I like to ride my bicycle, by streetgirl on Jun 16, 2008 12:40:14 GMT 1, Okay, so calling on random forum knowledge here. Looking into purchasing myself a new push bike and seems they've come on somewhat since the days of choppers and raleighs.
So just looking for some advice really. What I know I'm looking for is a hybrid bike, decent gear system and brakes and I want it light.
Unfortunately shops/websites/catalogues don't tend to list weights anywhere.

Its all about what money you are willing to shell out for one really..
plus, do you want it to be able to slap off rocks etc

I like to ride my bicycle, by Jonny Wednesday on Jun 16, 2008 12:53:53 GMT 1, I'd go for a Trek or a Claud Butler. Got one of each for me and the missus. Both hybrid, aluminium framed. They are both lighter than my 6 yr olds (steel) mountain bike. Both have shimano gears. As for brakes - they're pretty good too - gears and brakes are very easy to use and smooooth!
Price wise, think they were both about 230 quid. Which is probably (at a guess) 100 quid more than a steel frame bike - but well worth it. I wont go back to a steel frame now.

I like to ride my bicycle, by streetgirl on Jun 16, 2008 13:03:25 GMT 1, Looking at spending between ยฃ250-ยฃ400
Claud Butler have so far been on my target list, the urban 300. Something about them being so old school I think.
The more bike shops I go to - the more brands - the more confusion and then my brain freezes.
sacked - can you hook me up with fat bottomed girls?
dmandpenfold - hoping having a bike as a primary vehicle will go someway in curbing my spending spree. And no, no basket, no panier. I'm going for the 'knows what she's talking about look' for this bike.
And yeah, what top said!

See to an average bike user 'Hybrid' would define, what you suggested. This guy i know uncovers his latest purchase with the words 'check out my bike porn' followed by unusual grunts and groans. And to him and other bike nuts (clever) Hybrid would describe many types of bikes.
So....... 80% road? 20% off road?
Claude Butler would get my vote for build quality, i had a hand built limited edition stolen from the garage while we were all home

I like to ride my bicycle, by streetgirl on Jun 16, 2008 13:12:37 GMT 1, Well I've spent a total of over 10 minutes in THREE bike shops over the weekend and the guy serving me (his name was er, Warrior) kept referring to it as a hybrid. So that's what I'm going with as it makes me feel in the know.
Giant - silver - bike - nicely narrowed down. Thanks dm!
And CG - there is no limit to the weird shit you know and the weirder people you mix with.
Claud Butler then! But first to check out these cannondales, though they seem a little pro for me.

I like to ride my bicycle, by skylarkin on Jun 16, 2008 13:25:57 GMT 1, Looking at spending between ยฃ250-ยฃ400 L O, Things to look for as said, aluminum frame, lighter the better. For your budget your going to be looking for a good frame, not so fussed about additionals. (gearing, forks, chainset ect) GT - keep an eye on them, one of the best Mountain bike makers in the business - www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=86693 comes in at ยฃ299 really nice frame. Gearing and the like a bit ordinary. But for an additional ยฃ100-150 you can upgrade. Check out this one www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=86847, never heard of Pinnical but good frame and nice spec gearing. Deore is your baby, goes deore, deoreLX, deore XT and then theres one other anything DeoreLX and above is sweet. Worth a look. Good list here - www.evanscycles.com/dept.jsp?dept_id=1110Reason I am quoting evens is cos I bought my bike there and was impressed with there stock. I went for a model that was 2 years old and got a bargain. If you can have a look at the govs cycle to work scheme. You could save up to 50% of your bike if you can get your company/employer to buy it for you. Breast of duck cheese then

Looked at the latest news and there is a bike that looks like an electric pylon...then saw that it was a mere ยฃ5600!! If I had that kinda cash for a bike, I would be looking for a hand made Orange...Scweeeeet!!
