No Beckham in the England squad, by spencerlee on Jan 31, 2008 13:24:17 GMT 1, Has this been announced? I thought it was today at 3.30. I am in two minds about it. On the one hand Capello should be trusted to pick the very best team he can, however, it's a friendly, and it would be a gesture to get some England fans on his side before he starts properly....

No time for gestures or sentiment... great decision... and that's from someone who isn't an England fan... the England fans should be delighted with the decision

No Beckham in the England squad, by bert on Jan 31, 2008 13:38:37 GMT 1, Yes, he is a shadow of the player he was, but I think Beckham's quality will be sorely missed by England. The cross for Crouch's goal in the Croatia match was just sublime.
I agree with Capello's decision though, he can't be properly match fit so fair enough leaving him out this time. Beckham will take it on the chin and will probably work even harder to get back into the squad.

Mancunian
"Stand up if you hate Man U" The booing of United players The treatment of Beckham after the '98 World Cup The treatment of Phil Neville after Euro 2000 The countless United players injured on England duty The Ing-ur-land fans/thugs The reputation of Ing-ur-land fans/thugs causing issues with club travel policing
I could go on...
No thanks, I'd rather United won the League Cup than England the World Cup
Club will always come before country for me United > England

Please do go on I was enjoying that.
I'm sure you'll get slaughtered for your reasons but I thought a very large number of Northerner's held the England national team/fa etc with this contempt for some of the reasons above (only some) The rest are specificly United fuelled
Its a disgrace that Wembley was rebuilt in London and not in The Midlands/NEC.etc
The pro's and con's fell so far in favour of Birmingham, that it was obvious what the muppets at the FA would choose.
For the record I am an England fan
AND
I think it's another disgrace that Beckham even got close to 99, his last nine (if not more) appearances his ONLY motivation was the big 1 zero zero. Should have gone like a man when he lost the armband.
Fair play to Capello, stamps his mark immeadiately that there will be no place sentiment to create a winning formula, when it comes to decisions that need balls

No Beckham in the England squad, by Poppy Sunshine on Jan 31, 2008 14:36:17 GMT 1, I thought it was a good idea when Mclaren kicked him out of the team to make way for the next world cup preparations and give some of the players who might be young enough to make another 4 years a chance. However, it soon became obvious there was a massive gap he had left. Yes, he might be too old now to be planning a team around him for the next world cup but despite that he is the only consistent player who ever plays his best and always earns his keep. If he's half the man he used to be then he's still twice the man of any other player and stands out a mile above them. They should have amde a film about him like the one about Zidane so you can see what he does for the whole match and his effort off the ball. They all get paid a fortune and keep apologising after all the crap results and you don't know from one game to the next who will put in a decent performance other than Beckham. I reckon the only reason he's out of the friendly is because he's got nothing to prove and he's the only one Capello definitely wants in the proper games, he's just trying to make his mind up on the rest of the useless underachieving tossers. But I'm only a girl.

The first four reasons just make me think "awww... diddums" the one about United players getting injured just sounds completely ridiculous, they're not the only ones who get injured but then if United's players didn't seem to have a God-given right to play for England regardless of how utterly average they are (see Messrs Neville and Neville) then you wouldn't have the problem of so many players getting injured. Thugs etc etc fine, but hardly a valid reason for turning your back on your national side, if everyone did that, then England's fanbase would naturally comprise entirely of thugs.
I thought you were FCUM then United?
The United are hard-done-by thing is a pretty tired argument though...

Typical ManUre attitude!
I used to live in Manchester and me and my mates nearly got into a fight coming home on the Magic Bus with a bunch of ManUre fans who started chanting Argentina.

No Beckham in the England squad, by manchestermike on Jan 31, 2008 14:46:06 GMT 1, FCUM and MUFC - 2 Uniteds one soul...
There is nothing, and I mean nothing that makes me want to support the English national football team. Rugby, cricket definitely, and other sports... but football? No chance, United (both of them) are my team, not England. Why should someone support a team they have absolutely no affinity for just because they were born there?
The injuries... Coppell's career ending, Robson's many injuries... England didn't pay their wages. In the same way as they don't play Rooney's, Hargreaves' or the wobbly gobbed tosser's wages now... would I be happy if they got injured playing for England? I'd be fuming.
As for the Neville comment... Gary Neville has been the best right back in England over the last 10 years... only the most blind can't see that.
As for Beckham, the over rated t**t should take his slut wife and fuck off back to America for good.

I know about all this republic of Mancunia gubbins... but really.. you'd rather Man U win the league cup than England win the world cup? You are joking surely?
I thought you were an FC United man now anyway? There's not much chance of them getting injured on England duty.
Anyway, the booing of Beckham & Neville had nothing to do with them being Man u players. And for a while I imagine Man U were booed as they were the embodyment of all that was going wrong with football (which is also why you stopped supporting them if I recall?) Now of course every other premier league team is as rotten to the core so i'd be surprised if the booing still goes on...?

No Beckham in the England squad, by manchestermike on Jan 31, 2008 14:59:04 GMT 1, Mancunian "Stand up if you hate Man U" The booing of United players The treatment of Beckham after the '98 World Cup The treatment of Phil Neville after Euro 2000 The countless United players injured on England duty The Ing-ur-land fans/thugs The reputation of Ing-ur-land fans/thugs causing issues with club travel policing I could go on... No thanks, I'd rather United won the League Cup than England the World Cup Club will always come before country for me United > England I know about all this republic of Mancunia gubbins... but really.. you'd rather Man U win the league cup than England win the world cup? You are joking surely? I thought you were an FC United man now anyway? There's not much chance of them getting injured on England duty. Anyway, the booing of Beckham & Neville had nothing to do with them being Man u players. And for a while I imagine Man U were booed as they were the embodyment of all that was going wrong with football (which is also why you stopped supporting them if I recall?) Now of course every other premier league team is as rotten to the core so i'd be surprised if the booing still goes on...?
I still love Manchester United, I just won't financially support them... where will I be next Wednesday? On the forecourt at Old Trafford singing the Flowers of Manchester and remembering those who died 50 years ago. Then that evening I'll be at Gigg Lane watching FC United, where of course there will be a minutes silence for our players that died at Munich.
Note I said our players... that's because it's our history. It is as much the history of FC United as Manchester United... two United's one soul
And yes, I would rather United won the League Cup than England the World Cup... United are my team... not England

No Beckham in the England squad, by manchestermike on Jan 31, 2008 15:00:45 GMT 1, So, tell me then WHY I should support England? I prefer the Ronaldo song to 'Argentina' anyway Because you're English and a football fan - duh!
Does that mean I should support Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea or whoever in Europe? No chance, they're not my team, England aren't my team... why support a team I have absolutely no positive feelings for?

England isn't a team though - it's a country. YOUR country!!

No Beckham in the England squad, by manchestermike on Jan 31, 2008 15:04:37 GMT 1, "like a true disciple of Pete Boyle" What? The guy who doesn't go to FC United? The guy who sang 'not for sale' and marched with the banners then when the club was sold immediately went back? No, I sang not for sale with the rest of them... and I meant it PLC = always for sale. its what manyoo wanted, its what they got. dont see many complaining now.
What we wanted? Did we hell... People aren't complaining now as United are playing the best they have done for years... people are fickle like that... they see the short term success as the be all and end all... they will sacrifice the long term for the short term... as a City fan I know said today
"You should see them at City. Willing to accept someone with a decidedly dodgy past just because, and only because, he has a lot of money. Never mind the allegations. Never mind the fact that the club is now a political tool. Never mind it is a vehicle for the promotional of one man and his interests and drive to be seen as legitimate in the face of some dodgy allegations. Whether these allegations are true or not (and no-one is 100% sure) the fact is that most people don't care because they are purely interested in glory and short term bragging."

No Beckham in the England squad, by robinbanks on Jan 31, 2008 15:16:46 GMT 1, Well I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince another self-important Manchester United PLC fan otherwise.
By the way - this is the Banksy and Urban Art board - WTF has Beckham, England and an American soccer team got to do with that?
