know they have complete shows (A la Monsieur Hirst....when is that actually happening? My memory vaguely remembers it's this month?)

That'd be thissun:
and thissun:
The only 2 pieces in there (including the happy choppers) that I'd actually want on my walls, to look at every day.
Don't suppose you remembered who the artist is, did you?

Thats quite alright ;D Good to meet you.
I thought all the work was good to look at, some certainly more, and looked at longer than others which were walked straight past - mostly for me just a bit too clean though. But they could transfer all the pieces direct to the wall (as they did with a few of them) or even sprayed direct onto some of them?? (as they repaint that bloody gallery every week anyway, and its only had a couple of different shows in their in the past 6 months!) and leave the figure hungry posh toffs to buy an "unseen canvas" after the show wraps up, as quite clearly they would pay the figure next to it no matter what it really looked like.
It had free vodka cocktails and beers, who can complain at that in the heart of Shoeditch!? Its top knob central round these parts don't you know. Local newsletter even used to be called "The Shoreditch t**t" in a nod to them all!!

I said there was a painting of Basquiat in there too, but I didn't see any by Basquiat.
I think the artist might have begun with a H.
Those 2 definitely were, cos I specially looked so that I'd remember
I'm not too taken with the Blek stuff. I liked the self-portrait, with the big bags of stencils, but wasn't too keen on the rest.

Looks like Peter Howson, Scottish artist. Agree on the Blek.. don't really like his style of cutting, it's nice and freehand and a lot better than the photoshopped stuff I see.. but still, seems very flat and 2 dimensional.

blek le rat, by mido on Oct 15, 2006 23:50:27 GMT 1, wasn't it matthew small?
no disrepect (that seems to be my fave phrase at the moment) but I really didn't see the point of having other artists at Blek's show. I mean it's only a small gallery anyway - can't be that hard to fill it for a 'retrospective of 30 years of a man's life'.
it was merely a clever, but blatant, attempt to get extra interest in a young artist's work, and extra interest in blek's work via a very famous artist's work...
I like a decent percentage of blek's stuff, and really gald he's getting a bit of recognition, but it has been hyped up too much, and it's all a bit desparate...

Just looked him up and they don't really look like any of his stuff, although I do remember a few of his pieces in there as well.
They don't really look like anything I can find by Peter Howson either.
If only I knew someone who worked really close to the gallery and might be able to pop in easily to find out...

YES !.. I agree 100%, think people have been a bit suckered into this one through the 'Banksy' quote. A bit disturbed that it was an exhibition driven by the ebay groups 'want' list. A quite cynical marketing ploy, does nothing for the integrity of the artist or the artists work when he can knock up an exhibition in a couple of months on the back of a dealer knowing ebay could generate coommissions. Money that goes to the artist is a byproduct. If this work was meant to be, don't you think it would have happened at somepoint in the past 25 years. Quite sad it happened this way, it should have been a major retrospective organised properly. Not a commission based commercial show driven by ebay. There's even talk of the the ebay group chosing the next print ! ha ha ha.. so we don't get the best or the most suited to the times, but the one collectors want. Now that is tragic. Ok, so the artist gets paid, but... without the dealers commission this work wouldn't see the light of day..never has street work looked more out of place on canvas or print and had less artistic integrity..... And some of the composition ?... yikes.

blek le rat, by ratpack on Oct 16, 2006 10:06:47 GMT 1, The banksy canvas was on loan from a passer-by.
they were passing and saw them putting the Blek show up and said that they had something that might go with the show. They bought it for ยฃ10,000 a year ago and I got the impression that they wanted to sell it so they put it in the show.
isn't that last one a happy chopper? There were about 3 others in the whole room (not Banksy) an gm said they were the only ones that she liked in the whole place! Thought it was a good show myself, space did a lot for me the stolenspace gallery did as I thought that let it down really. Thankfully the quality of the work shone thru though! ;D As far as needing to put a Banksy in the room to give a link to Banksy, are we sure it couldnt just be a "back door canvas" Banksy is famous for quoting Blek as being an originator - maybe just a gift from one artist to another? Or Blek bought it on Ebay recently? ? Dont artists sometimes show off some of their own collection at the same time? Or am I just imaging that? I know they have complete shows (A la Monsieur Hirst....when is that actually happening? My memory vaguely remembers it's this month?)
