Executive Garry Cook has reaffirmed the Clubโs stance over last nightโs decision to walk away from any deal involving AC Milan midfielder Kaka.
Speaking this morning at the City of Manchester Stadium, Cook told us: โItโs a mixture of disappointment and some frustration too.
โI think the intention from AC Milan was clearly to sell their player and Manchester Cityโs intention was clearly to bring him to the football club.
โI think there was some political pressure and definitely media space that they engaged in. To be honest, I think they bottled it, simple as that.โ
โThey live in a different space than we do as a football club and itโs been interesting to watch their behaviour.โ
Despite numerous media reports in Italy and throughout the country, Garry continued to set the record straight: โWe never met the player, we only met the representatives, we never actually made him an offer on personal terms.
โSo itโs very difficult to turn down something that youโve not been offered.
โWeโve heard everything and thereโs been a bit of mudslinging, but weโre going to choose not to get into that, our objective is that weโre building a football club for the long term.
โIt would have been great to have had Kaka at this football club, the Premier League would have benefitted, football would have benefitted and we were willing to make that investment on rational terms. Unfortunately, the behaviour that they showed was not what we had expected nor had we anticipated.โ
Cook also cleared up reports surrounding the visit to Milan. He confirmed: โWeโve been to Milan four times and the delegation yesterday involved three lawyers that represent the legal counsel for Manchester City football club.
โIt also involved a board member who had flown half way around the world from Abu Dhabi, myself and one other senior executive.
โWe were confined to a room, with no food or drink, and we asked some questions of the football club and more importantly we asked some questions of the representatives of the player and they simple could not answer the questions.
โWhat they wanted to talk about was; โhow much are you going to pay him?โWe chose not to get into that and we didnโt make an offer to the player.
โIs he a great footballer? Yes. Does he represent all the values you would want to have as an ambassador of the sport global and were we looking for the opportunity to joint venture in areas that would take this club on to a different platform? Yes, but unfortunately the landscape changed and his representatives wanted to talk about how much we were going to pay him.
โMoney was certainly the motive yesterday.โ

Or maybe he should have said - Kaka chose not to come, regardless of the obscene amount of money we were willing to pay him, as he didn't believe our ambition would be a reality. No probably not, he's playing the media game which you would hope that your chief exec would do in this situation.

That's what each of the last 6 clubs who've signed him have thought.
Time's he's managed it?
Er,
Zero.
Time's he's assaulted team mates & generally proved to be a pernicious influence in the dressing room?
Er,
Six.

he better hurry up as he's nearing the end of a glittering career.
edit: 14 million quid. that's the best bit of business west ham has done in years. we can buy someone useful with that. or pay a couple of months interest on the money our icelandic owners owe.

I hear you, he is a total Muppet, but he did well with Hughes at Blackburn and Wales, so who knows, i think he scored around 17 goals at Blackburn.i wish Liverpool would have sold him for that last year.

Milan bottled it!, by Dellboyy on Jan 20, 2009 15:53:46 GMT 1, My prediction... as soon as city aren't instantly challenging for a euro place (or he's on the bench more than twice) he'll be quitting again for someone like spurs, if of course they'll have him!
With players like him, i've always thought the negative impact on the dressing room would outweigh anything positive he might provide on the pitch!
