Woolworths and now Zavvi Closure?, by Daniel Silk on Dec 11, 2008 16:34:29 GMT 1, I pop into Woolworths at least once a week, and had my eye on a DVD about three weeks back that was £12.97 bit steep I was thinking, but then a few weeks later it went up to £19.97 and guess what now its £19.97 with 10% off ;D ;D ;D
Dont you just love sales like that ;D

Woolworths and now Zavvi Closure?, by pauljunk on Dec 11, 2008 16:57:55 GMT 1, liquidating 101. The liquidators come in and actually mark up stuff and stick a x% off sign next to it because they know people are idiots and whenever they see a sale they assume they are receiving a better price.
A place close by my work is going out of business and I laughed as I watched people run in there and grabbed marked up merch for 10% off when on any other day of the week when the store was still in business they could have gone in with readily available 20% coupons and bought the exact same items for cheaper.

Surely most people aren't that stupid though? I had a nosey when they opened their 50% sale the other week, and walked straight out again when i noticed all cd's, dvd's & games were still more expensive than play with their 10% discount!

Woolworths and now Zavvi Closure?, by Daniel Silk on Dec 11, 2008 17:37:34 GMT 1, From the January Sales last year it looks like shops take the the quality stuff off the shelves, and replay it with junk that they can make more money on even when they appear to be at big discounts. You can go round posh department stores, and they are selling stuff that would look more at home on a 50p stall at a car boot sale ;D very sad to see quality big name stores going down that road

Woolworths and now Zavvi Closure?, by veralynn on Dec 11, 2008 19:54:10 GMT 1, Wholly disagree with the point of this thread, Woolies have lost their way (and they did some years ago) and they didn't have someone like Stuart Rose or Phillip Green at the helm to steer them through the choppy waters.
Due to lack of identity, bad management and having their core business stripped away by the internet there might be 30,000 hard working people out of a job by Christmas, if you laugh at that or poke fun at that then quite frankly you need to take a very long hard look at yourself.
So sixftjellybaby, time to wise up and grow up, its pretty tough out there for British retail.

Woolworths and now Zavvi Closure?, by Daniel Silk on Dec 11, 2008 20:02:54 GMT 1, I think Woolworths is a massive loss for the UK So many small towns rely on them as the big name in the high street to draw in trade for everyone else. With them gone, it could be the death of many small high streets
Plus the number of youngsters that start out with jobs at Woolworths The knock on effect of this is massive!
I just hope the supermarkets do step in and buy up most of the stores and keep them open in some shape or form.
Fingers crossed for everyone employed at Woolworths.

Woolworths and now Zavvi Closure?, by bradpitt on Dec 11, 2008 20:10:22 GMT 1, Woolworths isn't high street?! they are one of the companies that have wiped out the true high street over the years, trading at silly prices and closing down many businesses on the way. Dixons group are next to go. It's a good thing for smaller independent retailers.

I think WHSmiths days must be numbered Im in a small town and they are always by far the most expensive for DVD's and CD's and with Waterstones and the internet taking the Book sales, all they have left is magazines and newspapers If I was them I would scale down now before its too late.

Rover, rolls Royce, Bentley, mfi all” have lost their way” and it’s a sad time for British retail but its called irony (and that is very British) sorry!!!!

Absolutely disagree, Woolworths are the high street in generic terms who stood toe to toe with independant retailers, look out of our window and see what your high street looks like now?
If you are looking for the person who killed the high st then look no further than Tesco's. they set up out of town superstores working on ultra skinny margins then when they kill independant stores they set up 'Tesco's express' (Sainsbury's local, call it what you want) charging 10/15% more per item than in the superstores down the road.
How any more Costa Coffee or Pizza Express can your high street stand?
Independant retail on every high street in the country is on its knees and I do know what I'm talking about. B2B sales will remain and internet based business will survive but there will be a lot of blood on the streets over the next 6 months - got a flash BMW dealership down the road from you? In six months it wont be there.......cos they're not selling any cars........no irony here just cold stark facts, the futures not so bright so there's no need to wear shades.

Woolworths and now Zavvi Closure?, by bullet on Dec 12, 2008 1:24:47 GMT 1, apart from british nostalgia purposes, woolworths are rubbish. The online shopping and digital music downloads era killed them years ago and they never recovered.
Although back in the day i did used to work in woolworths and it was one of the crappest places to work. It was overpriced and nothing was ever in stock
