Breakthrough Albums of 2008, by streetgirl on Dec 9, 2008 2:00:07 GMT 1, Well...it's been a long time since I posted, and after wading through the pages of controversy (or not) on the main threads, I naturally gravitated back to the lesser inhabited but far more worthy threads...
As 2008 draws to a close I got to thinking on a recent road trip about the albums I've enjoyed this year.
There are three albums that have shaped my year and they are:
1) Cyndi Lauper - Bring ya to the brink 2) Sia - Some people have real problems 3) Grace Jones - Hurricane
All were complete surprises, especially Cyndi's - which is an absolute class production. Seriously recommend.
So aside from the albums we expected to be great from already established/commercial artists - who broke through for you this year?
(Can you tell I'm looking for recommendations outside of the charts and popular consensus?)

Breakthrough Albums of 2008, by Prescription Art on Dec 9, 2008 4:15:57 GMT 1, Hi Streetgirl... not seen you here for a while!
Seems strange to describe Grace Jones, Cyndi Lauper & Sia as 'breakthrough albums'. They've been around a while!
Be sure to check out the recent Aeroplane remix of Grace Jones. It's awesome.
hypem.com/search/grace%20jones%20aeroplane/1/
My favourites this year have probably been Late of the Pier, Vampire Weekend & Friendly Fires. Pilooski's 'Dirty Edits Vol. 2' has been on my stereo a hell of a lot as well.

Breakthrough Albums of 2008, by hick on Dec 9, 2008 9:39:16 GMT 1, a breakthrough album is so called because it pushes an inknown band into the mainstream OR it is a freshly signed band that smashes through delivering a end of year winner.
none of those apply to you list (sorry for being an ass)
for a breakthrough try... fleet foxes bon iver metronomy ladyhawke plus loads more.
BUT enjoy your records especially if they mean something to you on a personal level.

...I'll get my coat!
On a more serious but still slightly mainstream note - I really like The Ting Tings.

Ting tings good, as was MGMT's new album. However much to my shame my musical knowledge has been the weakest it's been in years, kind of fell out of love with music somewhat. I'm now on a mission to use local library to go back in time to discover loads of old bits that I was always curious about. Think I'll start with the Blues and work from there.

Robert Johnson is a good blues artist.

Hey ass / hick!
No problem, I get where you and Prescription Art (good to see you mate) are coming from BUT...I actually thought I'd made a decent enough differentiation in saying breakthrough album not artist. There's a big difference as far as I'm concerned - established artists can have breakthrough albums.
It's almost because all three are established artists that I find these three new releases more of a breakthrough - a complete side step away from anything I expected either of them to release at this stage in their careers. Especially Cyndi - MikeeP I was as shocked as you seem to be to hear that not only had she released a new album, but it's actually really fucking good.
Other than that - some decent shouts - a couple of which I don't have so thank you. Anyone got anything less obvious - or anything that hasn't charted anywhere on radio 1 or on later?

Breakthrough Albums of 2008, by Prescription Art on Dec 9, 2008 15:09:47 GMT 1, Hick, i downloaded Bon Iver yesterday after it came #1 in both your end of year lists & the Observer's... the first track is great but I start to lose interest about half way through.
I'd also debate whether Metronomy's album was a 'breakthrough' as you've described it, as their first is better (and more successful?). If you're going to get pedantic then I will too!
And for anyone talking up the Ting Tings... admittedly Great DJ & That's Not My Name were superb singles - but the rest of the album is appalling, and they're utterly dismal live!

Also a bit more commercially, really liked The Last Shadow Puppets & Glasvegas albums!

Breakthrough Albums of 2008, by streetgirl on Dec 15, 2008 12:09:57 GMT 1, Hey hero,
You're the first person I've heard that's got the album....have only read very mixed reviews. But from the general sounds of things, he's experimenting but not in an indulgent way....does that sound about right?
My brain's too frozen from weekend activities to think of an example, but there's nothing worse than an established popular artist believing their own hype and that anything they put their name to will sell. Only to find it's a load of tripe.
