No Beckham in the England squad, by nickyjgordon on Jan 31, 2008 15:18:20 GMT 1, PLC = always for sale. its what manyoo wanted, its what they got. dont see many complaining now. What we wanted? Did we hell... People aren't complaining now as United are playing the best they have done for years... people are fickle like that... they see the short term success as the be all and end all... they will sacrifice the long term for the short term... as a City fan I know said today "You should see them at City. Willing to accept someone with a decidedly dodgy past just because, and only because, he has a lot of money. Never mind the allegations. Never mind the fact that the club is now a political tool. Never mind it is a vehicle for the promotional of one man and his interests and drive to be seen as legitimate in the face of some dodgy allegations. Whether these allegations are true or not (and no-one is 100% sure) the fact is that most people don't care because they are purely interested in glory and short term bragging."
Manchester United PLC = for sale to anyone who wants to buy them

No Beckham in the England squad, by manchestermike on Jan 31, 2008 15:21:31 GMT 1, Well I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince another self-important Manchester United PLC fan otherwise. By the way - this is the Banksy and Urban Art board - WFT has Beckham, England and an American soccer team got to do with that?
Manchester United PLC fan... American soccer team... the originality kills me
It's probably got the same amount to do with this board as Jeremy Beadle, music, computing or Heath fucking Ledger have... but it still gets posted here...
Out of interest - who (apart from England ) do you support

There's 42 points up for grabs - I can't see us getting any more than about 20 or so now - that will leave us on just less than 50 points which is usually enough to finish about 11th or 12th.

No Beckham in the England squad, by robinbanks on Jan 31, 2008 15:33:53 GMT 1, ps - I fully expect us to get beaten off your lot when we meet again.
Hopefully things will be slightly different next season - but we've been saying that since dear old Bobby Robson was sacked.

Looking through your matches I made it a fair few less than that, but I suppose it's personal view...
I took 22/1 on you to go down when Keegan was appointed, so should be able to trade after your next 5 at about 8/1 - 10/1... Middlesbrough (h), Villa (a), United (h), Blackburn (h) and Liverpool (a) coming up for you.
What do you think of the Wise appointment too? It seems a little odd to me, I don't think Keegan is too happy with it by all accounts either... what do you think he'll (Keegan, not Wise) be like if you say, pick up only 1 or 2 points from the next 5 games? Do you think he'll want out?

No Beckham in the England squad, by robinbanks on Jan 31, 2008 15:44:51 GMT 1, Wise took everyone by surprise I think - possibly KK as well - although he says he knew about it and approved it (he would though wouldn't he).
That said it looks as though our new owner and chairman are putting a good team of footballing people in place (mainly the Real madrid scout who has just joined us) and although it doesn't get reported, we have signed a few promising young players from around the world in the last few months - so things look good for the future.
I'm not totally convinced by KK's appointment but I am willing to give it a go. I don't think he'll be jumping ship - not this season anyway.
I am expecting us to beat boro on sunday so hopefully we will have already surpassed that theoretical total of yours. As for the other games - who knows - but I'd love it, just love it if we beat you. ;D
And I'd be a lot more worried about the threat of relegation if it weren't for the fact that there are a lot of really poor teams propping up the league right now.

Kind of my thoughts on the relegation issue... Derby, Fulham and (fingers crossed) Bolton down for me... I don't think you'll go down, but your odds are sure to fall after the next few games, so a perfect trade will be available. 'Boro's form has been improving as of late and I think they play you a the wrong time, which is why I thought/think draw.
No chance of you beating United though... I wish I was going as I've never seen United lose at St James' , but I think the team will cope without me... The time before last when I went I nearly got thrown out of the exec boxes for taking the piss... had to go and sit up in the gods next time... ;D

As the squad hasn't been named yet what do you think of Anton Ferdinand's chances of getting in it?
Under previous England bosses Spurs and West Ham players only usually need 3 good games or so to ensure their place

i'd rather see upson, green, cole, ashton, noble in before ferdinand, i'm not saying they should be in, but all deserve consideration before ferdinand.

No Beckham in the England squad, by ryskip on Jan 31, 2008 20:27:42 GMT 1, Beckham is not in the squad because he isn't playing football, it's a no brainer. Capello or no-one else for that matter should pick a player that isn't playing competitive games for whatever reason.
This does not mean to say Beckham will not win his 100th cap, remember it was Capello who sold Becks to LA Galaxy and then swallowed his pride to pick him again for Madrid and Beckham then went on to be a major factor in Madrid winning the league.
As for deciding whether or not you support your national team that's just crazy!! Born in Bristol, raised south of the river makes me a Bristol City fan, being English makes me an England fan at football, rugby, cricket even tiddly-winks!!

I don't know his odds, but I'm starting to think he could be in for a big payday???
Newcastle's next 5 league games are Middlesbrough, Aston Villa,Man Utd,Blackburn and Liverpool.
dodgy chairman + dodgy manager + dodgy defense + not scoring goals = BIG TROUBLE FOR NEWCASTLE ME THINKS.....

No Beckham in the England squad, by rolyateel on Jan 31, 2008 23:04:12 GMT 1, How can you not be an England fan? You're English aren't you? Mancunian "Stand up if you hate Man U" The booing of United players The treatment of Beckham after the '98 World Cup The treatment of Phil Neville after Euro 2000 The countless United players injured on England duty The Ing-ur-land fans/thugs The reputation of Ing-ur-land fans/thugs causing issues with club travel policing I could go on... No thanks, I'd rather United won the League Cup than England the World Cup Club will always come before country for me United > England
Part of me would love England to win the World Cup...but being an Arsenal fan I'd choose club over country EVERY time (I'll await the jokes about the lack of England players in our squad at present) Change the names around slightly in your list and I'm 100% with you...not just England, but international football full stop FIFA are trying to ruin / hamper / handicap club football because it's so much more enjoyable than the international games. ..and don't get me started on "friendlies"...complete distraction / interruption to the league I think you also need to add to the list all the "England" players who play with far more passion for their club than they do for their country (Lampard / Terry...and no thats not an anti Chelsea bias)...because thats where the money is. Overpaid bunch of fuckwits.
The best thing Capello could do would be to drop the vast majority of the previous squad & bring in some youngsters for whom it might actually mean something....oh, and find a decent goalkeeper..fuck knows where from though...maybe he could get Almunia to apply for citizenship.

I'm not English but I have to agree with that sentiment as far as Lampard and co. are concerned. Really felt for England fans in the last while they way those and other players went about their job during the qualifiers, if they did that at club level they'd really have felt it from the stands and it just smacked of pure arrogance and laziness. They also talk in the press as if they're automatic picks for the squad (when they're trying to get fit for the next England game, even though no squad's been named). With England not involved at the next EC Capello should use the opportunity to blood lads who want it more and who still want it more at their clubs. Joe Hart's your man in nets btw. ;D

No Beckham in the England squad, by ryskip on Feb 1, 2008 10:21:10 GMT 1, Sounds like capitalism trying to take over football to me.
International Football is great because it unites people, you have Man U fans sitting next to Wycombe fans all hoping for that one same thing.
I don’t believe FIFA are trying to ruin the domestic game but I do believe that certain clubs have too much power, regardless of who owns the players contract, any player should be honoured to play for their Country and any Club should be honoured their players are being picked to play for their Country!!
It’s not as if Clubs lose these players for domestic games, unlike Rugby or Cricket we have an International Break enforced by FIFA, which means Domestic fixtures are postponed for International games.
I personally get annoyed when we have certain managers complaining about pointless International friendly’s yet it’s these same managers who are happy to fly their team of to Dubai or America because Nike/Adidas want to Capitalise on the global market.
Say what you like about Beckham but how many blokes nearing retirement would train throughout his entire time off in order to be in with a chance of playing for his Country?! If you want passion the he has it in abundance.

Your mate obviously has more money than sense if he's willing to spunk a grand on that when there are at least 5 teams who will finish below us - guaranteed!

Doesn't make it great, it's bollocks plain and simple. I for one am delighted England haven't made the Euros this year, no more pubs taken over with wanker muppets who know fuck all about football apart from what they see once every two years...
I don’t believe FIFA are trying to ruin the domestic game but I do believe that certain clubs have too much power, regardless of who owns the players contract, any player should be honoured to play for their Country and any Club should be honoured their players are being picked to play for their Country!!
Once the country starts paying the players wages and any compensation for injuries etc incurred while playing for the country then fine. But until then clubs should have the choice if their players play or not
It’s not as if Clubs lose these players for domestic games, unlike Rugby or Cricket we have an International Break enforced by FIFA, which means Domestic fixtures are postponed for International games.
What about the ones who come back injured then?
I personally get annoyed when we have certain managers complaining about pointless International friendly’s yet it’s these same managers who are happy to fly their team of to Dubai or America because Nike/Adidas want to Capitalise on the global market.
Their team, their rules... Look at the recent United trip, a short break for the players in the sun, a training match and they come back refreshed.
Say what you like about Beckham but how many blokes nearing retirement would train throughout his entire time off in order to be in with a chance of playing for his Country?! If you want passion the he has it in abundance.
Passion is all well and good, but if you can't cut it you shouldn't be picked. The bloke chose living next to the Cruises instead of international football. Well done Capello for making the stand and not picking him

No Beckham in the England squad, by manchestermike on Feb 1, 2008 12:32:29 GMT 1, Bit off the subject, a friend at work has put a £1000 on Newcastle to go down this season!!! I'm down to the bookies tomorrow ................. What's dodgy about Chris Mort? And Keegan is anything but dodgy - he might be slightly fragile but he's not Arry "wheeler dealer" Redknapp. Your mate obviously has more money than sense if he's willing to spunk a grand on that when there are at least 5 teams who will finish below us - guaranteed!
Don't go to the bookies, back it on betfair now, lay it back in 5 games for either a profit either way or at least your stake back

Unless we beat boro, draw with villa, lose to man u and then beat blackburn.
Surely the odds will just get longer then and you will have lost money?
Betting is no way to make money (unless you're a bookie). Better off saving your money for a flight to Bethlehem next Xmas, buying a shiny sheet of gold paper with a picture on it and selling it a month later on here for 20x what you paid for it.
joke ;D

No Beckham in the England squad, by bert on Feb 1, 2008 13:40:57 GMT 1, I'd chose club over country everytime too, but that doesn't mean I'm not an England fan. I like how international football offers lower league fans the chance to attend packed stadia and to see players of great quality, how it unites fans from different clubs and causes so much discussion, how each international team has it's own personality and flavours, how the World Cup pisses all over any club tournament from a great height etc. etc.
For me, these days international tournaments offer football in a much more pure form than the top level, money saturated bore-fest of the Premiership procession (it's not even a competition in the strictest sense of the word, bar billionaire oligarchs coming in with new takeovers, no one will ever be able to challenge the big 4 over a season).
Regarding the arguement over clubs releasing players and the potential damage that can occur, I'm sure it increases players values huge amounts by having them play in international games too (e.g. how many Prem scouts are over at the African Cup of Nations?), which is of obvious benefit to the club teams. If I remember correctly, the FA also paid Owen's wages during his last prolonged injury when out on England duty.

No Beckham in the England squad, by ryskip on Feb 1, 2008 15:47:15 GMT 1, MM if you’re concerned about wanker muppets taking over your pub because there’s an England match on then don’t go there, go to Tesco’s and do your weekly shopping as it’ll be empty.
The clubs who buy these players for Millions and Millions are fully aware they have international commitments. Michael Owen has had his fair share of injuries whilst playing for England and Newcastle have been compensated as a result.
If I wanted a short break in the sun I’d go to Spain not Saudi Arabia to play in Sami Al Jaber's testimonial game, that's a lot of travelling for 4 days. Say what you want but Ferguson would have never dreamed of doing that 10 years ago, the money men are taking over.
Finally it was Beckham’s decision to move to LA there’s no denying that but not at the expense of playing for England, this has been proven when McLaren swallowed his pride and picked him after making his big stance by dropping him in the first place.
As for his quality, do you think any other player on the pitch that night could have played the ball to Crouch for his goal?
