Woolworths and now Zavvi Closure?, by dmandpenfold on Dec 12, 2008 13:13:48 GMT 1, Woolwoth's is just a glorified Poundland, the writing unfortunately was always on the wall they failed to move with the times.
What really pissed me off though was the scenes on the news last night of gadgy brummies complaining that the discounts were rubbish and it was a con, not a thought about the thousands of poor turkeys who have lost their jobs and might not be able to afford turkey this crimbo, just shows how much people give a toss about others, it's all about self and it seems to have got worse under 'new' labour (or did i imagine that).
As far as Dixons go, bradpitt's right i too think they will be next, they are hopeless as a group particularly PCWorld, i've never met a bigger bunch of incompetents in my life, ever dealt with the PCWorld business PC's dept? utterly useless and the techguys dont know their arse from their elbow.
In times like these it is always about survival of the fittest and unfortunately Woolies, MFI etc were on the brink anyway, shops that sell tat are a dime a dozen, there's no profit in competing in the budget end unless your overheads are way down low. It's all about competition and the stores that offer goods at reasonable prices and stick to what they know and do it well will survive, stores that sell a diverse range of cheap products, like some weird old town emporium are going to die.

Woolworths and now Zavvi Closure?, by Winter on Dec 24, 2008 21:27:23 GMT 1, I heard that Virgin Megastore changed to Zavvi as it was in trouble. Branson doesn't want to have the Virgin brand damaged so it was changed to Zavvi. The fact that Virgin Radio recently became Absolute radio would suggest a similar move to protect the Virgin brand. Just what I heard.

Woolworths and now Zavvi Closure?, by veralynn on Dec 24, 2008 22:06:43 GMT 1, just an idea?? that is hilarious well done
grantb - you're 20 or so (in summers) and I believe you to be an Essex dweller, somewhere near sunny Southend?
A colleague of mine's wife has just lost her job with Woollies and I'm curious as to whether you'd like to meet him and discuss exactly how hilarious this image is? He's local to you. Thought not.
What people tend to forget that when we read 2,500 people, or 25,000 people then it's just a number but the impact for those people is very real.
Zavvi was a mgnt buyout for just ยฃ1 (I recall) but on the whole 'Virgin' is just a brand, they don't actually do anything, everyone knows them for the airline business but in terms of the amount of planes they fly they are a drop in the ocean when compared to Easyjet.
Zavvi was brought to its knees by a combination of supplier failure and lack of brand identity.
Rumour has it that the next High St casualties might be Next and WH Smith (WH Smith 'bought in' footfall by locating post offices in its branches but it hasn't worked)....

Woolworths and now Zavvi Closure?, by veralynn on Dec 24, 2008 22:09:06 GMT 1, And when you buy someone for ยฃ1 then you are also purchasing their liabilities along with their goodwill, Zavvi's goodwill was bugger all, as they didn't have a 'brand'.
