What's your best gig to SHOUT about?, by carlito on Sept 5, 2007 10:42:32 GMT 1, on a rock tip..i took a girl on a date to see Bon Jovi when I was 16, at Wembley Arena think it was...and at one point Jon said ' do you believe a man can fly' and preceeded to whizz around on a wire...never have i willed a man to die as much as I willed him to that night...worst (gig related) night of my life realised I wasn't into this s**te and never saw the girl again

What's your best gig to SHOUT about?, by mcnuts on Sept 5, 2007 11:16:01 GMT 1, I'm tempted to say Nirvana in 1993 with the Boredoms and the Meat Puppets, But in 1994 saw Nine Inch Nails, with Soundgarden, Marilyn Manson and Pop Will Eat Itself. Of course, some of the lollapaloozas of the 1990s were good too...

They've been doing selective gigs/festivals in the states but have said in Kerrang mag that they've no desire to play in the UK at the mo.

Ive only seen them the once, at leeds festival in about 2001, never been so disapointed with a band live, graunted they split up about 2 weeks later, so that might have had something to do with it.
best gig for me would be. No Doubt, hollywood bowl, 2004, was a secret gig, our lass is a massive fan of theirs. We were in long beach getting some dinner and some dude came over to my g/f and asked if we had managed to get tickets for tonight (she was wearing a no doubt tshirt or something) we were like for what, he said apparently they are playing tonight, but no one knows where. So went to an internet cafe, turns out the tickets were going on sale at tower records at 1400hrs. the internet cafe owner saw we were printing of directions on how to get to tower records, asked us about it, he was also a massive no doubt fan, so shut the shop, and gave us and about 5 of his mates a lift to tower records on the flat bed part of his truck to get tickets. Got to the show and found out we were sat next to green day
If not that then Donington 95, the whole day bar warrior soul, couldnt think of a better line up

What's your best gig to SHOUT about?, by scavos on Sept 7, 2007 22:25:36 GMT 1, Didn't Rage Against the Machine stand naked on stage in protest about something once? Now that takes some gonads!
In early 2005 I was pleased to see the Arctic Monkeys in the Harley Hotel, Sheffield in front of about 100 just on the cusp of their 1st single, Five Minutes With... You could really sense it was going to kick off for them. I remember crowds of people outside squeezed right up to the glass windows at the side of the stage.
In a bizarre twist I was giving blood about two weeks later in another great Sheffield venue, The Octagon and the assistant sorting me out was Alex Turner's (Arctic Monkeys lead singer's) nana. As you can imagine, we had a lot to talk about as the colour drained from my cheeks! ;D ;D

I think I'd feel the same about Showaddywaddy.
BTW I used to think Shakin Stevens and Mike Baldwin were the same person. Bit random i know but there you go.

What's your best gig to SHOUT about?, by AJ on Sept 11, 2007 20:46:40 GMT 1, Some crackers here folks. Yeah it was Captain America supporting on that tour - they became Eugenius cos Marvel were threatening to sue! Another of mine was seeing Radiohead support the Frank and Walters in Edwards, Birmingham in 1992. Must have been 150-200 in there. I s**t you not. They f**king rocked. Thom with his wild yellow hair. They were so intense and sounded proper full on. The Franks were all the rage then and I still love their stuff. All wearing their same orange long-sleeve t-shirts and and leggings. We are, we are, we are, we are, we are the Frank and Wallllllters!!! ;D ;D Also saw Oasis in Edwards in April 1994 and propped up the bar next to Liam who was wearing a big red jacket. I tried to be cool and just did the 'nod' to him. He probably just scowled at me and sipped his lager! Again about 200 in there. I think their first single Supersonic had just been released? They were brilliant and 'I am the Walrus was like nothing else....god what a night! As Jim Kerr said at Milton Keynes Bowl - 22-06-1986 when Maradonna's hand of God put us out the world cup - "Music's better than football!".
SCARY!! Are you me in a parallel universe??!! The first gig I ever went to was Simple Minds at MK Bowl AND I saw Radiohead support the Frank and Walters at the After Dark club in Reading AND saw Oasis at the Old Trout in Windsor when Supersonic was just released.

What's your best gig to SHOUT about?, by goffy on Sept 12, 2007 0:11:02 GMT 1, I have been to so many great gigs over the years but some stand out more than others. I saw Elvis Costello on the Blood and Chocolate tour in which he played two nights at the Royal Court in Liverpool. The first night it was just Elvis and the Attractions promoting the album. On the second night it started off with Elvis playing Accoustic guitar inbeteen showing his holiday slides and being very funny. The second half of the show had Drew Schofield (Scully) as MC, Elvis and the Attractions with a spinning wheel containing different song titles and a Go-Go Box. Drew Schofield picked people out of the crowd who got to spin the wheel, and what ever song it landed on the band would play. You then had to go into the Go-Go Box and dance to the song! The even had an Elvis Presley section on the wheel and when it fell on it you had to shout which Elvis song you wanted to hear and they would play. They played Marie's the Name of His Latest Flame. Fooking Brilliant!

That was me coach. I suspect that I was at that gig as well as I saw Martin and the Daintees about 3 or 4 times at gigs in Manchester.
Martin is still gigging as well and playing acoustic sets. I went to see him last December at the Half Moon in Putney. "Rain" still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
He's now a talented artist as well and sells some of his originals at his gigs.

What's your best gig to SHOUT about?, by paulypaul on Sept 12, 2007 14:34:04 GMT 1, Saw Nirvana play that tour in Bradford i think. Shonen Knife and Captain America supporting. Maybe it was toward the end of the tour and they were knackered, cos they didnt exactly rock the place. Sonic Youth In Leeds on the Goo tour however, was amazing. Gutted to have missed out on the gigs they played recently in London playing Daydream Nation.Anyone go? I feel old now!
I was at that gig - they were shit. Went with a kid called Kiss Army and Bradford Andy. D'ya know 'em?
Hole at the Duchess were great (same year-ish) and the Orb at Leeds uni. Me and three mates did a load of acid and it was, well, life alteringly beautiful. Did the same thing a few years later when watching them at glastonbury, laughed a lot and came round in an empty field with my back to an empty stage...
Was at a Moby after party once and remember standing there smoking a fat cigar, wearing a leather jacket and snakeskin shoes and telling him 'you were alright, but you're not quite Motorhead, are you?' whilst taking a piss next to him.
Taxi...

What's your best gig to SHOUT about?, by biggayal on Sept 12, 2007 14:57:10 GMT 1, As most of these gig's mentioned are a little before my time (unfortunatley in some cases!), I'll have to go with something that I've seen from 1998 onwards. One of the gig's that stands out the most for me was when I saw Oasis in Finsbury Park in 2003 I think... Being a big fan of them seeing them live for the first time probably had something to do with this, but the fact that The Charlatans supported them and were even better than Oasis really sticks in my mind! That and being hit on the head with a flying bottle sticks in the memory the most ;D After that, seeing The Libertines at Brixton was a quality gig.... And Roni Size in Hammersmith - seeing that live was very impressive - the drummer was one of the best I've seen live ;D

Was everyone at that Orb gig screwed? I was there as well. My mate spent the entire night tripping with his face on the back wall of the venue. He only realised it was over when the bouncers told him to leave.
RIP the Duchess indeed! A great place.

What's your best gig to SHOUT about?, by teatwosugars on Sept 14, 2007 13:40:53 GMT 1, I love my funk, soul, breaks etc. but my main love has got to be hip hop (hey- it's what got me in to this graf and street art lark years ago!!). Therefore the two best gigs for me have got to be seeing two of the greatest pioneers of the genre-
1) RUN DMC- Saw them at the first ever Creamfields (when it was down south!). It was May 2nd '97- I know because it just happened to be on my 21st birthday- what a way to celebrate! ;D They were absolutely superb- true masters of what they did.
2) Grandmaster Flash- Again a birthday gig a few years ago. One of my idols, he did a proper block party set at the Jazz Cafe. We had a table on the balcony (having a sit down meal was the only way we could get tickets!), which gave us a great view of everything he did. As a bonus we were right near the stairs which lead off the stage and I had a quick chat to him as he walked up after his set.
Other memorable events include Reading '94 (Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, Chilli Peppers etc), James Brown at Essential Festival, Public Enemy at Homelands, numerous Jamiroquai gigs (only the first 3 albums though!!! ), and have been lucky enough to see George Clinton a couple of times (man I fuckin love the P-Funk)!!!
Great thread scavos. I loved hearing everyone's different musical preferences and memories

a day I will never forget was the gig Rancid played at the lowlands festival. The energy was amazing, big circle pit and all..they played far too long and were kicked of the stage... a year later I saw Lars Frederiksen with The Bastards, also an amazing show. Got stuck on a station because I missed my train.. had a cold night (-5) but met the guys later in a bar..
Since I started to play guitar myself I also started to listen to blues.. and now I'm hooked.. Some must sees: Hokie Joint (Band from London, these guys will make it!), Joe Bonamassa (best guitarist in the world at the moment). And I saw Eric Burdon not so long ago in the dutch music temple Paradiso. Amazing show, never seen old people making such great music.. He played with what is left of The Animals and it's great to see the pioneers of popmusic live.
Alex Turner (frontman of Acrtic Monkeys) is great too.. one of the few that is around now and will be for the upcoming years.. amazing how music-smart he is.

Ha The brain does play tricks when you reach a certain age, I was there too, Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, Iggy, Beastie Boys, Silverfish all on the same stage and Leatherface, Midway Still, and Babes in Toyland in the tent.
